We have a lot of players in our best 22 until such a time we table our best 22.

Bell has impressed in the pre-season to date, so he has as much a chance as several others, but there's nothing yet to suggest he'll be a definite starter, although it is definite he won't be taking Carrazzo's spot if he does indeed start.

Thanks for the information re Bell's pre-season Harks as I, like many, are indebted to you for your objective assessments of training and intraclub games. Having started the Bell-ringing (on this thread) I perhaps should explain what I meant by saying I would start Bell in the midfield ahead of Carrazzo. I completely agree he won't take Carrazzo's spot as our number 1 tag/run-with player and I agree that we need Carrazzo in that role.

When I stated I would start Bell in the midfield ahead of Carrazzo what I had in mind was starting a match with say Judd, Murphy and Bell in the middle for the opening bounce. There would be no player in there designated as a tagger as we would back Judd and Murphy against anyone. Bell would be in the middle to run interference with the opposition midfield and clear space for Judd and Murphy. After the centre bounce Carrazzo would come in from a wing and take up his usual role on, say Cotchin in the first game. Bell would go to the wing and from there would be able to come in and blind-side opposition mids at clearances up and down the ground. A bit like Dipper, going back, Mainwaring or Millane. Let's face it if Bell can make Lenny Hayes think twice he is going to be putting a whole heap of implied pressure on opposition players even if he never gets a kick. A bit like Hamil - particularly after he went to St Kilda.

You are no doubt correct to say that Bell is no certainty to make our starting 22 but FWIW (presumably not much in some quarters) IMO he walks straight in.

I think it's more a case that we just don't know how MM wants to play the game and which players are most adept to absorb his instructions.

Strength, speed and endurance will hold Bell in good stead but there's still a bit to be played out before we can lock him in, along with many other players also.

I find it quite exciting actually.
