Johnson to miss Saints clash

There’s a bonus for St Kilda and a setback for Essendon with the withdrawal of Bombers’ midfielder Jason Johnson from Saturday night’s match at Telstra Dome with a corked hamstring.

Speaking at a special media conference at Telstra Dome with St Kilda coach Grant Thomas, Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy confirmed that Johnson had aggravated an injury that he picked-up against Port Adelaide last Sunday.

“He got a knee in the back of his thigh last week that really slowed him up and it’s just unfortunate that he just strained it a bit this morning,” Sheedy said.

“Jason’s form hadn’t been great and he was really looking forward to this match to really play well so it’s a bit of bad luck. Rather than take a risk, we’re leaving him out.”

Sheedy described the injury as a ‘corky’ which may sideline Johnson for one or two weeks, but he conceded that Johnson could be out for longer if scans confirm a tear.

Thomas, meanwhile said he believed the Saints’ strong win over the Bombers in their Wizard Home Loans Cup semi-final just a month ago would count for little on Saturday.

“The pre-season competition is a great competition to prepare sides, so it has no real line to be drawn when you get to in-season because people try different things and players are at different stages,” Thomas said.

“The important thing is the grand final of the Wizard Cup… but on the way through I think too many sides are compromising too many in-season standards and trying different things.

“We beat Essendon last year in a practice game at Optus Oval but we got smashed during the season,” he noted.

Sheedy said he would be looking for his ruck combination of Matthew Allan and David Hille to provide the Bombers with first use of the ball, though he played down some of the hype regarding the return of a host of experienced Bombers from injury and suspension, noting that many of the Saints’ veterans are in career-best form.

“Both sides are quite balanced in terms of experience and youth. Probably at the moment you’d have to say St Kilda’s younger players are better than ours,” Sheedy said.

“But their experienced players are playing up to their best. I’m talking about Thompson coming off the bench, Powell, Robert Harvey in the Wizard Cup grand final was sensational. Aussie Jones and Gehrig – they’re playing very well.”

Quinn is a joke.

When half your side comes down with soft tissue injuries prior to Round 1, you aren't doing your job properly.

Isn't it pretty much the sole responsibility of a fitness trainer to get as much of the playing list as possible healthy in time for the first game?

Now JJ does a hammy.

Very bad form.
