Debate re young Bell. I have been amazed that he is at best borderline best 22 with most of the opinions posted here. Have to agree with Windhover. Came from a mile back in 2012 to show great promise and a point of difference for our midfield. Our poorer performances were almost all attributed to our "star studded" midfield being outmuscled...even "monstered". Juddy has been worked and tagged in to almost mediocrity. Murph and Carrots are both A Grade mids, but do not have the physical prescence to dominate a strong opposition. Robbo's kamikaze attack on the ball is often unstructured. Many in our classy midfield are undersized. Natural improvement from more time in "the system", his imposing size and stamina and the ability to find the ball, get his hands free, block and also tag more than offset his sometimes untidy disposal by foot. Decision making will be largely "programmed" in with the Malthouse coaching disciplines, as opposed to the "Ratten rush".
So much competition for spots, so many talking up Yarran and Lucas, even Garlett to go through the midfield. So many are so misguided, we need size and strength to complement our "stars" (and to lengthen Juddy's career). If we rotate some new names through the midfield, we need the physical likes of Bell, Robbo, Tuohy and Walker, with a splash of "outside" from Yarran and the like.
Not going to compare Bell to Andrew Carrazzo, and I don't think that was what was being done. I just can't see Mick passing up on the starch he offers to our mids. If C Judd's body is not already spent, the injection (topical reference) of Tommy Bell and a couple more big bodies could see him return to his exalted status in the game. No more stop Judd....stop Carlton.................. please.
Looking for the KEY to a flag, might just be as simple as ringing the BELL.

Carrazzo is clearly better than Bell, but Bell seems to be deserving of a spot, and there is no reason as to why they could not be played together.

I agree with everyone.
So there.

We're in a very good position if Bell isn't in our best 22. I think he's got more up-side than anyone else on our list.

Is anyone actually arguing to the contrary?

Plenty of disagreement last year..on the notion that we lacked size in the engine room...or to put it another way - who in our midfield apart from Rookies Bell and Curnow have the size to match it against the bigger bodied mids that the better teams enjoy? McLean and Carrazzo are good inside players - but really play 'above their weights' ..

We have a group of players who can play tough football but for various reasons, failed to do so as a unit for long periods of 2012.

Judd, Carrazzo, McLean and also Murphy are all capable of putting in significant grunt work and accumulating contested possessions. Add another in Robinson who I'm thinking will continue to improve in that area as he spends more time through the middle of the ground. Then we have the likes of Curnow, Ellard and of course Bell waiting in the wings who we know won't take a backward step. Simpson and Armfield are more outside but we know they will go without hesitation at every opportunity, as will Scotland. Tuohy is another who is tough as nails who may spend more time up the ground than he has previously.

We had a horrific year in 2012 across the board and our inside game disappeared at times. However the personnel we have available when at full fitness doesn't mirror that performance and I'm confident that we'll tell a different story in that regard in 2013. Bell is a really good option to have up our sleeve and no doubt he will see senior action in 2013 but do we need him as a result of what we saw on the field in 2012? No I don't believe that to be the case at all. That's why I don't have him in my side for round 1 and I can't see that changing between now and then.

We have a lot of players in our best 22 until such a time we table our best 22.

Bell has impressed in the pre-season to date, so he has as much a chance as several others, but there's nothing yet to suggest he'll be a definite starter, although it is definite he won't be taking Carrazzo's spot if he does indeed start.

I dunno which Nick Duigan these guys are watching suggesting he's "so versatile"...?

You could readily give Bell a go at sub to come in and make an impact (very literally) in the second half. Or possibly as a bench option. He's battling Ellard/Curnow in this line up. McLean, too, if last year's ludicrously good form can't hold.

Obviously they're INSANE to not have Yarran in the 22, but otherwise it sounds about right. Casboult will get first go at being the second forward to Waite because, if nothing else, his body is well and truly ready and he can take big grabs. Mitchell the alternate. Everything else is about right.

Wouldn't it be sweet if we could name Laidler, Jamison and Henderson in the backline every week? Seriously, if we cold magically guarantee 20+ games from each of them in a year, I'd LOCK us for top 4. But... we've never got close to seeing that.

If Waite is out injured and in doubt for round 1, I would be putting a lot of time into getting Squidda, Rowe and Casboult kicking straight and causing problems for defences over the next couple of weeks. That way, if Waite doesnt come up, we have cover ready to roll...

You guys crack me up. :D
You think they're being funny? What do you mean, you mean the way they talk? What? Funny how? What's funny about it? What did ya say? Funny how? You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little screwed up maybe, but what they said about Yarran is funny how, I mean funny like he's a clown, that he amuses them? They make you laugh, they're here to ****in' amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How are they funny?
