MATHEW Stokes cried for hours in a police cell after being arrested for drug trafficking.

In an exclusive interview with the Herald Sun, the Geelong premiership player described his decision to buy one gram of cocaine as "silly, stupid and senseless".

i wish him all the best...think both he and the club have handled the situation very well....must have been hard for the kid....and hope he comes back stronger for the experience....

we all make mistakes, its how you deal with them that counts

unfortunately, the stigma will always follow him now. it's a shame to read the ridiculous comments from herald sun readers, but i wouldn't expect any more

From the open letter on the Geelong website:

Geelong's Mathew Stokes has penned an open letter regarding his recent drug possession charge.

"The last three months have been tough, and the toughest thing about it is that I am responsible for what has happened. I have no one else to blame but myself. I’m ashamed of the disgrace I have caused to the club, the players and most of all my family. I have hurt so many people with my actions and let people down that believe in me.

I'm glad he's come through this as a better person. An immature mistake when you're in your mid 20s shouldn't affect the rest of your life. Overall, this situation was handled pretty well by the club and Stokes himself.

Now let's translate all that philosophical enlightenment into a BOG ...

Why is this an article why did Stokes have to say anything? Especially to the herald sun.

Media is not the right place to speak of this. Stokes should just go out and play and less is said the better.

I'm salivating at the prospect of Mathew Stokes version 2007 reappearing.

If he can somehow find that form again he's going to have a massive impact on our fortunes this year and that's not even considering the havoc a 2007 Stokes/2010 Varcoe combination would cause opposition defences.

Let's hope my optimism and excitement is vindicated.

Yes it does!!!

I thought I'd have a look at a few comments of the HUN readers after reading the article, & couldn't believe their self-righteousness.

Majority of HUN comments are a disgrace (as with most articles) - no surprise there. Although it was an ok read I wish Stokesy hasn't spoken to them, would rather he do the talking on the footy field.

Can't wait to see #27 out there again! :thumbsu:

Hope the club punishment has same effect on Stokes as it did on Stevie J fewyears aga . Took his game to a new level
