I was having a conversation over coffee this morning with a friend who's an ex Victorian keeper. He's firmly of the opinion that he'd play North as a spinner in front of Doherty or Hauritz. He also thinks we shpuld be aiming to take him to England in 18 months time as a spinner! He thinks he's got good flight and spins the thing. Also says he's had his chance as a test batsman. Sort of like a worthwhile project - nothing to lose. Interesting.

No offense to your mate, but that is an awful proposition. I think North's bowling is grossly overated. I think I'd prefer Hauritz, which is akin to saying I'd prefer dysentery to cholera.

Haha... no offense taken. I agree with you. Would be a another step back in my opinion.

sadly he's prob too old for the selectors to give him a run, but David Hussey wouldn't be a bad selection to replace North.
It's not all about blooding youth. We want to win the Ashes, and am not convinced any of these youngsters are our answer for the 3rd test.
Also reckon drop Doherty and bring back Hauritz.

Another relevant comparison would be the Poms first four wickets cost 454 runs, whereas our first 4 cost 53.

We all knew there was no coming back from 3/2 in the 2nd over, but it still hurts...

The rumour going around is that some very influential people feel Ponting has had his day - both as a batsman and a captain. Probably harsh especially re batting, but he's clearly struggling and has been for a little while.

So, when Ricky goes as captain - let's say for arguments sake it's at the end of this series - who replaces him? Like seriously. The only guy in that test side they would consider, because surely North is cooked, is Clark. who else is there? Furthermore, who else is there in domestic cricket?

I'm not making a case for Clark, I just can't see who would captain the side. Roebuck wrote another article that was spot on this morning, in my opinion. He pointed out that Doherty basically played up to his ability - averaging 50 odd in Shield. Made the case that the selectors had gone through 8 spinners since Warne retired. Pointed out that Krezja was 'outof fashion' for whatever reason.

He said that Bollinger, North and Doherty had to go. The appointment of Chappel was odd; the fielding placements odd etc I think he nailed it, but more so that the selectors and powers that be have got it wrong.

Sorry times ahead.

So who is the next captain?

It has been obvious for quite a while that Ponting is finished. He will finish the series but should not be captain as he is destroying his own reputation. Hilditch needs to go and Chappell is a poor choice as selector although Merv proved he was not up to it.

Clark hopefully will not be captain as he is not what is needed. Katich is an excellent captain but now out for series and Haddin did a good job at NSW a few years ago. Alternatively maybe Hussey in the short term but if his batting suffers we are even more stuffed.

We are coming off one of the most dominant teams in history and because they retire so late now we have lost an entire generation of cricketers in state cricket. The young blokes did not get a go and it is time to go back to basics. This series is lost so blood a few. Pick the best two youg batsmen and bowlers and get them in the team and build some support around them. As for an opener Hughes is not ready so pick an older bloke who has been around a while. Phil Jacques is tough enough but form patchy.

Tough times ahead but start right now cleaning out right from the top or we will have years of this sh*t.

I agree grizz & following on from Roebuck's article this morning, he is absolutely correct - Australian cricket has been self-indulgent. I've spent 3 miserable, depressing days at the test match - the worst I've seen Australia perform since Gavaskar, Srikkanth, Amanath & Azharuddin pounded the Australian attack for 600 back in 1986 at the SCG. At least then we could use the excuse that many of our best were playing in South Africa. There are no excuses this time. We are not good enough. That hurts.
