So the masses believe we are in for a tough year. We will not improve as we have lost Waite and our list is over the hill. But is that necessarily true. I want to analyse our list of likely players for 2015 and compare their output in 2014 to what improvement we might expect in 2015

1. Lets start with our "big loss" Mr Waite. Last year he played only 16 games and kicked 29 goals. His obvious replacement is Liam Jones. Liam is capable of kicking a similar amount of goals having kicked 22 from 19 games in 2013. Liam is also more likely to play the whole season than Waite. Still on balance we will LOSE out on waite going, but I suspect that the difference wont be as drastic as is being feared

2 Walker. Only played 14 games last year. he was clearly hampered in some games. He should come back and be able to IMPROVE on 2014

3 Menzel. The sort of player that you expect to just keep improving. He will have the benefit of another preseason. Should IMPROVE

4 Murphy. Struggled early in 2014 with injuries and the leadership. Was tagged very heavily due to injuries to Judd and Thomas. Showed improvement in the second half- should continue to IMPROVE

5 Gibbs. Had a great year in 2014. One suspects that he has finally found his niche as an onballer. Expect MORE OF THE SAME

6 Judd. Injuries reduced his output and influence last year. But is back fitter than ever and is really enthusiastic. Should IMPROVE

7 Simpson. Had a very solid 2014. Hard to see him improve on that. expect MORE OF SAME

8 Buckley. Had a breakout year that was crueled by injury. Expect IMPROVE

9 Kreuzer. Played just 1 game in 2014. Should IMPROVE

10 Cripps. Hopefully will commence his inside mid role as an extractor . Expect IMPROVE

11 Yarran. Had a very good 2014 under MM. expect MORE OF SAME

12 Docherty. Showed us last year that he can become a key player. Injured. Expect IMPROVE

13 Rowe. The big surprise of 2014. I expect MORE OF SAME

14 Jaksch. Will play most games this year. A big upgrade on White . IMPROVE

15 Henderson. Was well down in form early on and was carrying an injury. Expect IMPROVE

16 Whiley. The replacement for Brock? Seems like IMPROVE

17 Bell. Had a mixed year. but with our midfield back he could IMPROVE

18 Everitt. was a great addition to the team last year. Had injuries -17 games. IMPROVE

19 Curnow. A key player that was injured only managing 15 games. IMPROVE

20 Thomas. looks set to resume midfield duties. His fitness seems much improved on 14. IMPROVE

21 Jamison. Had a solid year. Expect MORE OF SAME

22 Casboult. With another preseason, his fitness will improve further IMPROVE

23 Tuohy . Last year he took a step backward. appears back on track IMPROVE

24 White . Had a solid season, but had to take 3rd tall. With lesser duties could IMPROVE

25 Carrazzo. Still a great player. Played 14 games. Will IMPROVE

26 Sheehan. Showed that he has what it takes . Only played 4 games IMPROVE

27 Byrne. Many are predicting big things for him. IMPROVE

Yeah good write up, a (supposed) easier draw will also help.

My concerns are:
Rucks are a worry;
Back-line and on ballers look ok;
Forward line - Hendo & Menz are locks, but we have no recognised crumber and our 2nd & 3rd kpp's haven't shown they can play consistent AFL footy;
Jury is out re Bell & white (love their enthusiasm and aggro but both make ordinary decisions and butcher the ball);
Jury is also out re Buckley & whiley - only played a handful of games and haven't shown enough just yet;

I already have a bet on here and many things come down to one big issue.......injuries.

Of course we are not alone here but if you do your math you may find that Carlton and Collingwood have a shocking run with injuries over the past 3 years.

Given a relatively clean bill of health and the improvement will show up as a matter of course.

We will improve if we have a good run with injuries and some of our new recruits/young players have an impact.

What concerns me is:
Forward line:
- Can our tall forwards mark and kick well enough to kick a decent score.
- Can our smaller players provide better pressure and ground level crumbing.

Midfield:
We have three really good midfielders and a tagger, we need to add some very high quality players in there who can damage the opposition with their abilities.

If Cripps, Graham, Jones Whiley etc turn out no good we'll just be battlers.

I don't think there is any question that we will improve across the list - but it also depends on how much improvement the clubs around us make. If we improve 10% and everyone around us improves 12% then it will be difficult to move up the ladder. I think HARKER is on the money with injuries and how well our depth stands up - but if our first 22 stay fit I believe they are much better than 13th...

I expect we'll take a step back to go forward. We have to pump games into kids, and that means wins will be the exception. It's not about wins this year, it's about building the foundation of a flag team.

A lot of potential, not a lot of consistent output. Change that and the improvement will be enormous.

For me the biggest improvement this year will come from players having the right levels of attitude, hunger, and a team-first approach... and doing it on a consistent basis. Something that's been sadly missing in our teams since the 90s... until late last year.
Change in the team’s performance, and, in the players’ consistency of effort. If not for that, Judd would have packed up his locker and sailed off.

But Carlton, he says, is back on the right track.
“I played in good sides at West Coast where you run out and you know what you are going to get from each player each week and you know they are going to really compete and give their all,” he said.

The second half of last year was the first time I had that feeling at Carlton, where you are really confident with the guys running out each week that they were really hungry to win and give their all."

In the years preceding that, we battled with finding a team of players that were really driven to achieve success and that was frustrating for a lot of people at the footy club.

“So, to have that last year and to really feel that was something that I wanted to be part of going forward"

Juddy's not prone to making big statements so I really took these words to heart. It fill me with great hope, anticipation and excitement for 2015!

If we can bring late 2014 into 2015, and maintain the same sort of hunger and attitude from the get-go... with players "really hungry to win and give their all"... we will make big strides as a team.

C'mon boys Juddy finally saw what you are capable of, prove it wasn't a fluke!

I'm tipping us to play finals. GO BLUES!!

*Injury Gods please be kind to us*

Well look I know Juddy is commenting to sell memberships but in our second last game we lost by 103 points. :eek: Even allowing for the captain being subbed out, that's a shocker.

With Kreuzer out for the early part of the season, I'd only make 5 mandatory changes to our round 22 side.

the side then looks better than 103 point loss, but we still have a lot of ground to make up. :( We don't have a hell of a lot of depth, so mature age recruits will have plenty of opportunities.

tuohy jamison white
docherty rowe sheehan
carrazzo gibbs curnow
simpson henderson yarran
menzel casboult thomas
wood judd murphy
bell walker buckley everitt
emerg graham cripps watson

2014 players that didn't make the squad of 25: Kreuzer (inj), Giles (inj), Armfield, Ellard, Warnock plus the omitted Holman and Johnson.

in: henderson, thomas, everitt, walker, buckley
out: graham, holman, johnson, lucas, waite

Why people keep having Cripps out of the team amazes me the only way we go up the ladder is by playing younger players and get them to improve enough while Murph, Gibbs ect still in their prime.
Also we payed big dollars to get Daisy from Collingwood if he is fit he must play big midfield minutes. Dont need big cash sitting in a forward pocket

Great effort, mate.

I agree with you that our list should improve in 2015, but I think you might need to put down those rose-tinted glasses — you can't seriously think that no one on our list will take a step backwards? There are a few that fall away each year in every team.

Injuries aside for a moment, and I hope I'm wrong on this, but there are a number of candidates that could be considered more likely to slip rather than improve (or see more of what we saw in 2014), notably: Kreuzer, Carrazzo, Judd, Walker, Tuohy, Casboult, Watson, Bell, Jones — and I believe to have any chance of the 8, we need at least half these guys to play at least close to their potential. We just don't have the depth otherwise.

We still lack the amount of number of players of quality who can run through the middle of the top clubs. Judd, Murphy, Gibbs & Curnow aside who else goes through there that could do a job elsewhere. Cripps could develop this year into another number to throw in the mix. Everitt is a decent pinch hitter. Bell is so-so. And we aren't sure if Carazzo will get over the 2014 injury problems or if age is catching up with him.

Also Everitt & Murphy aside that is a slow on-ball division compared to most others

We also have a very limited amount of mids who look capable of 25+ possession games. A lot of hontest players who get the 12-20 mark but we don't have many players we can look to be top possession getter in a game. Again Gibbs, Murph & Judd only 3 who come to mind as guys who it wouldn't be a great shock to see rack up 35 touches

Is it really though?

Are Mitchell, Lewis, Hodge that much faster?
Kennedy, Hanneberry, Parker etc?

The outside run has to have the legs and even though we may not have enough of that quite yet we will just have to see what we have with Boekhorst now to accompany Yarran, Buckley etc.

Those sides also have Jetta, McVeigh, Jack, Rohan, Hill, Rioli, Smith, Shiels etc. able to pinch hit who all have pace. Yarran and Buckley normally play in defence, you'd hardly see them run through the middle

More speed is needed but getting first use helps everyone look faster.

Who have North got? Wells. That's it.

Dal Santo & Harvey maybe old but are no slouches. Atley, Bastinac and Swallow I wouldn't call slow either. It's the depth other sides have in there over us too. I've just named 5 guys plus you mentioned Wells who I'd say would all be at least our 4th best mid (maybe not Dal Santo who is more a HB now)

Dal Santo isn't quick. Why not have Gibbs for us then?
Atley plays back......Thought that didn't count. :) He's no Judd.....or is he.
Swallow?

We need more players that can go through the middle which is why we've been courting Treloar.
SOS.............its up to you.

I'd back Dal Santo & Swallow in a relay over Bell & Carrazzo! Agreed Atley plays back more than middle but does pinch hit at times, and is another player who can get his hands on it 20+ times a game.
