OK everyone, as you all well know the great carlton football club is heading towards a second consecutive spoon.

Im looking for ideas based on ALL ASPECTS of the football club that can help turn this situation around. Everything from general management to our newest recruits.

One problem i've identified recently that i believe is a SERIOUS issue, is that there is little or no PASSION within the football club. Now this is not from the players, but rather from Smorgan and im sorry to say, Denis Pagan. Now i do belive Denis to be a good coach, but i would love to see him wear his heart on his sleeve a little bit more, and speak openly about his goals and feelings about the club. This would appease the minds of many more supporters and instil a sense of pride among the ranks.
Smorgan, although may be a good businessman, exhibits no care for the club. Listening to this man on the radio the other day, he came accross as an absolute bore and showed NO humour or belief. Is this the kind of man we want controlling the entire club? Id take someone like Jeff Kennet (with his tastless jackets, but at least it shows PRIDE) or an Eddie Mguire who obviously LOVES his football club anyday of the week.

Also, we all know that the COACHING STAFF are going to be overhauled by the end of the season. I say bring in some former players from the glory years. Bradley? Mckay? Peter Dean? Im not sure who's available for a position, but we should definately look at bringing true bluebloods back to the club.

Also, theres no doubt we will be a much more mature team in 3 years or so. But theres no way known with all the talent we have at the club that we'r a 2 win a year team. But obviously we have to make wise DRAFT choices. Sadly, the saddington idea doesnt look as though its going to pay off and we need to tackle each choice with a vission. On the weekend young Bryce Gibbs got 37 disposals and 6 goals for Glenelg. Will we be absolutely idiotic for not taking him number 1? Or is hansen truly the wiser choice to plug into our team structure?

Well anyway, sorry for ranting and raving, but id really like to know who has some genuinely good ideas for the club.

Discuss-

Things to do list:

1. Start creating our "Welcome Bryce Gibbs" posters. Maybe we could make it Navy Blue with his name spelled out with silver sparkles.

2. Get Brett Ratten and Silvagni back to the club as assistant coaches.

3. Continue our attempt to con the AFL into buying Princes Park.

4. Make Fev captain, with Nick Stevens and Lance as Vice Captains. Dump the rest of the leadership group and tell the players that each and every one of them are leaders and should start acting like it. Send them on a leadership course. Bring in guys like Steve Waugh, Ron Barrassi, Stephen Kernahan and Andrew Gaze to talk to them about what it means to be a leader and what sportsman and teams have to do and sacrifice if they are to be successful.

5. Get rid of the new white jumper and make it silver instead (just a personal opinion).

6. Force the entire player group (with the exception of some forwards and defenders) to go on cross country runs every single week during the pre season. Also get tapes off C7,10 and 9 (or even tape them ourselves) of Robert Harvey, Craig Bradley, Shane Crawford and Ben Cousins playing the game when they were at their best. Point out that how they are always on the move, always running to put themselves into a position to get the ball or help their team mates.

That's for starters.

Add a training drill where the players have to consistently hit a moving target by foot over a 40m distance. Make them focus on good disposal and not on the pressure around them.

Add a training drill where a player has to handball out of a pack onto a moving target. Make them focus on using the ball instead of just retaining possession.

Add a training drill where players have to time their run outside contests. Make it second nature for players to provide options instead of spectating.

firstly lets look at bringing the best people to the club- just because someone was a former carlton player does not mean they are the best person for the job.

the players need to show more passion, at the end of the day the 22 selected, win or lose the game.

get all players to seriously work on their goal kicking

get all players to work on their on field talk

get all players to work on their tacking

get all players to work on their shepherds and blocks

get all players to work on thier fitness so they can run all game, so they can have a 2nd and 3rd and 4th effort.

get all players to work on thier basic skills

get all players to work on improving their intensity. have a look on saturday at the pre game warm up and you will see how lazy our players are and the complete lack of intensity they show in their warm ups. missed targets, dropped marks, kicking around corners- we make basic football mistakes when there is no pressure on, no wonder our skills are poor in a game when there is pressure on.

board to stop interfering in the football departmenst business, they hired these people, now let them get on with thier jobs and back their decision to originally hire these people. if the board believe they have made mistakes in hiring these people them maybe the board are not actually the right people to run the club.

board to concentrate on developing a sound business plan and not interfere with onfield matters

the board and club to stop airing their dirty laundry through the media

the club as a whole need to take responsibility, from board, to coaching staff to players and even supporters.

IMO pagan is the right man for the job and this season I have seen enough improvement to suggest we are on the way up (win/loss may not suggest this but win/loss is not looking at the big picture)
as a club we still have a lot of hard work in front of us but we are taking steps in the right direction.

The art of knowing when to retain possession and when not to is very important too. There's no point moving the ball on if your just giving it to a teammate under pressure or giving it directly to an opponent. It's something many of our players don't understand and something that's becoming more and more important in todays game.

Have you seen our banners? They are horrendous! He'd be lucky to get a crayola drawing with his name on it.

I was at the game on the weekend and I couldn't believe how bad it was. The cheer squad are a disgrace if that's the kind of crap they're putting out. The only excuse for it that I can even think of is that a sponsor stopped paying us and we had to remove the ad at the last minute. Hope its not true but its the only excuse. Poor :thumbsd:

When I went to the game in Adelaide this year I was sitting with the cheer squad (the less said about that the better) however one of them was telling me they have been requesting new stencils, etc from the club for the last 18 months to no avail.

I know it's only a banner, but the poor state of the banner replicates the poor state of the club.

PART ONE

1. Appoint a President with vision and a positive approach to management.
- Sticks
- Ahmed Fahour
- Daniel Grollo
Sticks is the likely choice as a representative, but would need a excellent support crew.

2. Micheal Malouf is a good manager as such, but as we all know is business there are those that manage the status quo and those that break new ground. I feel that Micheal is employed and was hired by a conservative administration and he is of a similar mould. We need someone who is pro-active and a has vision. I have no likely candidates on hand but would suggest someone from either a sporting field or entertainment back ground with a strong focus on marketing and business developement.

3. Complete restructure of the football department. Starting with new assistant coaches, I don't think they are the sole problem and that should be made clear. It is time to refresh the players and our coach with some new input.
Candidates
- Brett Ratten
- Adrian Hickmott
- Guy Mckenna
- John Longmire
- Garry Hocking
- Craig Braddely
- Barry Mitchell
- Kenny Sheldon
- Robert Harvey (if he retires)
- Glen Archer (if he retires)

Fitness and Physical conditioning staff will need to be replaced, I feel our methods are longer up to date. Sure enough we don't have the facilities but there are other ways to cross-train our players.

We need a player developement manager, their main focus should be the general well being and developement of draftees and new recruits. The person should focus on individual needs as well as team dynamics. As this would not be a completely full time role the candidate could also be involved in recruitment along with Wayne Hughes. This in my opinion would be the ideal position for Kenny Sheldon or a Craig Bradley. The candidate would have a vast knowledge of football and excellent relationships throughout the afl.

Recruitments review should determine whether or not we are providing enough resources to this area. Does Wayne Hughes have enough support from scouts and is he got the resources to act on information. Wayne should be working hand in hand with player developement as the player developement manager is integral in the next phase of the recruits career.

Specialist skills coaches with excellent technical knowledge. Their should be a big focus on building confidence amongst the team, not just in themselves but in each other too. Once confidence is lift the skill level will lift as a result.

Ran out of time today, I will submit the next part ASAP and will focus on the playing list with a good focus on leadership.

Feel free to pick this apart, afterall it is merely my opinion and wild theories.

Not bad, we'll become a team of homosexual space explorers.

Haha, nah i like your ideas but i dont mind the clash jumper, as long as its only worn with blue shorts! Look at how silly Freo are running around in that all white atire. Dreadful.

Defnately agree with those who want to impliment and intensive skills overhaul.

And yes, we need some fresh faces and ideas around the club.

keep up the good ideas everyone!

Yeah I think Blue Feaver is right in his point about our recruiting department. I think if you're going to have a youth policy and a lot of draft picks to use, you should be employing extra scouts and resources to it.

The club tried to make some changes to the football department by taking on TD and Gary Dempsey in part time/specialist positions, but I feel they just went about it the wrong way. The problem is not the expertise of the coaches, its the constant message that they are sending. When you have players from other clubs with little or no prior connection come to the club, often it doesnt work quite as well as if you had someone with the same connection, i.e. Paul Roos and John Worsfold, for example. You need the passion for the club coming through. Get someone like SOS, or Braddles, or Rats or another one of these blokes who was there in the good times, who has the connection and the club at heart to come in with a fresh perspective.
I for one am sick of the same tired messages Denis Pagan gives the supporters- if that is the line he gives us, the line he gives the players must be wearing thin on them as well.

This is a dodgy idea but if we finish last and have preseason draft pick 1 and national draft 1, is it possible to ask Lachlan Hanson to not nominate for the national draft and infact nominate for the preseason draft? Then we would obvisouly pick him up then with our pick 1?

Why the hell would he want to do that?

And no I don't think that's legal.

Could you please explain why you would want Stevens to be vc? Surely this would just set the club's passion back even further.

Horrendous isn't the word. Embarrassing fits though!

I want a leader for the forward line (Fevola), a leader for the back line (Whitnall) and a leader for the midfield. The only other option for our midfield leader is Scotland at this point and since the club seems to rate Stevens as a leader I chose him.

So easily we start bagging. Lets keep up the good work on suggestions.

DIET

Not sure how much attention is paid to this during the week, ar eth eplayers allowed to eat what they want, are they given some guide lines or a strict diet imposed. there is little doubt that a well controlled diet makes mountains of difference to both endurance and conditioning. Ill start a players restaraunt if that helps.

Get outside the friggin box.

Yeah I know its a cliche, but so what.

Show videos of the predacious nature of sharks on a shoal of sardines, how they never stand still are constantly at motion etc etc.

Palates for inner strength and core training.

Wing Tsun Kung Fu or Karate training. (No not for fighting) But rather breaking tackles and using a players weight against them. leg training and balance.

Krav Manga (for fighting....!!) for breaking tackles in close weight defelction.

And of course some guymnastic training for jumping leaping etc.

Mediation and visualisation techniques.

Read books. movies are great for inspiration but geeze aone book a month isnt hard, will help them out no end. Id rather see a team of smart blokes (Hirds, Andy McKays, Mike Fitzpatricks ) than a bunch of no brainers. (Sorry Renee Kink). I dont mean to make them geniuses but rather inpsirational. Think of these for starters:

Fatal Shore (Robert Hughes).
A fortunate life. (A.B.Facey)
Morrison of Peking (cant remember but one of the bographies is great the other is pox).

Any of these is enough to inspire a man to do better. And it wouldnt take more than the merest mention by Pagan of any scene in any of these to toughen a bloke up beyond imagination. "You think you've got it tough mate, think about Rufus Doors !!"

So much better than the biography of Greg Norman or something.

We could offer more money in the preseason draft, but yeah i think it is illegal and he would have to nominate for national draft.

I dont know if its allowed or not but I like what you are getting at.Perhaps a trade were we end up with picks 1 & 2or3.Gibbs and Hansen would be sensational in one hit.
