Is the Guitar God extinct?

Marty Willson Piper from the Church is still going strong.

A Guitar God if ever there was one.

Yet more evidence of Marty Willson Piper's guitar god status, especially the last minute or so with his big solo and Pete Townshend style windmills.

Not just that. Clapton was the first guy in England playing that style of electric blues guitar. The influence he had saw guys like Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Paul Kossoff (who abandoned classical guitar for electric after seeing Clapton live), plus of course Beck and Page. Hugely influential player.

Clapton's even managed to survive the crimes of his truly awful '70s and '80s efforts. (post-Derek and the Dominoes to before Blues Before Sunrise).

Yeah, Clapton can be kind of repetitive in the actual scales and figures he plays - but he was the pioneer and thus is afforded Guitar God status (along with other contributing factors).

Clapton is easily my biggest influence on guitar - i was massively into him when i first started learning lead scales, and i tried to emulate all of his Cream and Derek and The Dominos solo's.

No the Guitar God isn't extinct.... he has a new album out on the 23rd of November :p

Fair bit of filler though.

I was waiting for Yngwie to make an entrance. Living proof that playing the guitar at an insane pace does not equal good music.

I don't think it'd be possible to have a Guitar God list that didn't include Clapton.

Anyway, I know Jack White's already been mentioned in this thread as a modern GG, a position I happen to agree with. Awesome singer and songwriter too. AND has a great stage presence.

this thread got me reading some of the top 100 guitarists lists of all time.

it's staggering how overated/underated some guitarist are

I mean how can morrello, white, ramone, cobain me top 20 guitarists?

Anyway just a few blokes who dont feature in many of the lists

Rory Gallagher - who is he? one of the greatest blues rock guitarist, yet dosn't feature in any top 100 lists

James Hetfield - writes most of the riffs, but hammet seems to take credit cos of the solos. also plays the riffs while singing

David Gilmour - simple, yet phasing and tone makes every note bring emotion

Music is so diverse these days there is not the widespread adulation for a good guitarist there may have been in previous decades. Nonetheless there is still plenty of good axemen around, and plenty of people who still appreciate it. Earthless are ripping it up..

I'm a fan of Morello but he shouldn't be top 20. All of those others plus Frusciante are majorly over rated.

Should be top 100 but has prolly been left out because he hasn't written a piece of work that is instantly recognisable. I think Frusciante is over rated but Under The Bridge is a piece of genius.

David Gilmour - simple, yet phasing and tone makes every note bring emotion
This guy should be easily top 20. Maybe top 10.

If by guitar god, you mean someone who randomly wanks over a minor pentatonic scale as fast as they can at every chance they can get...then I'm happy for them to die out.

I'm a guitarist (regularly gig with a couple of original bands), and the ones who I admire most are the ones who can create genuine feeling and emotion through their playing and writing while doing something musically interesting. Mike Einziger from Incubus, Jeff Buckley, Billy Howerdel from A Perfect Circle, George Harrison, Robert Smith of The Cure (though someone needs to burn his wah pedal nowadays), Matt Bellamy and the boys from Karnivool are some of my favourites.

cant be extinct when kirk hammett and metallica are still touring as of last Sunday.

go 40 seconds in to get to the solos with 7:27 being the pinnacle, and the One solo just after it.

That's called a w***er. not a guitar god.

All the same, these guys aren't Gods. Rather one person's favourite guitarists. I'm talking about Claptons, Pages etc. Not really any going around in modern music. The guitar as an instrument is not as popular as it once was.

Shhhhhhhhhhh. Don't mention the war here.

I also like Robert Smith and was fortunate enough to see The Cure when they were at their peak. (Commercial Peak, sorry)

Here is Under The Bridge. Just a great peice of guitar writing.

Here is an alleged "amazing" solo by JF. Pretty shit for "amazing". I don't listen to it and go "man that sounded good, must listen again". It's all over the place and lacks feel.

An amzing guitar solo? Have a listen to Santanas solo off that latest song with Chad kroegerback:

No particular reason i chose this solo out of 1000s of others, but it is smoking. The difference in feel between Santana's and Frusciante's solos is dramatic.

Frusciante = good but waaaay over rated.

good call. ****ing sensational band, and absolutely carve up live. Themata (both the song and the album) should be ranked up as high as anything any Australian band has done.

Hopefully Ian Kenny gets back to work with the boys.

Music is so diverse these days there is not the widespread adulation for a good guitarist there may have been in previous decades.

i reckon there are just so many more avenues for someone to discover music these days that it kinda dilutes the level of popularity of the top artists.
