So.........

Give old Liz the flick

Bugger having a GG getting paid to piss fart around

Call Scomo President

What else changes in day to day life aside from the fact that you might only hope that the UK will aid us if we ever come under some sort of attack rather than know they have to have our backs

... good thing education would teach that already happened by 1986
Are we really free of it?
Our money, our flag?
Have we cut all ties, do we have full autonomy?
Would this thread even need to exist

I

Its a good idea in theory (the more learning the merrier) but I guess I’m just not seeing any real benefit of having a mandatory democracy elective in high school. Engaging them earlier in primary school is useful.
Just make people to pass a basic civics test before they're given their franchise. If we force new citizens to pass a test to acknowledge that they're au fait with our way of life and it's institutions then it's not unreasonable that people who elect our representatives demonstrate a similair sort of understanding.

The Commonwealth of Australia is already independent of the UK. There is only an obligation to assist each other if there are binding agreements in place.

We do have full autonomy and have progressively more from 1931 all the way to 1986.

A license to vote?

I like the idea of a civics test, but it’s a bit like only giving the employed or people who can understand english the vote. Mandatory at least affords everyone a vote, no matter where they are in life, a right worth protecting.

Creating a line to declare the opinions of everyone below unworthy of inclusion in our system is very dangerous.

It can very quickly change to;
Only those who graduated school.
Only those who own land.
Only those who earn above a certain figure.

Exactly my thoughts. It’s a right that requires protection given that slippery potential

Exactly without the idiot vote there isnt enough rich people to ever get the LNP elected

Sure, plenty of activities require you to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding before you're permitted to do it.

We could run courses like they do for the citizenship exams, the point is to help people's understanding of the sysyem, not prevent them from voting. It could have a very beneficial effect on that state of democracy in this country, it's not like a criticial review of Das Kapital is required, just questions about passages of bills, MPs in the upper and lower house, stuff that anyone who votes should know.

That's one of the more stupid things I've read, if the LNP was all about rich people voting for them it's in their interest to make as many people rich as possible.

They don't have to do sh*t

So long as we are part of the monarchy there will be a moral responsibility to support us in times of need as we would do back to them because we're weak

As a legal entity, the Queen of Australia and the Queen of the UK can be two different people they just happen to be the same person at the moment.

Making people stupid is easier, less to share easier to **** over the turkeys who voted for Xmas

Umm ok

That'd make for a very readable news article

Entertaining, but not really a valid point to make basically anywhere on earth.

There goes half the numpties sitting on the SRP all day!

Disenfranchising the poor and uneducated, never knew you had so much in common with US Republicans

Yes, the Republicans are good at spinning their voter registration laws too

Franchise is a natural right of any and every mentally competent adult in a democracy, it’s not something you or anyone else has a right to set limits on

if that’s a premise you don’t subscribe to then there’s really nothing to talk about

Because she holds no political allegiances in this country.

She also doesn't live in this country. If for some reason she decided to become a member of the LNP or ALP then what?

If she is a figurehead that has no meaningful role in Australian politics, then what does it matter if she is replaced with someone else?

If she does have a meaningful role to fulfill, then a near 100 year old woman on the other side of the globe isn't the ideal candidate.

From Malificepedia:

Constitutional parliamentary monarchy: Head of state is ceremonial; ministry is subject to parliamentary confidence
Parliamentary republic with a ceremonial presidency: Head of state is ceremonial; ministry is subject to parliamentary confidence
