Its time to bite the bullet and trade up in the draft. We need to get this kid. I have said before that both AFC and PAFC rate him immensly. Time to bite the bullet Crows and trade up in the draft. Do what ever is necessarry to get this kid

The man the Crows want but probably can't have

RYAN Griffen, an avid Crows supporter and Andrew McLeod fan, is the player Adelaide covets as it looks to rebuild its ageing midfield.

But with three AFL clubs almost certain to be handed precious priority draft picks, the Crows concede they face an uphill battle to get their hands on the gifted on-baller.
"Our concern is that we might not be close enough to the front to get him," Adelaide recruiting manager James Fantasia said.

Adelaide (six wins, 14 losses) has the fourth-worst record in the competition this year.

But the bottom three sides – Hawthorn (three wins), the Western Bulldogs (four) and Richmond (four) – have won less than five games, meaning they are in line for priority draft selections.

Under AFL rules, 20 premiership points or less entitles a club to a priority draft pick.

Currently sitting 13th and unlikely to catch 12th-placed Carlton, Adelaide is in line for the fourth pick at the draft. But unless the Dogs or Tigers win two more games, which is unlikely, Adelaide's first pick would slip all the way to No. 7.

Griffen will be gone by then.

"It's very frustrating, enormously frustrating because without the priority picks we would have been a chance (to get him)," Fantasia said.

"I know to the general public a priority pick doesn't sound like a great deal but it's like playing a game of poker and having eight aces in your deck.

"It's a huge advantage and I suppose we've just got to cop it."

It is not a good year to have a mid-range draft pick. Not only are three clubs likely to have priority selections, meaning they hold the rights to the first six picks, but the three available players under the father-son rule are all guns.

Jessie Smith (Kangaroos), Mitch Morton (West Coast) and Travis Cloke (Collingwood) all would have been taken in the top 10 if they were available, adding to the Crows' frustration.

Adelaide's best – and perhaps only – hope of getting Griffen would be to trade up for him. But clubs cannot trade priority selections, meaning even if the Crows did trade up, they would not get a pick before No. 4.

"We will consider trading up, as you always do, but it's tough to do" Fantasia said.

"To get into that top group we're talking about giving away some super quality from your list – and you don't really want to do that."

Griffen's rivals to be the first player drafted include Victorian midfielder Brett Deledio, WA key position player Lance Franklin and Northern Territory on-baller/forward Richard Tambling.

Finals-bound Port Adelaide also fancies Griffen. Its best hope of getting him to Alberton is in a blockbuster, multi-club trade which will only occur if centreman Josh Carr decides he wants to return home to WA or the club is prepared to give away another high-profile player.

Thoughts??????

It's a shame that Griffen will - more than likely - be out of our reach. From what I've heard (and from the above article) he'll go top 3, which means Dogs, Hawks or Tigers.

Oh well, he won't be the first or last top SA kid to escape our clutches(Cooney, Waters, Butler, Schulz, Schammer, Faulkner, etc, etc). That's the draft, it's the same for everyone.

I've said before that the Crows need to have another couple of picks in the top-25. Looks like we'll have 7 & 23. Hopefully we'll get WC's or Freo's 1st round pick for Stenglein and then maybe jag another with a player package to one of the Vic clubs.

I sincerely doubt that we'll be able to manouvre our way into picks 4-6. Be nice, though.

Huh?

Hawthorn traded for Freo's priority pick in 2001 to get Luke Hodge.

Have they changed the rules since then?

Trading up in the draft is an expensive excerise. What exactly is our currency to for a higher pick? McLeod??

My advice: tank to Richmond, and hope they beat the Hawks the following week.

That'll leave us with pick 5 or 6.

Maybe this will be the year that priority picks are discredited once and for all. It's a joke that the 13th placed team gets pick 7 in the draft. And I'm not just saying that because it's the Crows.

Depending on their coach, Western Bulldogs could be the best team to attempt to trade with.

They, more than any other, need quick success. They drafted two highly rated young kids last year. Both should be good in the long run, but have done little to help them in the short term. They will also use their priority on a young player. That's three very highly rated young players to lead them into the future. They may be tempted to part with their second pick this year just to add a bit of immediate quality. But it does depend on the new coach.

I am pretty sure you can because as you pointed out Hawks did it to get Hodge. Unless the rule has changed but I doubt that would escape me;):p

But if you say they will use their priority pick for another youngster then what difference would it make if we traded for WB's 1st round pick because its likely to be pick 6.

Personally, I would be trying to give our pick 7 and a good player to go up in the draft high enough to get Griffen. I think we really need to be in the top 3 to have any sort of chance.

I am guessing that Hawks and Tigers would go for Dedelio, Franklin or Tambling. If we could trade with WB for their 3rd pick then we would be in with a decent shot. Even if we do miss out on Griffen we could still get one of the 3 I mentioned.

Please AFC trade up in the draft :):(

More likely pick 5. But I was going by the reports that said priority picks couldn't be traded. And I was thinking keep 7 and get another one higher giving us two in the top 7, which is probably unrealistic.

Yeah, that could work. More likely than my initial idea.

Still reckon the Bulldogs would be the team most likely to consider something like this, and they'll most probably have pick 2.

I really like you idea of getting 2 picks inside the top 7 but I think its very unlikely to happen. We wold have to trade a gun and then some more and I don't think we will do that. I think its doable BUT unlikely.

The reason I suggested going with pick 7 and a player is because sides that have early pick are rebuidling and would still like to have a decent pick. I agree that Bulldogs are a best team to go with and say pick 7 and a player for their pick 3 is more realistic that trading player for pick 3.

So if we have pick 3 and say we get something like pick 15 for Stenglein and still keep out pick 23 we would be pretty well off.

If we could do that with Burton + #7 for #3 I'd definitely do it.

I just don't want to trade any of our young guys like Reilly, Hentschel etc, to get another kid. It just wouldn't be worth it.

I think that is our best shot, and the Bulldogs the best club to deal with.
Still would go Burton, and pick 7 for pick 3?
