Long term Future
2007 was a year in which James Hird was terrific and was a big factor in each of your first 7 wins, and any other game he played. His last game represents what legends are made of. Other guys also had real good years too, Fletch and co too had brilliant moments.. But Hird then Davey got injured, Fletch got sorer each week and eventually your season went awry, the end result 12th Position.
Carlton yielded a further Pick 1, 3 and 20. This adds to the previous picks 1,1,2,4,9,17,19 in the last 4 years with many more young stars to build around. It will be interesting in the next 3-5 years where the Bombers and Blues will be. ..
Essendon needs to replenish via the draft and bottom out for a few years to rebuild. This could be a great thing for the club, where instead of making up the numbers in the 8, your team has the best chance to secure the best talent.
It puts you in a better position of strength in the long term.
Time will tell, if finishing last 3 out of 5 years brings better value than than respectable finishes each year. To get close to the teams of 95 and 2000, both teams need to rebuild and take the big hits to be better of in the future.
One could say that the sanctions imposed back in the 2002 netted a much greater reward in the long term for Carlton.
Look at the Hawks now..it worked for them...This is the first time in 6 seasons there playing finals and think over the next few years where they might be?????
