I thought I could open up some discussion on the ‘mustard pot’ about my summer sport, that is cricket.
I can tell you that over the last 2 years, my interest in cricket has wavered, I mean, I find it extremely boring and disinteresting. I used to be able to watch any team play, including games on Fox Sports. Ever since 20/20 was introduced, one day cricket is so obviously dead, but also test cricket. This has been primarily due to the introduction of the IPL and the huge amounts of money involved, which has lead to changes in the quality of test cricket as these guys are training for 20/20 and the obvious lack of interest in test cricket.
I was saddened to watch a game yesterday at the MCG, where there seemed to be a crowd for a domestic game not an international game of cricket. It was disgraceful!
An example is the West Indies, where Kieron Pollard, a 20/20 star and future champion of the game in all forms, did not accept a contract from the WICB for test cricket (he is yet to play a test) as the test cricket schedule may interrupt/ clash with his 20/20 committments.
So, the million dollar question:
IS CRICKET DEAD?
I think once the poms come there will be increased interest in the cricket, but what about next year, where our team is currently not performing to the level we expect and resembles more of a ‘dad’s army’ than a cricket team.
Further, the Australian Cricket Board is losing a significant amount of cash, with decreased interest, will Channel 9 persist?
Well, what are your thoughts?
Personally, I’m old school and love test cricket and can’t stand 20/20.
