Nobody is Wayne Carey. Brown is in the top handful of players in the league at contested marking based on the last 12-18 months.

Brown's dukes are extremely strong and his arm length enormous - but his core body strength is not - hence he can get pushed under the ball by the stronger defenders like Grundy.

Brown - like all forwards - will benefit from better delivery than what he has been getting.

Blame the coach.

He should be playing deep forward, and/or a quarterback Goddard type role.

I did mention centre clearance for a reason. The only actual clearance work he should be doing is centre clearance work, where the opposition can't swamp him with numbers like they do at the stoppages.
Don’t worry, I blame the coach for pretty much every short coming of our club!

There have been plenty of times when Jack has had runners on the outside of him at center clearances but he chooses to hack it out of the rough.

We must be watching different Ben Browns.
Yeah, never mind that BBB kicked more goals from contested marks or contested marking frees than anyone else in the league this year, he’s not that great a contested mark and needs them out on the lead.

I agree with the sentiments of this thread.

But mods, can we please have a comma in the thread title?

But Arden, there is a comma. It appears the lack of comma is all in your mind.

I get where Taz is coming from. Hitting a pack at pace or marking on the lead with a defender trying to spoil is still a contested marking situation, and Brown is very good at this. Where Brown isn't as good is in the one on one wrestling marks, where both players are stationary. Thing is, these marks are more difficult with loose defenders (and defenders peeling off their direct opponents) coming over the top to spoil.

They're almost a dying breed anyway (those types of marks) except for where a player can get a mismatch one out (a la JZ, Dusty etc). The game has mostly moved on from that type of mark as a general forwards bread and butter because of the numbers game of defending and one over the top.

agree. You see them when its a quick short kick from a contest but any long, high kick allows defenders time to cover. Its why its important for Jack to be more selective in his hacking it forward. If he can kick to space and allow Brown (Or W8) a good run at it then we stand a better chance. Thankfully we've had a coach that for 8 years has instructed his players to bomb it long to contests where we are out numbered, so it shouldn't take too much to fix.

There is a difference between a contested mark when you are out on the lead and one where you are standing still and have to stand up to people crashing into you. The rainmakers result in forwards having to stand under the ball more often than not. It isn't a criticism of Brown, just the delivery to him. Most players are not good contested mark players, it is why the successful clubs have devised game plans that focus on retaining the ball and relying more on uncontested marking.

My opinion is that Jack should be a deep forward and BBB should lead to the ball carrier. Either way defenders will crap themselves.

We have Garner, Wood, Waite & co to be HFs.
Yep.
Simpson and Turner at their feet and we can't go wrong!

It might finally happen, after we picked up two bull midfielders tonight.

This thread is exactly what I thought of after the draft. LDU is a proper, complete mid. Ahern does what we hope and this happens. :thumbsu:

Seems like you're still waiting for that...and what funny I see Twinkletoes liking the post.
