If Essendon supporters though that last Thursdays dismal 'effort' was as bad as it could get, then they sure would have liked to miss watching this abysmal display of football. Poor skills, poor delivery, it was slow it was painful, so painful it could almost be compared to masturbating with a cheese-grator (but even then that is slightly amusing.) Fremantle certainly wanted to redeem themselves after their loss to Geelong last week. First gamer Shane Harvey opened proceedings booting a great goal along the ground from the boundary line. Shortly after Longmuir squandered several set shots and the Dons let at the first change by 5 points.
The second quarter was again an even affair. Trent Croad and Jeff Farmer both had chances to score early on yet missed. Adam Ramanauskas had a chance to increase the lead further and he missed. James Hird also thought it would be a good idea to kick a behind and so he added another point to the score after he tried to play on after a mark in front of goal. Later Blake Caracella managed to do something that the Dons didn't do much at all during the game and run inside the 50 and goal. In the process Trent 'The Athlete' Croad slung him to the ground concussing Caracella who was stretchered off the field. After that Bell, Medhurst and Longmuir all scored leaving the Dockers with 3 unanswered goals. After 2 great first quarter goals, Shane Harvey then capped of some great team work with his 3rd for the day. The Dons were able to sneak into half time 3 points behind, due to Fremantle's woeful kicking.
Not much happened for the Dons after half time. Hird was injured in a sickening clash with Mark McVeighs knee and he was taken off the field bloody faced and suffered a fractured eye socket. He will undergo surgery tomorrow and is expected to miss 8 weeks. Fremantle came out more aggressive got the ball with ease and took it straight forward. It showed on the score board as well as they hammered through 4 big ones, to the Dons 2. Not any positive came out of this quarter. Mark McVeigh displayed some poor decision making and basically gave Fremantle a goal after he procrastinated in defence and hand balled to a 2 on 1 contest in the forward pocket. In fact, 1 would not be surprised if they raffled Marks jumper next week at half time, he was that bad.
The fourth quarter was much the same as the third. Horrible. Steven Alessio produced glimpses of his finals form in 2001 and kicked a great goal to cut the margin back. Yet the Dockers remained far more committed and converted rendering the big mans solo efforts useless. Young ruckman David Hille was moved forward for the final quarter as Matthew Lloyd went into hiding and only managed 1 goal all game. Dean 'Turtle' Rioli used his mammoth girth well and managed to shepard 3 players at one stage in the centre. He also tried very hard chasing and tackling, to bad though he didn't get much, if any of the ball. Fremantle decided to rub salt into the wounds and after the final siren Trent 'I'm an Athlete' Croad kicked his second for the match.
Hopefully this 2 game losing streak is ended next week when the Dons face Carlton on Friday night at the G. It will be a long and interesting night at the selection table on Thursday night.
