I've been hating on his overhead marking this year. It was never his strong suit, but he's really let us down at key times in games with an inability to clunk what should be an easy mark, even under pressure, as it is generally from a much smaller defender.

God those last few pages were difficult to read... The only sensible posts in this thread seem to be from interstate supporters.

The kid's been pretty quiet of late, personally I'm not sold on him playing in the midfield, much like this obsession of assuming that LeCras can play in the middle as well.

Yeah but he wasnt exactly setting the world on fire at the start of his career (millenium match notwithstanding). Neither was one Josh Kennedy or many (if not nost) key forward types.

It takes the key forwards longer generally. Getting the strength to compete with men rather than boys.

I can name just as many key forwards who do great at the start of their careers than blossom later.

Matthew Lloyd, Lance Franklin, Nick Riewoldt, Jonathan Brown, Matthew Richardson, Barry Hall, Jarryd Roughead, Jack Gunston, Chris Tarrant, Saverio Rocca, Alastair Lynch, Jeremy Cameron etc. All these players had super early years.

It is a myth that KPFs need to wait till they are 24/25 to hit on and start performing. Heaps of quality key forwards show consistency and quality when they are 20-22. Jack Darling is in this category, he is just having a form slump. He has the worst midfield in the competition delivering it to him which doesn't help.

Good comeback mate ;) Lol
Maybe Fyfe for Darling, LeCras and a handful of draft picks :)
Seriously though....I watch a lot of WCE games and I think he generally is a quality player...His off the ball work is great...lots of run and tackle. Will develop more as he ages....

Fyfe is out of contract and Darling isn't. We wouldn't be adding anything to the deal.

Have Freo even kicked 80 in a season? Ross Lyon doesn't like scoring #mastercoach #pffftt

We've still scored more than half the teams in the comp, and that's after playing each of the top 11 teams and only 1 of the bottom 7 so far.

Well why would we?

Out of contract. There is no steak knives.

Any point discussing something that will never happen?

Agree that there is no point in discussing it. I would love Darling in our team, but on his current form I wouldn't be trading Fyfe for him in a straight swap. And out of contract doesn't mean anything. You wouldn't be picking him in the Pre-Season draft or anything.

Yes it does. Why do you think players have contracts?

For average players it does. But the gun players still demand high value at the trade table regardless of their contract situation. Unless a team has the first pick in the Pre-Season draft.

In other words don't hope that your club could get Fyfe in a trade for Brad Shepherd.

It still does matter for good players. Fyfe could nominate us (which he won't because he'll stay at Freo) and we offer Darling in return. Freo ask for more, we say no, Fyfe walks to the PSD. We're going to have a higher pick than Freo, so Freo couldn't select him with their pick. Of course there's a risk another club will take him, but I doubt anyone else will if he says he only wants to play for West Coast. If Fyfe is contracted, West Coast can offer as much as they want but Freo don't have to accept the trade.

None of this will happen, of course, but whether the player is contracted has a big impact.

There are so many other aspects to take into account though. The most important thing is how good clubs are at looking after their players, presenting themselves as a good club to entice players from other teams and being strong at the trade table.

I think he will end up like chad cornes who was better dominating through the middle than with specialist defenders

Wouldve thought Jack would sit pretty comfortably amongst most quality forwards, particularly at his age. Yeah he's having a quieter year infront of the sticks, but he's playing quite a different role this year - can only help to add a few strings to his bow.

Not sure about the midfield idea though - seemed like a good idea, but he definitely does his best work closer to goal.

Reading this thread is quite depressing with how many users sink the boot in. As a few users have said WCE midfield delivery is awful and he is young. Will be a good player long term
