Pretty lame excuse all things considered. You missed something totally and ridiculously good.
Turner 28 possessions, Williams 38 possessions, GAS 22 possessions- nearly 90 possessions for that MF!

I think we knew that with his first ever game for us, let alone that first season. He was the main reason we made finals in his early seasons.
The only slight on him at times was his disposal when at full speed, and occsasionally set shots, but he is, imho, the second best ever player we have picked up from another team, in my 60 odd years of following Geelong; that's if we include GAs as coming from Hawthorn, which may not be true.
I nearly go back that far (I remember Newman playing CHF in his final year) and my top 3 GFC players in that time are GAS, Danger and Selwood. In terms of skill and impact, Danger has at times approached the incomparable Ablett Snr, and I can't think of anyone else who can come near that standard.

Interesting to compare the big 3 of Martin, Fyfe and Danger, all the same age (within a year) - Martin was average, then shone brightly for a few years before fading to insignificance, Fyfe has also faded away due to injury and form, but Danger has performed at an incredible level throughout, and continues to do so even if not quite as often now at 35 years old.

I played junior footy against Glenn Middlemiss one day. He was our age and utterly dominated our team, I thought he would become the best player ever. Didn't quite hit those heights at VFL level, so it shows how good the even better players were/are.

This is me except replace with Paul
Chapman, the day I realised I'd never play in the big league

I think many of us have similar stories. Mine is from US football in high school against future LA Ram Mark Jerue. One play, took him out with a low block, he wasn't happy. Very next play he basically picked me up and threw me a couple of yards away. :laughv1:
Concentrated on baseball after that.

Great description.
How would you have described Turner, Wojo and Varcoe?

Turner was a bit before my time, and I never saw him play. Wojo a bit similar to Mullin, maybe not quite as "busy". Of our current team, I reckon if you scaled Varcoe up to ruckman size his running style would resemble Stanley.

I strongly suspect that at the end of the year in the truly important games that Stanley will be playing.
Possibly. If SDK can do ok in the ruck, then I don't know who (in a full squad) gets dropped for Rhys.

And that in an era where 20 was a pretty decent midfield game.

I agree with the ‘not 15’ calls being increasingly policed. The rule was brought in to get rid of dinky kicks breaking up the flow and was not being adjudicated well. Still needs more consistency from the umps though.
It seemed like our 20 metre kicks were 15 and their 15 metre kicks were 20, based on the umpiring

Those things tend to take care of themselves (injury, form).

After the last few weeks, I think the MC has to realise that SDK is our best tall defender and has to play back when the games are serious.

The SDK experiment in the ruck has served its purpose, but there is no way that he is our ruck if we have most of our tall players available.

As I've posted many times I used to watch GAS at training regularly and he was astonishing in what he could do. Lovely dude back then too, almost shy.

Considering Danger has played such brutal footy for 18 seasons it's extraordinary that his body is still allowing him to perform at such a high, match-winning level into his mid 30's.

Freak.

Would likely depend on the game - post match Scott confirmed that SDK won't play permanent back, and SDK himself said he has enjoyed the versatility & flexibility that's come over the past 12 months

I think both of our posts are true.

SDK will play minutes in the ruck if we need him to. And SDK may have enjoyed the freedom of the ruck.

I could see him playing in the ruck if we are playing a soft kill opponent at KP in the middle of July.

But I also think that SDK most definitely will play defence in the important games if we have all our talls available.

Who do you think?
So many choices allrighty

Zuthrie, who’s the backline general

Atkins has the grunt, discipline, perseverance + ability. Underrated by some supporters, yet very respected by club, coaches + players.

My Boy Miers, who spent his childhood + teens rounding up kids from his neighbourhood, balancing teams to ensure good contests + helping with their skills.

Holmes. The way he plays inspires the midfielders + is strong in beg moments + breakout year in 2024. He’s determined to improve.

Comment of the week. I laughed out loud. I'd love to see a race between Max and Danger. I think Danger would beat him off the mark, but Max would go past pretty soon after.

I have ALWAYS had huge respect for Stanley as a player and bloke, and believe he is a weapon in our team when fit.

Gerard Whately had an interesting analysis, he said on Crunch Time that he thinks it’s exceptional coaching as SDK had lost his will for the contest because of injuries and then they sent him out to play against his brother in the Carlton game last year. Eg. Go play against your brother and sort this out.
Then he has built confidence in the contest playing ruck. Now that he’s back in defense he’s playing like 22 again. One of the Geelong coaches said that the experiment wasn’t over but seemed less committed to it
