Bottom line is you dont rest on your laurels if you can improve your list - you do as the Hawks did.

Really?
I have two issues with those posts.
1. That the game was lost because of lack of composure. The game was lost for similar reasons Fremantle has lost games despite fielding close to their best 22 over the past few years - breaking down across half forward. A key defender taking intercept marks had a field day against Fremantle in the GF. I would not call this composure, I would call that a structural deficiency.
2. That a combination of "Keplar, Griffin, Clarke, Sandilands, Hanath, Tabener, Mora (maybe)" is a workable solution. Three of those are coming off knee recos. Those without serious injury, three are ruckmen that have never shown themselves capable at kicking goals. The last of that lot is a rookie listed key forward. I would like him to come good - I would also like some insurance in case he doesn't. IMO Podsiadly in 2014 is better than all of those options.
It's not simply about scrambling enough wins to make top four - Fremantle did that this year. It's about having a team good enough to win on grand final day. The deficiencies are fairly obvious if you reflect on all the games Fremantle lost in 2013. They were highlighted in the GF. Don't rectify them = struggle to win it next year.

FORWARDS James Podsiadly and Scott Gumbleton are both in the frame to join Fremantle, says football manager Chris Bond.
Speaking on AFL.com.au's Gillette Trade Radio, Bond said the Dockers were acutely aware they had to address their lack of quality talls, and both players were firmly in their sights.
Bond said Fremantle had not ruled out trading for both key forwards.
JPod is not the full answer. But I am sick of our endless kicks high into the forward 50 to be intercepted by the opposition tall. Yes, Mayne and Walters take spectacular marks from these now and then, but these inside 50s are generally wasted.
JPod will fill a gap while we search for an answer. He may also mentor and guide our young forwards to take over eventually.
Its too late if we want to pick and groom a long term KPF from the draft now. Unless we are not interested in Pavilich, McPharlin and Sandilands winning a flag.

The lack of composure comment was in relation to the handful of set shots missed by our team.
If we had not missed those shots it wouldn't have mattered that Lake was mopping everything up across our half forward line. Fyfe was 12.1 then kicked two out on the full. At least two more shanks from pressure followed. We lost by 15 points. That third quarter burst should have put us 30 points up going into the fourth.
It IS lack of composure when your gun forwards miss repeated simple shots at goal at crucial times. Count the number of outright shanks from Fyfe, Mayne, Ballantyne, Pavlich, Walters, Pearce and WE LOST BY 15 POINTS.
I'm just glad he further confirmed Fyfe was staying putPods, Gumby and Ellis in the one interview, Bond is having a lend

As I said before, did Hawthorn look at 2012 and decide that they only lost because of lack of composure? They kicked themselves out of the 2012 premiership far more than Fremantle did in 2013.
Or did they look at the flaws they had in their best 22 and decide to rectify them? The gulf between Fremantle and the premier is large enough to suggest that more changes are needed.
There are obvious flaws in Fremantle's best 22. Adding composure does not win the 2014 premiership.
I agree with what you are saying, we need to be bold and changes are needed.
But part of the gap will close because Hawthorn are coming back the other way, lost three of their GF team already.
Others will rise though. Sydney for one.
Ultimately any decision rests on two things: Is the core of the side strong enough to go deep in finals? And, is the side covered for all game day eventualities in a grand final?
Definite yes to the first. The second so far is a no. Two weaknesses - goal kicking mid (Sylvia) and key position player.

But nothing was said about Sam ReidI'm just glad he further confirmed Fyfe was staying put![]()
