Watching Carlton over the last few years I've always been worried about the gap between our best 6 and our bottom 6. This lack of depth has always brought us undone because our top 16 have had to battle the odds, particularly against the top teams…that is why we always struggled against the top teams.
Looking at our off season list changes I have hope that we may now be able to match it with some of the big boys! I'd be interested in everyone's thoughts re who you can see coming in/going out of our best 22 from 2013 to 2014.
Ins
Thomas, Everitt, Docherty, Bell, Watson, Cripps
Outs
Betts, Duigan, Armfield, Scotland, McInnes, Casboult
I am being brutal with these changes because we have to be ruthless to have any chance of challenging the top 4. Armfield is a great team player but lacks class, McInnes gets found out in big games, Scotland has been unbelievable for us but looked a yard slower last year and Casboult shows potential but has to stop going missing during games. Obviously any of these lads could step up if required, but we have to make changes to get better.
This leaves us with players who can play multi positions and the ability to rotate players through positions, not just off the bench (having the three amigos all in the forward line last year killed our rotations).
Depth players
Scotland, Armfield, Lucas, McInnes, Graham, Graham, Cachia, Ellard, Buckley
Blokes like White, Bootsma, Wood, Casboult are then pure back up players who can step in for injuries.
