The bye before the finals has pretty much turned the series into an NFL style setup now because the advantage of being top 4 has been taken away. Doesn't matter what you did during the season and top 4 is irrelevant, if you've got a good enough team playing well at the right time of the year you're a chance.

I'm not saying any team can win it you obviously have to have enough talent but before last year if it took you a while to get going you were done. Not the case anymore.

the extra week off has been an issue the WAFL faced over here when they went the 5 team finals series. it meant the first place side had the 1st week off. 2nd vs 3rd, 4th vs 5th. loser of 2nd vs 3rd played the winner of 4th vs 5th, whilst the winner of 2nd vs 3rd played the 1st placed side in week 2. if the 1st placed side wins that they then get the next week off before they play in the grand final. so the big issue was that you get something like this as the 1st placed side:
bye
1st vs 2nd
bye
grand final

so you effectively get 2 games of football in a month. they always came out sloppy and they had a big issue with the 1st placed side getting rolled pretty bad in the grand final, so they canned it because the 1st placed side was too disadvantaged.

it got to the point where some coaches openly admitted to throwing the 1st vs 2nd game (i.e. the first final), so they could get that extra week of football in before the grand final

i can start to see some of that strategy coming in now with the bye before finals, especially if we keep seeing sides get rolled like last year

Where was this noted/quoted?

Haydn Bunton Jnr during the 80s. Might be hard to find that quote now but he said he didn't like the players having the week off

I know the SANFL have a final 5 as well, it would be interesting to see the stats as to if the GF winner played the prelim final or not.

My initial thought is that the only way to win a GF, is to be in a GF, so 'losing' any week in the finals is fraught with danger.

done a quick check for the last handful

2016: Subi two weeks off plus a bye, lose grand final against a side that played all games
1994 (last year before it was canned): Claremont two weeks off, lose grand final against a side that played all games
1993: West Perth two weeks off, lose grand final against a side that played all games
1992: East Fremantle lose the first final after the week off, get a string of games and win the grand final
1991: Claremont two weeks off, win the grand final

so the trend is that you finish higher and cop the two weeks off, you lose.

the big issue with the new AFL fixture is this if you finish say 1st:
Week 1: bye
Week 2: Semi win
Week 3: week off
Week 4: Prelim

two games of football in a month is less than ideal i reckon. i think it shakes up the top 4 advantage quite a bit which will flow onto the grand final
