Personally I think that (team of the west) is one of the biggest furphies going around, up there with Melbourne being untouchable because they are the first team and the only team named after the city. If either club disappeared tomorrow others would pick up the opportunity of supporting the “west” or the “city of Melbourne”. That is not in any way to suggest that I want that to happen. Just think it is an exercise in trying to convince themselves.

To some extent you are right, but the Western label would certainly help garnish support from the AFL and local governments and other parties (a la the Sons of the West men's health program). Whilst other clubs do promote themselves in the area, none of them are physically based west of the Maribyrnong or have the 130+ years history or have the name. We are best placed to grow there and take on soccer but at the end of the day it's on field results that count the most.

AFL wont let us tap into Essendon's northern domain, the commission is largely filled with fat cat cronies that look after these clubs. Before settling on Ballarat we wanted to instead focus on Bendigo, given most of the Ballarat region was already strongly tied with Geelong, but we were not allowed to touch the territory belonging to Essendon.

People think I joke, but the biggest hurdle we have is the commission itself, they play Overlord in Victoria, they determine who gets a golden ride and who has to fight for crumbs.

Victoria should have no boundaries with each of the 10 clubs free to pursuit any market they want in their home territory.

Ballarat is generally a mix of supporters, if anything there's more support for the big victorian clubs.

Never even heard of half these places. Truganina, Cairnlea, Kings Park, Wyndham Vale, Seabrook.

I only know of Truganina as the place where bodies often get found in paddocks or by the roadside, usually related to drug dealing.
Is it out past Werribee ?

They're all in and around the Werribee/Point Cook/Hoppers Crossing triangle. You could label them all as any of the three places and be pretty accurate.

Do the WA newspapers give equal time/space to non-WA teams?

Course not, didn't say I had a problem with it did I?

Just flexed a little empathy on his behalf, plus added a little bit of info if anyone cared.

Mind you, the newspapers here have a hard on for the Eagles. So from my position no papers give my team a fair go.

I'm surprised there hasn't already been a thread made about this thus far, but...

In terms of each club's membership concentration:

Collingwood - 2 clusters... one 6km to 14km N of Melbourne (45%), the other in the city centre (40%)

Does any of this surprise you? How does it fit with popular / traditional supporter stereotypes?

Can I ask where are you getting the 40% in the city centre for Collingwood figure?

The only suburbs of our top 20 that are near the city centre are numbers 16 & 18 on our list. It should be noted when I click on the map they have placed our number 1 suburb, Reservoir, seemingly next to the CBD instead of ~15km north (just south of Nos. 2 & 6 - Mill Park & Bundoora).

Not a surprise that our membership is still strongest along the old Epping / Hurstbridge train lines that also goes through Collingwood and Vic Park stations. It's just that the families mostly can't afford the inner suburbs anymore and have moved further out in the same region.

You can get a good feel for this same data very quickly and easily by observing the trains coming into the MCG to Richmond and Jolimont stations. Collingwood fans dominate the Epping / Hurstbridge lines and have strong presences on most others, Hawthorn fans pack out Belgrave/Lilydale and Glen Waverley lines but have almost zero presence on lines from the west, Richmond are similarly strong on the eastern lines but have more widespread presence. St Kilda fans still congregate on the Sandringham and Frankston lines. Essendon dominate the western lines and have good representation all over etc.

The fight for Werribee and surrounds is fascinating. Seems to be a big area for Western Bulldogs, North, and Essendon in a addition to a good chunk of support for other clubs as well of course.

But the fact is that we're 'boxed in'. every other club (except Melbourne I guess) has a 'line' from central Melbourne to the outer suburbs.

We're trapped by Essendon and Western Bulldogs. The fight is between our three clubs for the North and West of the city according to the Herald Sun's interactive map.

just about to move to Berwick.. The train rides to and from Collingwood/richmond games could be fun

Where did this information come from? Was it from the AFL or some Herald-Sun poll. I seem to remember that Geelong has said there is about a 50/50 split of their members. 50% in Geelong and 50% outside Geelong, so I find the 90% figure for Geelong members being in Geelong confusing.

You're only boxed in if you think you are and let yourself be. It's not like they actually build walls to stop you.

Richmond's 'expansion zone' goes right through Hawthorn for example.

FFS it isn't a national paper producing a national article. It's an article for the papers market. Why would they pay for work that won't sell anything?
Dont know if your aware. Due to the advent of the internet everything is national. Especially if its based of a national league.

Don't know if you're aware, but people do things for money. While the content might be distributed globally, those who pay for it are overwhelmingly in Melbourne.

Thats very narrow of them though. Just basing it on vic in this day and age of national coverage.

News Ltd has a national paper, it's called The Australian. The HUN is its Victorian paper, which strangely enough focuses on issues local or concerning our local market

It's why the Hun is full of talk about afl, and the Tele is full of gossip about Lara Bingle - they are catering for their local market

So how much did you pay to read it? It isn't targeted for the NSW or Ireland market and paying for research Australia wide would be a dumb investment. It is a presentation of data for the target market. It isn't an article about the national league it is a market about Victorians support of AFL clubs. That's why support for interstate clubs is included. Some Victorians (the target market) support clubs not based in Victoria. Jesus, the entitlement mentality really has gone too far. Victorian papers don't owe you anything no matter how much jump and down.
