Hey all,

Just wondering who has or who knows about iinet and their speeds. I've been with them for years and I am on the 8mbps connection (I know you will hardly if ever connect at that) but I am connecting at roughly 1.2mbps all the time. Directly connecting through a router and I would say I wouldn't be too far from the exchange. Youtube videos say for example that are roughly 3 minutes long take like 5 or so minutes to load which i find extremely slow, downloading through e.g torrents I get roughly 20-50kb average which seems quite slow as well. Question is - Do you think I may have a damaged line?

I am not super technical with computers so forgive me. At the back where you plug the phone line in near the computer, it is pretty damaged as its been there for a while. When I say phone line I mean the socket from the wall, and when I say damaged i mean its like hanging out by the wires kinda thing, I think a wire or two may or may not be damaged. I thought this would probably make the connection worse but wouldn't it simply not work at all? Anyway that probably isn't the problem but throughout the years I have had many issues with random drop outs ectera you know the works, I have had Telstra come out quite a while back and the other times the line just stablized I think.

So in conclusion to my long essay type thing I just wrote, could a problem with my line result in slower speeds because it seems like it is extremely slow.

I've had ADSL2+ with iiNet for a few weeks now and the speeds have been fantastic.

I recommend starting a thread here, as there are dozens of iiNet staff who are willing to help find and solve issues.

That sounds terrible and is only going at ADSL speeds.

I just changed to TPG's 80GB for $50 plan on ADSL2+ and while I'm a bit further from the transfer than I would've liked my speeds are still very good are rarely dip below about 5mbp/s IF THAT.

Depends when the off peak / on peak times are for TPG. I thought they were something like 30/60 which isn't very helpful. I know iiNet's times are between 2am and 12pm, so thats not too bad for off peak.

I've heard (and read on TPG's forums) of some fairly slow connections. However, those who usually post on forums with feedback like that aren't going to comment when its going great guns.

Personally I'd go with iiNet. I'm with Optus (Cable) now and looking at iiNet.

As I said I have the 80GB plan with TPG and it's 40GB/40GB off peak/peak. The times aren't great though as off peak is 2:30am-8:00am.

Speeds as I said before too. I have never had it drop below 5mbp/s which is more than enough (Upload speeds are pretty awful though, about 0.25mbp/s). Heard from a mate that TPG is known for drop outs too, hasn't happened to me either.

I don't know what iiNet is like personally. But so far TPG have been fine and are certainly giving value for money.

We are looking at TPGs 90gig ADSL2 plan and an iinet ADSL2 plan, anyone had any positive and negative experiences? We are leaning towards TPG.
This is the third week i have been waiting for TPG to swap my internet over from optus. They said 3-5 working days and its at about 11+ working days so i cant say I am too happy with that. Hopefully when it is upgraded i have no further problems

TPG say there are no available ADSL2 ports, everyone else says they have them available.

Am i right to call bullshit on TPG? Is there a waiting list for the ports to open up or what?
It was strange for me. The thing on the website had said for ages that TPG had ports for ADSL2+ available in my area. Then suddenly when I was about to join it showed up as none.

Ringing up though revealed that there WAS indeed a port there to be used and I managed to get it.

So maybe give them a ring if you haven't already.

I've been with iiNet for a long time now [9 years] and I've been generally happy with them. The modem plays a big part when it comes to connection speeds, the one supplied by iiNet was crap, however I bought AirPort Extreme and all of a sudden it was a whole different story.

iiNet's speed have nothing on the blistering pace of Bigpond......just call their support and watch how fast they can run away from their responsibilities....it's Usain Boltish I tell you......:p

Mainly depends how far from the exchange you are, whilst ADSL2+ can get speeds up to 24mbps, this is only if you live right on top of the exchange which is bloody rare (although I do have such a lucky mate), you should check how far you are from the exchange first, also, are you on wireless? Your router might be a problem and as well as that, don't expect a wireless b/g router to give you anywhere near as good throughput as a wireless n.

How do you find out where the exchange is? I am from Western Australia but yeah dunno where it is. Surely I couldn't be that far from the exchange? I only connect at like 2000kps - that is pretty bad for ADSL2 isn't it? I use a pretty new (around 1 year old) Belkin router. The phone line that plugs from the wall to the modem looks damaged, like wires hanging out etc not sure if that would result in slow speed or just not working at all. How much does it cost to get telstra to look at the line? Over the past years we have had quite a few problems to be honest, not sure if all this adds up. I am sure though last time it stuffed up that telstra would've corrected it?

I seriously don't get it though. 2000kps is weak everyone else seems to get good connections. Dunno what to do.

Hi there,

The quality of your phone line plays a big part in determining what speeds you will obtain from your ADSL2 service. Have you tried plugging in a phone on it's own to hear for any static on the line? If there is any static on the line, then possibly the insulation of your copper line is low, or possibly some power leak, causing foreign battery voltage etc

All of these factors will cause your service to run slower than it should.

Another thing to consider is your internal setup - i.e. internal wiring, sockets, other phones, filters etc.

Try isolating the modem with a new phone cable and no phones or filters connected and try a speed test at ozspeedtest.com and see what you get.

Also, do you have Foxtel digital with a phone cable in the back to order Box Office movies? Is that filtered? Try removing that as well.

If that all fails, call your ISP and see if they can do a metallic line test (MLT) in order to see if there are any faults with the line.

Hope that helps.

Cheers.
