Just wanted to give a shoutout to Thurls - this was months ago, but I don't think I ever mentioned it on here - Turbocat 's avatar just reminded me.

There's a boy about 18-19 in the cheersquad who comes with his Mum to every game - don't know anything about the situation so I shouldn't really comment, but he quite clearly has some form of disability.

Anyway, after Thurlow was drafted, this kid bought the very first Jackson Thurlow badge from the Cats shop. He goes to every VFL game, and Thurls was always really nice to him at every VFL game, had long chats with him whenever he saw him there, and was apparently rapt when he saw that the kid was wearing his badge.

Before his debut, Jackson came over to the fence during the warm up and had a really good chat with him as he does at the VFL games (which is when I gathered the above), talked about how excited he was, etc. I thought it was really nice of him to show a genuine interest in somebody who was, quite clearly, his biggest fan.

We won the match - I can't remember who against - and after the game, all of the players collected those mini footballs from a bag, signed them, and ran off in all directions to hand them out to kids. Now - when this happens, the players never come to the cheer squad. When Thurlow grabbed his footy - 150 metres away at the other end of the ground - he jogged in a straight line directly to the cheersquad to find his biggest fan, gave him the footy, ruffled his hair, and then ran down the race with the rest of the boys.

Really nice moment. Good on you, Thurls. :thumbsu:
I know this was put up a while ago, but what a legend. I am really keen for Thurlow to be in the side Round 1, especially if Cam Guthrie moves into the midfield.
Thurlow is so composed and poised, definitely has a touch of class, and doesn't at all seem overawed during games. Much like Guthrie he does everything quite well, and shows flashes of genuine brilliance.

Massive fan of this kid... 15+ games this year?

Cats website now has him listed at 83kg, previously, he was listed at 79kg.
Rule of thumb for me is the last two digits in the height should be around equal to the players weight for peak performance 3rd or 4th year ie Menzel 188/89 Duncan 188/87 Caddy 186/88, these players will all finish around 6 kgs above their red height figure Ideal hard football bodies,Mackie is the exception at the Cats and some Indigenous players also don't conform if that's the right word.
So I guess I'm saying Thurlow could still use another 6 or 7kgs one more year away, so next year could be his break out year.Any games he gets this year will be gold and a bonus.

That's a fair increase.

Some suggest he may still need a few kgs given his height to compete at senior level - but there are always exceptions. Would like to know what weight Selwood was in his first year and he played in the seniors at a good standard. I assume he has added a few kgs of muscle since.

Thurlow looks a really good proposition and has played against men in Tassie - so he may yet play a few games this season. But I agree his big year will most likely be 2015.

remarkable reading back on some of those early posts 2006, who would have thought he would become the player he is today. One of the posters said something about his lack of pace but he makes up for it in spades with pure footballing ability....so true!

I never saw those early posts, but to me he was obviously a class footballer from the moment he stepped on the ground the first time.

honestly, I don't remember him that much in 2007, guess I was too busy enjoying what Bartel, Ablett and co were producing. If you can remember, those guys were sort at a similar stage to where Duncan, Bundy etc were at today...wasn't sure how high their ceiling would be but wow! They sure went crazy in the years to follow.
Just all clicked didn't it?
The whole team became a beast.
It did it grew and fed on its self belief.

Not in total agreement with the last but excellent post

Thanks - so he came in with reasonable weight (82 kgs) and is now 5 kgs heavier.

I think that Thurlow will add weight but is close enough to have enough strength to play HBF or BP. Hope he gets a few senior games this season as of all the ND picks he looks a very likely type to me.

I just do not know where he fits into the team with Guthrie, Rivers, Lonergan, Mackie, Harry and Enright down back already.

If Rivers does play then maybe we can release Mackie to the wing - but then again he has had two really fab seasons of late.

Could Thurlow play wing ??? Not sure. But he does need games in the seniors as he will be in the side when Enright goes - which is likely to be next season.

I think that he has the skills to play forward, defense or wing. It is going to be about form and winning a position in the first 22.
