Finally got around to watching it. Surprisingly good. King did well not to get up and break Mikes jaw when he wouldn't let up about Toby Mitchell. King has definitely gone up in my books. Seems like a quality fella.

What else were they supposed to keep talking about how many pushups he can really do?

100 games - couple of qualifying finals but that's it. No awards unless you count the grand final sprint. There was no football interview to be had.

He didn't punch someone so he's quality?

Grouse.

not hypocritcial

no- Toby did what he did due to limited options in life- this is not making excuses- simply explaining why many people brought up in the cycle intergenerational crime/poverty do what they do.

james was given everything a kid could wish for- and lived the dream life- brought up in a life of intergenerational success and comfort.

One had no expectations.

One had a world of expectations.

both have cut corners and worked on the fringes of legality.

one had everything to lose.

one had nothing to lose.

Put in perspective, I would say Toby Mitchell is a better bloke than James Hird

I would say you have very little idea about Toby Mitchell. Plenty of people grow up with limited options, not all of them become psychotic career criminals. Romanticise it if you want but it's complete fantasy. And I am no fan of James Hird either.

Edit "cut corners" is an amusing term for it.

I couldn't care less who Jake King associates with, he is/was a footballer. It was his job to play football. I think he did a reasonable job. We don't necessarily need characters in the game, but football teams need blokes the like Jake King. He is a tough unit, and teammates walk taller with blokes like that around.

To buy into this is to be an apologist for criminals. And not all criminals are violent thugs. I think you give Mitchell far too much understanding for what he has done. There are stories of people who lifted themselves out of lives just as down and dirty as Mitchell's and become social-workers, charity raisers, priests, lawyers, politicians, anything really... If you think Mitchell had no other choices you are essentially saying it became baked into his DNA due to his upbringing. There are others in the same situation who turn out very different.

As an aside: I wonder if Jake King is actually afraid of what would happen if he cut Mitchell off. There is usually an implied threat for anyone who is friends with somebody highly violent.

fair points- yet until you have been in this situation you cannot truly comment.
Not all people who are given everything on a silver platter end up successful.

See you are a conundrum- you barrack for Melbourne (silver spoon?)- yet live in mIll park (let's just say, not silver spoon).

As I said - and clearly reading is something you struggle with- background does not excuse behaviour- yet goes a fair way to explaining it.

cut and paste- reading is key

Do you know what "apologist" actually means? I'll stick by my comments about your post. Just making a perfunctory remark about background not excusing behaviour doesn't change the fact that you really went on to make a very generous and far reaching statement justifying Mitchell's life as the product of a poor upbringing. You sounded like a member of his legal team you sounded so forgiving.

And then after being all neo-liberal with your "do not judge" stuff, you participate in this ludicrous stereotype about Melbourne supporters and silver spoons and then make a glancing insult about the residents of Mill Park. Clearly you know nothing about either group.

I expect you will counter this with a self-congratulatory remark about how you were ingeniously pointing out how you can't judge books by their covers, but honestly, rather than sounding like somebody who thinks about things from a variety of angles you sound more like you think along stereotypes.

I can infer a few things about you from the fact you had to resort to both of these tropes. You are using background to excuse behavior, whether you want to admit it or not. No background excuses his behavior - wonder if you have actually experienced being around those people and what they are really like.

Outside of who he chooses to associate with, what is King actually known for? He was a reasonable footballer in a team that didnt achieve much over his career.

If not for Mitchell he never would have been on the show. And he would have known that Sheehan was going to ask him questions about it.

Could you say that again without that silver spoon jammed right up your arse?

Seriously, you come across as a right w***er.

Hey, I live in MIll Park - it's not possible for me to have a silver spoon. ;)

I know you hated my post, but I enjoyed the simple direct response you gave (in contrast to the Toby Mitchell apologist I was replying to), so I gave you a like.

A bit of barrel scraping here. Why not interview someone more interesting, such as Humphrey B Bear. He may have more of interest to say.

Of all the ex AFL players Mike got Jake in, was there anything really that interesting about a him or was it about setting things straight and correcting some wrongs?

probably..

Surprised me a bit, the way the media pasted King was like an ordinary street thug. Getting a better insight into who the players really are does reinforce the statement: don't judge a book by its cover.

I've got mates who in their own time when they aren't around me do questionable things
I'm still mates with them. I know half the people on here would prefer every AFL identity to answer every question with a smile then promote a social issue and skip off into the sunset carting rainbows

Jake King had a beer with the cheer squad after his final game to say thanks yet you people probably idolize players who wouldn't even fart in the same room as you

Effin Mic drop. Open Mike.... drop...

Anyway. I like the push-up king! Hated him in his playing days but he wasn't THAT much of a player in fairness. But his cult status is good, honestly. And he does seem like a successful type of person in life, with goodness. So good on him :D I think "aplomb" is a generous word for his dancing defense of being Toby's mate. It'd be nice if he had a more clarified stance on it all. It'd give him a better look.
