How can Howard even talk about price relief for fuel. It's a finite resource, as it gets more scarce of course the price will rise.

It's like trying to get a ticket to a sold out show, of course it's going to cost more to get in.

Petrol excise is a flat 38c per litre plus GST, so with petrol prices about $1.20, taxes account for only about a third of the total price. The Government cut the excise from 52c.

Economists say petrol prices are too low.

According to figures from the International Energy Agency, in the December quarter Australia had the fourth-lowest petrol prices out of 29 members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

The tax on petrol in Australia is less than half that charged in Britain, Germany and France, though more than in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Will he actually do something ? after ten years ?

Or is it just today's diversion ?

How about he relaxes TAXES on fuel?

Don't you love petrol price whingers?

At least some here get it:

What do you want?

Price fixing?

CIA backed coup in Iran?

Nationalise all petrol stations?

fix what ? the global oil price ??? yes come on John get off your arse !!!

The ALP had a petition in the NT to demand investigations into petrol pricing (fixing) before the 2001 NT election. They won and the petition mysteriously disappeared.

Moral of the story is, the parties don't give a crap and won't change the status quo.

It would be very interesting to see how much the Oil cartels give to the Rodents Liberal Party funds!

exactly right

who knows how much petrol/oil is left? In 10 years we could be paying $5/L

prices will only go up not down from now on whether due to scarcity, war/terrorism etc

or from natural disasters, increased by global warming which is due to increasing use of oil and other fossil fuels. If anything, petrol will go up because the people will demand it goes up as a way to reverse/stop/reduce the effects of global warming. Funny how 92% of Australians think GW is a big issue but >8% worried be complaining if petrol goes up 5c let alone doubles as a method of saving the climate.

Surely higher petrol prices means people using cars/machinery will be less likely to use them.

I wonder if some of the people who moan about global warming and polution are the same people who whinge about petrol being so expensive.

Agreed, higher petrol prices should mean that people start to change their vehicle purchasing; hopefully for smaller more fuel efficent cars.

The real answer to high petrol prices is a move to LNG as the fuel of the future. Less reliance on foreign oil if we move towards LNG; just need national leadership on the issue.

Good call on the printer ink.

What the hell do they put in the stuff. It's seems dearer by the ounce than platinum.

And reusable razors!!

Precisely. I'd even go so far as to advocate an increase in the fuel excise (but only at urban petrol stations), with the additional earnings to go to the states to spend on public transport. I'd love to find a way to take it out of the oil company profits, but that won't happen.
