Is it time Eddie gave us a time for his departure?

One of the few statements to come out of Jeff's mouth that I agree with is the notion people in a position such as Eddies should set a use by date. Has Eddie reached the point where this is appropriate?

Reasons:
- his media persona is impacting negatively on the club. He has enemies out there, has a mouth and together that means flack for the club
- onfield results have declined for 5 years, overall the onfield record while he has been president is not that overwhelming
- the succession plan was a failure, Eddie, if anyone, was the architect and must take responsibility
- players leaving the club disenchanted, does Eddie bear any responsibility here
- drug issues, bad boy group, Eddie has been the constant through this period
- the whole Balme/Gubby business raises some questions about the communication within the club
- off field has been a fantastic success for the club during his presidency, hate to see it end on a bad note
- nothing worse that a strong leader having to be pushed out, leaving bad blood and a power vacuum
- the notion that his, or anyones foot, is to big to replace is always a sign things are out of balance
- 2017 is a critical year for the club. Fail to make the finals and reappoint Bucks or sack him will both feed a "someone has to pay" attitude out and potential thoughts/attempts at a coup.

I'd like to see Eddie announce his departure within a three to five year time span during this off season. Do it in style, do it while he is still loved, do it before the club is divided.

We need to let the Buckley build play out. If it fails over the next year then Ed needs to rethink his position for the sake of the club. If Buck's is successful (and with this team for years to come) then why would he have to step down. Ed was the puppeteer behind the changes. I don't give a fat rats clacker what anyone else thinks.

Hopefully the later is what happens and Ed will be Goode to keep going;)

After all he has done for the club, he has the job for life.

Just needs to cut the media commitments down a little - get away from unscripted radio and telly. Make himself a smaller target for the sake of his reputation and for the good of the club. The bloke has more coin than the Marshall islands.. no need to be everything to everyone, and his missus and kids will probably appreciate seeing more of him than the extra rental property

Eddie must never leave. The greatest president of the collingwood football club. A true powerhouse. He has even delivered a premiership which has been rare since 1958. Should go when he decides. Will stay on until he is 75.

maybe Maguire should seek counsel on this matter from your ex Prez Kennett?

Thanks muppet. You should go. Not when you decide.

If he pulls the pin and sacks bucks, as some want, he needs to go too. But I hope he sticks fat and stays on... Until he wants to retire from what must be a full on, taxing job, he can stay and deserves our respect and appreciation. The man is as passionate as it gets for the club.

What leader has a job for life? Does the club owe Eddie something? Is Eddie bigger than the club? Eddie, like all leaders, has to move on at some point in time. No player, coach or bootstudder gets to stay until they want to or stay until they fail. Why is Eddie different? Do we honor his legacy by giving him a licence no president has had in the past at the pies. I respect and admire Eddie but, frankly, those feelings don't come within a country mile of what I feel about the club. Moving on from his role as president does not lessen his legacy. Like every other position at the club the basis for stay or go should be what is in the best interests of the club.

Because without Eddie there would be no Collingwood as we know it now. I'm not just talking about him salvaging our financial position before he took over and largely debt proofing us since... but there would have been no mick malthouse era at the club, no Holden centre and Olympic park redevelopment, nowhere near 70,000 + members every year, no netball and women's team to further grow the club, no 4 grandfinals, no premiership. Eddie (with the help and input of many) has his fingerprints over all of that. The man has vision, acumen, contacts, influence and dedication.

And yet supporters forget all that because we don't play finals for three years and have bottomed out to 12th in the league of 18 teams! 11 of the last 15 flags have been won by only 4 teams (lions,cats,hawks,swans)... there are a lot of clubs not winning flags in recent times, not just ours.... and yet we won one only 6 years ago

Eddie is still able to president Collingwood and therefore still should be. He will know when it's time to move on.

Name me anyone who could do a better job than him right now?

For starters, no one is agitating to replace him. There have been murmurs about Meathead but he needs to give up his agency and I'm not sure why he would forgo so much income to do so. The board seems stable and no one from the board seems to be making overt moves to unseat him. There are no supporter groups that have any campaign of any note to challenge his presidency or the board.

So why should he be replaced in the foreseeable future? The club is in a good financial situation and in spite of all the on field issues, he has implemented changes to the footballing dept. McGuire has enough credits in the bank and also cannot be questioned about his intentions. I reckon he's good for another 3-5 years.

Ed has done many great things for Collingwood, and deserves a lot of praise.
  • But please let's not get into the cult "ed saved Collingwood from extinction etc"
Collingwood was in strife, yes.
Ed played a pivotal role, yes.
Ed deserves great praise, absolutely.
But Collingwood was NOT folding. Would not have happened, not then. No way.

As if the AFL would have let its most important cash cow fold.
The AFL would never let a generation of hundreds of thousands of supporters be disenfranchised.
As if the AFL would let its TV rights falter without Collingwood.

No Ed in those dark days? It would be a slower recovery, less direction, less stability, more angst etc.

But let's be realistic people would have supported on some level enough to get by.
Ed has done a great job, but Collingwood would have survived.

I loved the pies before Ed came along. I will love them after (if I live that long...). He has done a great job, no question, but he hasn't made the greatest and biggest sporting club in Australia. He just happens to be president of it. I count that a privilege, not a right. I hope Ed sees it that way too.

That is correct. It's a privilege not a right, not a personal fiefdom.
To quote from the movie, godfather

After all we are not communists.

Have you sacked Buckley for the 4th time yet?

Doesn't really matter what I do. Ed put the succession plan in place and it has been a complete failure. Eventually he will have to accept responsibility.

Cleaning up the mess he made?
It's not a mess.
It was a coaching change.
It's that simple.
A coaching change.
Like every club, coaches come and coaches go.
Most coach changes actually don't work out. That's the business of football.
Nathan is the coach. Mick is the previous coach. Shaw the one before, Mathews the one before that. Etc.
It's not a mess, just business. (In my view.)
