Now we are free from the machinations of the parasite, of pond scum and we are free to forge a new destiny, at a new oval. This will culminate in the brutal crushing of our enemies, their names have been taken and their days of punishment will come!

Finding out we are now free, immediately made me think of Harrison Bergeron:

"I am the Emperor!" cried Harrison. "Do you hear? I am the Emperor! Everybody must do what I say at once!" He stamped his foot and the studio shook.

"Even as I stand here" he bellowed, "crippled, hobbled, sickened - I am a greater ruler than any man who ever lived! Now watch me become what I can become!"

'and allows for a self-appointed Board with membership-voted presence.'

If anything we just became less accountable.

No longer can SANFL direct/veto board membership, amongst other things. Maybe still not where a lot of supporters would like, but a huge step for mankind in that we have shaken off the SANFL control. A control that meant all things AFC must primarily and ultimately serve SANFL. Although they will still extract their pound of flesh for 10-15 years (whatever), it is the first and major step.

We've replaced a system where we had a clearly identified owner to whom the board was accountable with a system in which the board appoints itself, and is only accountable to itself.

Haven't we merely switched one 'owner' to another?

Turn the club over to the Members! Why do 'they' get to own it?

As an aside - Port's 'independence' agreement is that they reduce member appointed board members from 4 down to 2. The AFL will now be the big and only boss.

In theory perhaps, but in practice, can't be less accountable if can have a member-elected board member!
