Do you mind telling us exactly what she did?

She and her partner were living together. They have two kids. They were both claiming sole parent allowances. Her partner got five years.

How much were they ripping from the gov?

No wonder taxes are so high down there, with this double dipping from the public coffers, and then the tax dollars down the drain for the legal proceedings to lock them up.

Not to mention the cost of keeping them locked up, and supporting two parentless kids

They will probably be suspended sentences, or a lenience for the benefit of the children.

I spent a 2 night stint and a 1 night stint in lockup while in Europe, for overstaying my visa, and I can honestly say it is absolutely the most boring thing you could possibly go through in your life. You can handle the lack of freedom no problems, it's just the ******* boredom, it is like torture. I'd imagine it would he a hell of a lot easier if you're in a cell with another person, or have shit you can do in your cell ie read, without those things though, you wouldn't be able to last very long.

You can see why it's been the punishment of choice for so long.

May I ask you which country? I'm in France and seriously considering over my visa limit to stay with my girl. Speaking and doing a little research it appears the French don't really give a shit.

My visa has a month left and we plan to get married. The woman at the local mairie didn't seem to have a problem, just saying I won't be legal or able to work until 6 months after I arrived. But I can get married in that time.

Any advice?

Germany. In the end they were pretty relaxed about it even then, but still, they might lock you up just to do a check on you etc.

If you can, just jump over the boarder and get your passport stamped in another country, say you were staying there for a month or 2. Do it a couple of times if you can.

You're allowed 6 months out of 12, so get ticked off in a couple of other countries and you should be ok. At the end of the day you're going to be telling porky pie, so if you head over to another country, try and remember some of the details of a particular town incase you get quizzed on it (could be worth saying you went to The Nederlands, that way you might be excused if your memory is a little hazy :D).

Or you could always tie the knot, which means you don't have to worry about it, but that's a decision you don't want to jump into for the sake of a visa.

Raskolnikov how much did they falsely claim?

Who do the kids live with now then?

I really don't know the ins and outs of it all but they will be living with my sister.

This is what I was getting at when I asked my question.

It costs ~ $120 K annually to keep a person in a Victorian prison.

They're actually in Queensland but yeah it's probably roughly the same.

I don't know exactly how much but they'd been doing it for a while.

Have had a fair few (ex)mates go to jail.

One thing that's interesting is they come out with the same maturity as what they went in with. (all went in young)

Their experiences differed greatly. Most were just bored. One got put into protective custody after getting a hot kettle poured on him because he ratted on someone. When he got out he was still hated for it and was stabbed by some random prisoner who spotted him by chance.

Protip - Don't rat on people.

Yeah I've had the same thing. A few mates have gone gone gone and to be honest, the ones I've seen that are back in society are worse than they were before they went in.

Lived with a mate who was inside for three years and was a pretty feared guy around the traps before, after, he was mouse. We went out drinking after he had gotten everything over and done with to celebrate and same thing, some random dude spotted him and stabbed him in the guts three times outside the pub for something stupid that happened inside. Had to hold him like a little baby waiting for an ambulance to come for 30 minutes from a hospital that was 5 minutes down the road. He was fine but he was a tripped out guy and I no longer see him.

When I lived with him he bought a pitbull for protection and was obsessed with locks and security.

He went downhill pretty fast, got in with some dudes who sold a lot of crack and was smoking A LOT all day everyday. I'd lock my bedroom door at night because the guy would be running around the house with knives spurring his dog to attack these people who quite simply did not exist. All night he'd be chasing non-existent monsters around the house. If I didn't lock my door he'd burst in and tell me I had to check the front door because there's people knocking on the door trying to take him back to jail. It was nuts.

One weekend I was away for work and he got a whole bunch of our friends over to climb trees and check behind bushes and anything that may harbour these mysterious shadow people because he was convinced people were coming to get him. It got really crazy..

He even had a little piece of paper that he was jotting down the number of times a - white commodore had passed by the house - or a red magna.

I came home from work one day and he'd bought all of these padlocks. He made me lock EVERYTHING that could be locked, convinced that if he did it himself people would see and they'd know how to get in.

The next day I came home from work and he attacked me swinging punches (guy could fight like danny green) and screaming. He was convinced I'd stolen the keys to all the locks and was claiming I was "against" him and that I was apart of the conspiracy.

I had the keys in my bedroom under my pillow. I moved out a few weeks later.

I felt sorry for the dude, he was always a tough nut, but only went in for relatively minor things as a young man, but he came out of it alllllll messed up. Shell of a man.

God damn I've experienced some crazy shit in my short time on Earth

From my research Germany is one of the worst for that in the schengan and France one of the best. I'm happy to marry her. She's stunning, 16 years younger and is French so she cooks like a champion. Plus it was her idea to get married and I didn't leave my life in oz to go with her to the other side of the world just to say goodbye in 3 months.

Better to take the risk than not try at all.

Drugs are bad, mmmkaayy

Why does everyone automatically blame the drugs?

Let me put you in prison, do god knows what, feed you god knows what prescription drugs and then stab you in the guts when you get out, and see how you handle it.

*Don't let me do that, i'm just trying to make a point.

da ****????

how long were you with him?? and if it was any more than a week (which it's safe to say from the story it was), can i ask why??

even if that were one of my best mates there is just no way in the world i could deal with that for any more than about a day.

As someone who has been there and done that themselves mate, I can safely say that taking the risk isn't the hard part, it's dealing with what happens afterward.

But hey, it's your life and I'm sure you know what you're doing and want. Good luck.
