RYAN Griffen, an avid Crows supporter and Andrew McLeod fan, is the player Adelaide covets as it looks to rebuild its ageing midfield.
But with three AFL clubs almost certain to be handed precious priority draft picks, the Crows concede they face an uphill battle to get their hands on the gifted on-baller.
"Our concern is that we might not be close enough to the front to get him," Adelaide recruiting manager James Fantasia said.
Adelaide (six wins, 14 losses) has the fourth-worst record in the competition this year.
But the bottom three sides – Hawthorn (three wins), the Western Bulldogs (four) and Richmond (four) – have won less than five games, meaning they are in line for priority draft selections.
Under AFL rules, 20 premiership points or less entitles a club to a priority draft pick.
Currently sitting 13th and unlikely to catch 12th-placed Carlton, Adelaide is in line for the fourth pick at the draft. But unless the Dogs or Tigers win two more games, which is unlikely, Adelaide's first pick would slip all the way to No. 7.
Griffen will be gone by then.
"It's very frustrating, enormously frustrating because without the priority picks we would have been a chance (to get him)," Fantasia said.
"I know to the general public a priority pick doesn't sound like a great deal but it's like playing a game of poker and having eight aces in your deck.
"It's a huge advantage and I suppose we've just got to cop it."
It is not a good year to have a mid-range draft pick. Not only are three clubs likely to have priority selections, meaning they hold the rights to the first six picks, but the three available players under the father-son rule are all guns.
Jessie Smith (Kangaroos), Mitch Morton (West Coast) and Travis Cloke (Collingwood) all would have been taken in the top 10 if they were available, adding to the Crows' frustration.
Adelaide's best – and perhaps only – hope of getting Griffen would be to trade up for him. But clubs cannot trade priority selections, meaning even if the Crows did trade up, they would not get a pick before No. 4.
"We will consider trading up, as you always do, but it's tough to do" Fantasia said.
"To get into that top group we're talking about giving away some super quality from your list – and you don't really want to do that."
Griffen's rivals to be the first player drafted include Victorian midfielder Brett Deledio, WA key position player Lance Franklin and Northern Territory on-baller/forward Richard Tambling.
Finals-bound Port Adelaide also fancies Griffen. Its best hope of getting him to Alberton is in a blockbuster, multi-club trade which will only occur if centreman Josh Carr decides he wants to return home to WA or the club is prepared to give away another high-profile player.
