While we can't use our compo pick in the draft we can use it to trade for a player if we so desired. Hopefully we don't go down that path and hold onto it as it would be great to land 3 quality kids with our first 3 picks in next years draft.

100% behind you on that.

But are you right in saying we can trade our compo pick?? Not saying we should, actually dead set against it, but that means we can trade for Geelongs compo pick to use in 2012 if possible!!!! Correct me if I am wrong please!

Pretty sure that last years compo picks can still be traded this year.

Tipungwiti - Would be awesome if we could pick him up. Don't think he will be a top 20 pick so a potential 2nd rounder onwards. Looks a lot like a Rodan/Wonameirri type. Something we lack in the forward pocket IMO.

Witfield is eligible in 2012. Can GWS trade him in the mini draft ala O'Meara? If so, I would trade our 1st round pick, compo pick and a decent player like Rance, McGuane, Moore, Edwards or Foley for the 1st 2 picks in that draft is O'Meara and Witfield are available. However, still wouldn't be enough...

Whitfield can't be signed as a 17 year old like O'meara, Yarran etc. He is only eligible for the 2012 draft.

I watched VC v NT on saturday and I was disappointed in Tipungwiti output. He really struggles fitness wise and was forced to stay at home in the forward line for the entire second half.

He is a great talent though, Great skills when he was played through the mid and off the HBF, very good at stoppages by being able to extract from the bottom of the pack or run onto the tap and boot it forward.

If he could follow in Nahas footsteps in terms of building his fitness base he could really be somthing special.

How often does one pick a small forward as rd 1.Unlikely, even cyril late round one pick, Meyers never lived up. Could trade for GWS to get Chris Yarran WA 17 old maybe.

We can't use our compo pick this year as never nominated we would at the beginning so not going to happen .Trengrove not worth it anyway.
As for mature age, what is the point, they won't be there when we reach the final and only interfere with our development. If anything, hold us back.

We have plenty small defenders

2010 - Caddy (spent considerable time in the pocket), Harper
2009 - Rohan, Jetta
2008 - Yarren, Sidebottom
2007 - Dangerfield, Vezpremi, Rioli

The mature age player could be between 22-25 like barlow/curnow and this would be ideal to our age strucuture!

Newman, Batchelor and Houli are flankers. Farmer is the only small defender we have and he lacks pace and is a poor kick (although yesturday he played good).

setanta ohailpin mite come cheap he is no star but is versatile and could b used to plug big holes we hav eg ruck big kp

Devin smith is another one who is a small forward who is likely to go first round this year. Quite small at around 175cm but is elite in most aspects of the game and was BOG on Saturday with 27 touches and 6.2.

Plays like a Stevie j type. Finds the footy easily and clever around goal.

He should be around our pick but I'd prefer someone who wins more of there own ball.

Sumner is another who should be around our pick. Lightning quick winger, with neat footskills and solid over head

It's bizarre that this time last year, our strength was clearances and the contested ball but this year it's is an area we are well down in on game day. I wonder if we will target players to fix this or if it is something that the club feels it can coach into the group. We need a replacement for tucks hard ball winning ability as it would seem the club see no point in playing him.

I was under the impression Dea was drafted as a defender who could play on smalls. Even O'Reilly could. Both have good pace just need time to learn the game and a good run with injuries.

Geez you opened yourself up here!!

Rohan, Roos stated words to effect" we arenot sure where to play him yet" and definitely midfielder potential. Jetta, which one???? Swans is not a forward but a flanker vindicated by his shots, Dangerfield being groomed as a mid, Vezpremi, hasn't made it,Sidebottom(mid these days), Yarran backline, so that leaves Rioli who is also being used in the midfield . Caddy looked at as a mid and Harper is really second round in a non-compromised draft

Just on age we really are looking at 6 years so players 22 and over are reaally too old IMO.

Get someone 22 so you have a 4 year window before they are 32 or 33 ie ineffective in a GF . get someone 20 or under with Cotch Martin etc... your window opens up to possibly 6-11 years. Big difference to help the Tigers win the premiership glory we crave!!!

Yeah I'd hate to pick up a 23 year old Barlow and only get 5-6 years of AA form out of him before he slows down at age 28-29.

Exactly because our team is not good enough to win in the next 5 years. Wish they were but that is the way I read it.

We could have Judd for 5 years but makes no difference. For me we are in it to win premierships otherwise we are playing with ourselves in which case I have better things to do frankly

Im at the belief that hardwick has told certain players like martin to worry more about finding the outside ball.

Dangerfield may well be groomed as a midfielder but hes starting and playing the majority up forward, sidebottom is also playing the majority of time up forward, yarran granted is playing off half back but thats only because they have a wealth of good smalls (betts and gartlett).... sooo ahh whats your point?

i never said they couldnt spend time in the midfield rotations, in the modern era of football with the press its unavoidable, i would just prefer a natural small forward who plays atleast 80% of time there (aka sidebottom/beams/rioli/lecras) instead of our inside players like Martin and Cotchin who are better suited in the guts.

Make no mistake about it, our window is within the next 5 years. We need to start topping up the list now before GC and GWS get to much of a run on. To say our window doesnt start for 6 years is just wrong, IMO it will be between 2013 - 2016

The point is a lot of these players where not picked as outright small forwards. So an outright small forward is normally not first round in terms of value unless rare air like Cyril. Even Dangerfield when selected was not looked at as outright forward. Yarran was but better suited in cbackline showcasing the risk of small forwards as high draft selections like Meyers etc.. A bit like the ruck risk.

Now one thing is clear. Make no mistake our window does not start until after 5 years.

We are no chance of winning a premiership in 2 years for sure. In fact we should be in development for the next 3 years. The Wallace stuff up killed that. We need to make sure we maximise our recruiting in the next 3 years, particularly 2012, get Fyfe and Scully in 5-6 years and attack the premiership then. We have never been in a better position to set ourselves up with Martin, Cotch and JR with support to develop a premiership list if done right in a measured balanced way but we are way off ready to attack for the cup.

If we trade for picks this year, the 17 year olds , get Geelong compo we can utiise some very high draft picks in 2012, develop again in 2013 and use our new recruits of quality with Conca etc... and start the surge from there. Suggesting we have a window in 5 years is killing the prospects of Cotch Martin and JR who we are relying on and completely disrespecting the current competition opposition and the fair assessment of our current form!!!

We have never looked better for years but we are not ready to attack within 5 years. The truth is we will be taking Gold Coast head on before GWS emerges. That is more realistic than targeting the Collingwoods etc... When the cap diminishes and their older players slow they won't be as insumountable as some may suggest. Not all their high draft picks will make it and plenty will have to go elsewhere. The other thing is how much soul does the club have, another Miami heat is a possibility. For example Swallow to Judd is like comparing Brown to Carey, not in the same ball park and I don't think Judd is God like some suggest!!!

I don't want to take your money but our window will not start until 2016. If we do as you suggest the next chance we have to win a premiership will be another 20 years and I can't wait that long after the last 30!!!!
