Lets say Morabito has an excellent draft camp and proves too good a proposition to turn down so Melbourne end up taking him alongside T.Scully with one of their top 2 picks, and Richmond take either Trengove/Butcher.
That leaves us with a interesting situation
Will we be satisfied to take the remaining non-WA player Butcher/Trengove?
or
Go West Australian once more and spring another surprise in the form of Kane Lucas,Aaron Black(stocks are rising) or Lewis Jetta(ends up having a stellar finals campaign)

I ask this question in the light of the 2008 draft events
it seems like the WA formula could be proving to work, but is it something we would stick to with our 1st round pick? very interested:)

Trengove > Lucas. I'd take him.

At the moment I see it going like this:

1. Scully
2. Trengove
3. Morabito
4. Butcher/Lucas/Another mid

1. Scully
2. Butcher
3. Morabito
4. Trengove

1. Scully
2. Butcher
3. Trengove
4. Morabito (I prefer Lucas)

I like Trengove.
Butcher, I dunno, only saw the carnival where he was average to say the least.
If you watch St Kilda, Western Bulldogs, Geelong, Collingwood, they each have 6-8 guns who run through the middle without there being a drop in talent.

At the moment we have Schammer (trier but average by foot), Hase (near the end), Suban ( could be one of the answers), Mundy (if the moon is passing through the cusp of Saturn he plays well), Palmer (returning from a knee recon) Pav (who will be back to being a forward soon), Deboer, Crowley (two taggers).

We're still very, very light on for QUALITY mifielders IMO.
So, assuming we can spring a 2nd round pick for Tarrant/Drum I'd love to see us do something like this.

Morabito/Trengove/Lucas
1st 2nd round pick 20 - Lewis Jetta, Travis Colyer, Mark Hutchings/ Brad Shepherd (maybe a bit early)
2nd 2nd round - One of the others from that list or some of the Vic mids.

3rd round and beyond talls.

Hill and Ibbotson are 2 of our 3 best young mids, you seem to have forgotten both of them

True to a degree, but I'm thinking more of center square specialists and to be fair Ibbotson played more off half back and is too in and out of a game for my liking

Look at Geelong: Ablett, Bartel. Ling, Corey surrounded by guys like Chapman, Corey Enright, who although they play HF/HB respectively, push through the midfield

If Scully, Trengove, Morabito are gone before our pick I think anything could happen. After Jetta's performance last week and if he tears it up today and maybe next week it would be hard to pass him up at 4. But, I know nothing of the others except for those I have seen at WAFL level so really I know not much.;)

From what I have seen I reckon Trengove could be the best player available so if he is there at 4 take him. Butcher I am not sure on but I think has been injured most of year and still been fairly impressive and we do desperately need a young key forward. There should be a fair bit of upside to him because he has been injured and has a fair bit of filling out to do.
Morabito has plenty of X Factor and upside would be happy with him
I am not sold on Lucas, he looks a WCE type in my book
Hope we just take the best available (and that we get it right).
Pick 4 this year could be the most important pick we have ever had and if we get it wrong could haunt us for years

You can't limit yourself to WA born players, especially in the first round.

Our whole draft will likely be decided on who is left at our first pick. And I really can't see why we would take anyone other than Morabito or Butcher to be honest (assuming Scully and Trengove are both taken as expected).

Morabito (mid)
Black/Panos (tall)
Bartlett/Colyer (mid)

Morabito (mid)
Jetta/Christensen/Duncan/Sheppard (mid)
Houghton/Luff/Fyfe/Donaldson (tall)

Butcher (tall)
Jetta/Christensen/Duncan/Sheppard (mid)
Bartlett/Colyer (mid)

Personally I like option #1, although #2 and #3 both look good too. Getting either Black or Panos with our second rounder would be a huge steal, although I do think there is a genuine possibility of it happening. Getting another first rounder, or upgrading our second round would make it a lot easier though...

Whatever happens, a mix of 2 mids and 1 tall should be the aim with our first 3 picks.

On a side note, our second rounder would be too early for Colyer. While it would be far too early for Hutchings in my opinion. Winmar could be a good option, but he will take a lot of development, which is something that some posters don't seem to appreciate (see Hinkley). And Troy Taylor will be a big steal for whatever class takes him, and I really hope it's us (get on the bandwagon).

Our second pick would be a mistake too. We need some inside midfielders and key position players.

Agree with the gist of this if not entirely with the detail. Midfielders are still the priority and KPP from the third round on.

In the Hun today Hutchy reckons Melb are leaning towards drafting best players rather than needz, and on that basis are favoring Scully & Trengrove...

Which leaves us Morabito or Butcher, whoever is left. Best available regardless of position at pick 4.
Maybe we can scam a late 1st rounder for Tarrant/Peake combo, would be nice.

As I mentioned elsewhere I would be stunned if Mora was still available at 4. The next best mids are supposed to be Martin, Steven, Lucas, Tapscott or Cunnington. Take your pick although the local lad Lucas should get the gig.
Then they would hope that Black is still there at 20 which could be doubtful. Other KPP who could be available at 20 are Griffiths, Fitzpatrick, Panos or Carlisle. Whether they are worth a 20 pick is another matter.

Otherwise we could go for a KPP like Butcher/Black at 4 and take the best available mid at 20. Then we go for KPPs and a developing ruckman.

Unlike a lot of BF pundits I reckon our current midfield prospocts are good. They just need time to develop. We are seriousy short of young quality talls.

I'd say Melb almost definitely will take Scully and Trengove.

Richmond will have a tough call between Mora and Butcher. The fact they have taken Riewoldt and Vickery early in past drafts may sway them towards the midfielder in Mora. Also Butcher's ability to get his body and mind mean he is somewhat of a risk to a club desperate just to make draft picks stick at this stage. For mine they will go Morabito.

Leaving Freo with an interesting pick. Would be hard to overlook Butcher given you are not loaded up on (young) key forwards.

It's always been a bit of a gamble recruiting teenagers from interstate ion the draft. Some stay on like Pav, some want to go back home as soon as their contract is up.

i also reckon that Richmond will target morabito. the only thing that could hold them back is the fact that he is injured at the moment and may not be able to do a lot of the physical tests at the draft camp meaning they will not be able to see his pace or vertical leap which may get him to slip through to our pick

Considering WA won the u/18 champs pretty easily I'd be very surprised if Freo didn't go local if Morabito was gone by pick 4.......though I don't reckon Freo will do another 'out of the box' selection like Hill again......especially since GC17 will have all the prize picks next year to snaffle up the likes of Swallow, Darling and Matera......

Perhaps Freo may use Sandi as bait for getting those fella's at next year's draft?.....

sandi as bait? Sandilands and Pavlich are NEVER going to be put up for sale.

Thats right. Sandi and Pavlich will rise to even greater heights when we have a strong midfield around them. This coming trade week and drafts is set to be one of the most crucial in Freos history imo.

Never say never! Perhaps in 5 years time if Darling and Swallow are destroying Freo in GC17's jumpers we might say 'if only'.....any way I can't see Pav rising any further than he is now.....and don't forget this strong midfield you talk about is still realistically 3 years away in terms of matches played, physical prowess etc.....it's only been in the last 3 years, Geelong have come to the party having the likes of Bartel, Corey and Ablett come in to their own. All 3 are mid to late twenties with 100 - 150 games of AFL footy in their bodies......fella's like Sandi and Pav will be pushing 30 and beyond waiting on the likes of Palmer, Ibbotsen, De Boer etc etc getting to that level......not saying they won't, just saying perhaps the timing for Darling and Swallow may coincide better than for Pav or Sandi.

Aint gonna happen I know but like I say never say never!
