Watched the replay tonight - fantastic work. He was solid as a rock - something you would never had said about him until a couple of rounds ago. Glad to see his hitting his stride. Bonus, it's a player we don't have to replace, something I thought we'd have to do after last year.

One of the interesting things at last nights game was watching Jaensch and Hendo work together in coordinating who was going to be the loose/attacking option at various stages of the game. It seemed like Jaensch was the one doing the instructing too which I found interesting. A number have already said it, but his defensive game especially in winning 1-1 marking contests was great last night.

Hendo was the poster child for overusing the handball.

Kick it like the mule son!

Had a ripping season. Top 10 bnf you'd think.
Contested making and spoiling come on in spades.
Dasher has really helped him I think.
Including a very important spoil against the pies where he left his opponent to spoil a pies player who got loose on the boundary.

Always had footy talent but has actually knuckled down & worked massively on his previous defensive deficiencies.

Proved me wrong as thought he was one of the favourites to be delisted at the end if the season.

Can teach someone to spoil and develop confidence defensively.
Can't teach someone to kick like he can.

Great to see Jaensch making it. Well deserved toast, and another Rookie draft success.

I think i read somewhere he was looking like a mid to top draft prospect but went on a bit of a bender during draft camp (or it might have been the under 18 carnival), which forced him to do it the hard way.

He reminds me of what Port want out of Pittard... with less brain farts.

All drafted under Neil Craig I think.

That's his point - none of them looks like players under Craig's tenure. Admittedly with Wright it was mostly injuries that prevented him from getting a go, but there's no doubt that all three look like markedly better players now than they did back then.

Of course, maturing (both physically and mentally) has probably played a big part in Jaensch and Martin looking like best 22 players. Although I'm still not quite sold on Martin.

Must confess, before this year I wasn't a fan of Jaensch, I thought he was too arrogant for a man that was a fringe AFL player. To his credit, he has improved and is really developing into a solid AFL footballer to the point where I'm happy he's on the team.

What more does Martin need to do to sell you?

He just needs to nail his opportunities when they arise. I like Martin, he's got really good spirit for the contest and always tries his guts out. On the weekend I thought he had a very nice game. But all too often he misses crucial opportunities to score goals, or hit targets, or whatever.

Of course he's not alone on that front, but that's his whole game. He's effectively an opportunist midfielder, he creates opportunities by working hard. If he can't finish off a good percentage of them, his value is low.

If he continues to turn in performances like the one on the weekend I'll believe in him as a best 22 midfielder. For now, the jury is still out for me.

It also doesn't help that we have plenty of people who could play his role. We don't actually have many at all suited to playing Jaensch's role.

Far cry from the Jaensch I saw against Sydney many years ago. No defensive effort and was motionless standing the mark. A real waste of defensive space.
I'm not sure who has been responsible for this but they deserve a pay rise.

Well spotted Commander.

I was having a beer with Vader after the match and he was raving on and on about Jaensch, Martin and Luke Thompson. We had quite a long discussion and if it hadn't been for Spackler continually butting in to tell us about how well we were using the loose man in defence, I might have even extracted an admission from Vader that the trio would not be delisted at the end of the season :D.

I also have to put my hand up and admit that I was wrong when I suggested he was NaBA (Not a Backman's arseh*le) although I was always happy trying him further up the field. His one-on-one defence has improved dramatically. He still gets out of position at times when playing the plus one (unlike Brodie Smith who is nearly perfect in this role) but having three players who can play that role (now that Hendo is back) will make us much stronger.

P.S. Part of this post may not be absolutely accurate.

I remember having a big hissy fit last year about Jaensch not being an AFL standard player and the sooner we got rid of him the better, wah wah wah wah wah etc etc.

He's had a good year, but IMO competitively he came of age on Sunday when he consistently beat his direct opponent in 1 on 1 situations, which is exactly what you want from a defender. Add to that his run and immaculate ball skills either by hand or foot, and he's currently a real asset to the team, along with his like mates back there in Smith and Henderson.

Hopefully he'll use this year as a launching pad to go onto bigger and even better things in future years.

judging by his social media he did some soul searching.

Well said. He has also removed the ghastly errors from his game as well. I was also a detractor and I am very happy to have been proved wrong, esp so in the last month of footy.

I agree with that. Works his arse off and does some really nice things but often when under pressure becomes fumbly or makes the wrong decision. An extended run has certainly improvied him. I think Lyons and L Thompson would benefit from the same treatment.
