Grimes was taken pick 14 compared to Cotchins pick 2 in the 2007 national draft, grimes has out performed him to date with both having had injury problems.

Who would you take?

Grimes plays an infinitely easier position than Cotchin who has been hampered by injury far more than Jack.

Grimes played 12 games in 2 years due to his back.

Also, Grimes has been rotating between halfback and midfield this year, and will make a full time move into the midfield sometime throughout this year.

I seem to remember a pre-season game this year against Essendons full strength midfield where Grimes played a full game running in the midfield.

From memory he got 32 posessions, 7 clearances and 2 goals.

Going to have to go with Grimes on this one.

50/50, you'd say grimes is a better player at the moment.

cotchin probably is more naturally gifted, so he has more potential to be in the top 10 of the AFL.

grimes is an all round gun though. consistent, tough and makes good decisions.

safe bet: grimes
potential: cotchin

Cotchin is a higher draft pick.....so has more potential and talent!

Grimes can play tall or small. Absolutely killed Didak on the weekend whilst still getting 20 odd effective possessions himself.

Looks like Cotchin, Dangerfield and Grimes will be the three best midfielders out of the draft.

I think both teams will end up very happy with these two players. But based on performances so far in their short careers, I'd have to go with Grimes. Yes, Cotchin has potential to be a better player than Grimes, but I'm basing my decision on what I've seen so far, not what could and possibly will not be. Fair chance both could end up captaining their clubs one day as well. Cotchin may struggle to get to full potential in a side that will spend some time down the bottom of the ladder, while Grimes will be in a team on the rise in the coming years and with good players around him, he should reach full potential. Close call though....

Cotchin is one player I'd love at the Pies, will be a star. I really rate Grimes too, but Cotchin for me.

Interesting statement from a hawk’s supporter. I see Grimes playing a similar role to Luke Hodge.

Further Grimes has been more hampered by injury than Cotchin thus far. He has only just completed his first preseason and has basically played half the number of games Cotchin has.

Based on career averages, they suggest at least to date Grimes wins fairly comfortably with: 2.7 disposals a game more, 3.2 marks and 0.5 tackles. The only major stat Cotchin out points Grimes in is he averages 0.3 goals a game more, but with Grimes moving into the midfield it wont take long for him to snag a few more goals.

Stats aside I see a lot of upside in Cotchin, even with the benefit of hindsight I doubt Richmond supporters would want their footy department to take Grimes over Cotchin.

Grimes by a mile, developing into a solid player for them. Cotchin looks good when he has the ball but doesn't work hard enough and doesn't get enough of the ball except in junk time.

you really havnt seen cotchin play, really have no idea

the last plyer that would be waxing in junk time is cotchin

do yourself a favour dont post comments about a player you have not seen more than 5 times.

For mine both players are safe bets (maybe except for injuries) and I can't believe Grimes was picked so low in the draft. In the limited time I have seen him he just seems a class above the rest. Both players seem to have the whole package (skill, decision making and leadership).

I have seen a lot more of Cotchin though and I think he is an unbelievable talent which is why I would choose him over Grimes.

Scum like that say all our players are junk time specialists.

Still Cotchin, I have faith that he can still become what he was predicted to be when he gets a preseason or two behind him.

Grimes is easily better now though if you dont want to take chances on potential.

hmmm having seen Grimes' work I honestly think he has as much upside as Cotchin.

I don't really see what Cotchin could have that Grimes won't.

Cotchin=Amazing
Grimes=Amazing

I love both of them. Grimes is definatly my fav no richmond player, i went to the Melb V WCE game last year and since then iv loved wacthching young grimesy do his stuff he just reads the play so well and makes smart decisions.
Although one thing cotchin has that grimes doesnt is that he is a natural midfielder, where as grimes reads the play so well that i think hes suited to HB similar to a hodge.

But im bias so Cotchin :)

Like others have said in the thread Grimes is probably ahead at the moment, however both have the potential to be elite. I'm obviously more inclined to go towards Grimes as a Melbourne fan but if Cotchin can stay fit, potential top 5 player in the competition IMO.

It's true that Grimes is a year older though he has been out more with injury and they both seem similarly developed so it's pretty much a non-issue.

Both potential stars from the 2007 draft with high expectations for the next few years. Many expect Grimes to captian the Dees in the future- he actually captained Cotchin in the Northern Knights TAC.

Apparantly we agonized about taking him with pick 4 instead of Morton but, as with other teams, were concerned by his injury. Couldn't believe it when he dropped to 14 though.

Grimes has done more and been more consistant to date so very hard to go past him as a Dees supprter.
