FREMANTLE coach Mark Harvey said there would be sweeping changes to his injury-ravaged side after the gut-wrenching loss to Richmond.
Harvey also called for radical change to the interchange system after the Dockers finished with just 17 fit men on Saturday night as the Tigers surged to their second win of the season.

The Dockers lost utility Des Headland (thigh) and first-year star Stephen Hill (corked leg) in the first half at Subiaco Oval.

Luke McPharlin (cork) limped out the final term, ruckman Michael Johnson (ankle) hobbled all day and Antoni Grover (shoulder) was limited.

As well, rover Byron Schammer, who missed a set shot from 30m to put Fremantle in front 12 minutes into the last term, suffered groin cramps.

I think you can add Hasleby to that list.

He didn't look comfortable to me

Realfooty had the injuries from the weekend listed as:

That's a bit of a knee jerk reaction from Harvey - "Harvey also called for radical change to the interchange system".

How often does this happen?

Then in his press conference he urged the AFL to expand team lists. That's hardly necessary considering there are still quite a few fit players running around including rookies. There's 4 at the Swans alone - Hinkley, Pratt, Pearce and Walters.

I would suggest dire injury concerns would equate to literally nobody being available.

I had to LOL when he went down after being laid out by Mundy.

On all fours trying to have a second look at his dinner. And none of the trainers going to him. You know you suck when even the waterboys refuse to help you. Poor ****er. :o

I didn't see what happened to him. Do you think it was due to being rushed back in?
Muscle imbalance is a very real long term problem for him now.

ahh OK. I guess the more games you can squeeze out of him the better.

I'm not a huge Headland fan (surprise) but it's undeniable he is a class above many of the blokes running around for you guys at the moment.

FREMANTLE midfielder Des Headland is not expected to face Port Adelaide this Saturday night after injuring his quad against Richmond in round 10.

Headland made a bright start to Saturday night’s three-point loss to Richmond, booting two goals and taking a spectacular mark before injury struck just before half time.

Headland and Michael Johnson (ankle) both had scans on Sunday and the results will be discussed at a planning meeting late on Monday.
Draftee Stephen Hill (cork) is unlikely to play this week.

However, Paul Hasleby (calf), Antoni Grover (shoulder) and Byron Schammer (groin) were all carrying injuries.

All three will be monitored this week, but the club is confident they will be available.

The versatile Kepler Bradley, speedster Clayton Hinkley and rookie Clancee Pearce are all possible inclusions this week to cover injury, while Fremantle coach Mark Harvey suggested Ryan Murphy, Daniel Gilmore and Adam Campbell may be pulled out of Monday’s Foundation Day WAFL fixtures.

Gah!

That's a bit of a knee jerk reaction from Harvey - "Harvey also called for radical change to the interchange system".

He's been calling for a change to the interchange all year. First because of the heat that the WA teams (particularly) play in the beginning of the season, and then because of longer injury lists - and higher levels of player fatigue - that clubs have because of the increased speed of the game. It's not the first time he has brought this up.

So the injury list looks something like:

  1. Schammer: groin (test)
  2. Hasleby: calf (test)
  3. Palmer: knee (season)
  4. Headland: quad (3+ wks)
  5. O'Brien: quad (6 weeks)
  6. Grover: shoulder (test)
  7. Crowley: foot (season)
  8. Ballantyne: ankle (test)
  9. McPharlin: broken ribs (1-2 weeks)
  10. Thornton: cheekbone (test)
  11. Mayne: foot (3-4 weeks)
  12. Bradley: knee (test)
  13. Hill: thigh (1-2 weeks)
  14. Browne: hoonose (indefinite)
  15. Johnson: ankle (1-2 weeks)
  16. Hayden: broken leg (8 weeks)
  17. vanBerlo: stress fractures (??)

FMD - is that the worst it's ever been??

Then consider that Bucovaz, Connelly, Shepheard, Hall, Ruffles, Walters are all not yet ready for AFL footy - that's 23/46 players injured or unavailable...

Oh no - we're staring down the barrel of the Return of the Dumb-Arse Brigade.... :( :thumbsd:

  11. Mayne: foot (3-4 weeks)
  12. Bradley: knee (test)
  13. Hill: thigh (1-2 weeks)
  14. Browne: hoonose (indefinite)
  15. Johnson: ankle (1-2 weeks)
  16. Hayden: broken leg (8 weeks)

Hopefully in 4 weeks time we'll have all but 4 (Palmer, O'Brien, Crowley and Hayden) back.

FMD - is that the worst it's ever been??

Only time I can think of was at the end of 1997 when we just missed the finals, from memory if we beat Melbourne the next week we would've been struggling to find 22 fit players.

Who is this guy?????

Your own coach was making the exact same comments last year when your own mob were crippled by injuries.

At least 5 other senior coaches have joined harvey in the same boat asking why interchanges aren't being expanded.

Goose.

But i suppose im happier to be decimated by injury rather than decimated by an overblown perception of talent and depth

Definitely not the first time he's brought it up and other coaches have talked about it too. The issue is not just the WA thing, but the way the game is played now; if a couple of players goes down, especially a midfielder or two, then your stuffed because so much of it is about rotations/structure and, most of all, gut running fitness. Don't know how the logistics would work, but I like the idea myself.

I sit at ground level behind the opposition benches and the 2nd half was a constant procession of wounded players for us coming off and guys trying to stick it out hurting real bad. I am amazed the guys managed to get as close as they did in that game and are very proud of them.

I know which team (apart from the 1st part of the third quarter) was mentally tougher, if you think there was a lack of desire or effort by Freo then think again. If we had of won that game I would rank it as one of the best come from behind wins ever by any team.

Indeed.

Imagine having Head, Murphy Gilmore and Bradley in the same team. We'd get absolutley slaughtered.

As a side note, is our hard preseason schedule to blame for all these injuries, or is it just circumstance?

*shudders*

Some are impact - Hill, McPharlin, Ballantyne
Others were pre-existing - Bucovaz, Ballantyne.

It's similar to soccer substitution. In the NAB cup their were 2 additional players on the bench who weren't allowed on the field until they had been swapped with one of the 22. Once someone in the 22 has been swapped they weren't allowed back on again. It becomes quite strategic as to who you choose as the extra two subs, do you have you save your players for emergencys (i.e Saturday night) or do you choose a 22 with the knowledge that 2 will be subbed off at half time.

Personally I think it's a good idea, adds a lot of fairness to games when key players are injured early on.

That would also be a great way to introduce guys for their debuts, because lets face it, they rarely dominate in their first game, and it would benefit the teams to be able to select them for a 20 or 30 minute game.

HALL IS READY!!!!!

See what happens when someone goes to Easts IP?

They turn into uber guns, ultra quickly.

Where are our idiot brigade from? Souths.

You have your answer.

Move everyone to Easts.

In todays west it said the Luke Pratt was going into hospital for scans on his leg :(

McPharlin, Headland, Hill, Schammer, Haselby, Johnson, Peake, Pratt, Ballantyne, Grover, Thornton and Broughton. 12 players all injured in the same round, 10 in the same game!

Meanwhile, Channel 7 says MJ, Headland and McPharlin will miss, but Hill, Haselby, Schammer and Ballantyne should be ready to play against Port.

Any news on Broughton? Seemed to have a very good first half before tapering away, got a couple inside 50's in the last 2 minutes to try and snatch a win. Likely he will play?
