Hendo was the poster child for overusing the handball. One of the interesting things at last nights game was watching Jaensch and Hendo work together in coordinating who was going to be the loose/attacking option at various stages of the game. It seemed like Jaensch was the one doing the instructing too which I found interesting. A number have already said it, but his defensive game especially in winning 1-1 marking contests was great last night.
Including a very important spoil against the pies where he left his opponent to spoil a pies player who got loose on the boundary.Had a ripping season. Top 10 bnf you'd think.
Contested making and spoiling come on in spades.
Dasher has really helped him I think.
Can teach someone to spoil and develop confidence defensively.Including a very important spoil against the pies where he left his opponent to spoil a pies player who got loose on the boundary.
Always had footy talent but has actually knuckled down & worked massively on his previous defensive deficiencies.
Proved me wrong as thought he was one of the favourites to be delisted at the end if the season.
Great to see Jaensch making it. Well deserved toast, and another Rookie draft success.
All drafted under Neil Craig I think.Jaensch, Brodie Martin, maybe Wright
Is Sando a genius?
Yeah but they weren't any good back then. All drafted under Neil Craig I think.

That's his point - none of them looks like players under Craig's tenure. Admittedly with Wright it was mostly injuries that prevented him from getting a go, but there's no doubt that all three look like markedly better players now than they did back then.
Of course, maturing (both physically and mentally) has probably played a big part in Jaensch and Martin looking like best 22 players. Although I'm still not quite sold on Martin.

What more does Martin need to do to sell you?

judging by his social media he did some soul searching.Far cry from the Jaensch I saw against Sydney many years ago. No defensive effort and was motionless standing the mark. A real waste of defensive space.
I'm not sure who has been responsible for this but they deserve a pay rise.
I remember having a big hissy fit last year about Jaensch not being an AFL standard player and the sooner we got rid of him the better, wah wah wah wah wah etc etc.
He's had a good year, but IMO competitively he came of age on Sunday when he consistently beat his direct opponent in 1 on 1 situations, which is exactly what you want from a defender. Add to that his run and immaculate ball skills either by hand or foot, and he's currently a real asset to the team, along with his like mates back there in Smith and Henderson.
Hopefully he'll use this year as a launching pad to go onto bigger and even better things in future years.
He just needs to nail his opportunities when they arise. I like Martin, he's got really good spirit for the contest and always tries his guts out. On the weekend I thought he had a very nice game. But all too often he misses crucial opportunities to score goals, or hit targets, or whatever.
Of course he's not alone on that front, but that's his whole game. He's effectively an opportunist midfielder, he creates opportunities by working hard. If he can't finish off a good percentage of them, his value is low.
If he continues to turn in performances like the one on the weekend I'll believe in him as a best 22 midfielder. For now, the jury is still out for me.
It also doesn't help that we have plenty of people who could play his role. We don't actually have many at all suited to playing Jaensch's role.
