This discussion is sure going in circles, making me a bit dizzy.

Those who go back to his days at Norwood rightly say he played some games well beyond his years. However it is pretty easy to look good in a side as dominant as his was. Darren Pfeiffer, Jack Trengove, James Battersby, and the Toump did at similar ages and a few more all did the same thing and none of those had brilliant AFL careers.

Those of you who think he is a touch overrated and we only want him because his name is Aish, do we not want promising youngsters at our club ?? He will be a good player, maybe even better and its a chance worth taking.

BUT....... I think our first rounder and one of Wright/Grigg/Hendo or Lyons is more than enough to get him. Anymore and the risk becomes silly.

No but when a talented one wants to come to you therefor giving you a famous surname and leverage in the trade, you take notice
I am yet to hear anything from Aish or his manager that the AFC is his preferred destination, and his name has zero relevance to his football ability.

The following players (from last week's team) would all be behind him in the selection order:
  • CEY
  • CC
  • Wright
  • Henderson
  • Laird
  • Mackay **
  • Kelly
** Mackay would have been behind him before playing a blinder against Melbourne. Probably ahead, temporarily, right now though.
You've got Aish playing pretty much any position on the ground between back-pocket and forward pocket.

There is never for eg a choice between playing Henderson or CC. So what do you see him doing for us, that we currently have a need for?

Fair call and some if the data is assumed not validated.

What's the balance of probabilities though ?

Great marketing and branding opportunity for the club - the family name, the message we are a destination club not a departure lounge.

I've said this before he has succeeded at every level comfortably and his AFL career to date is first class , he's 19 or so. Think back to danger Sloane even hodge and Goddard. They hadn't done anything more at this stage in their careers

Sure but if Bontempelli was South Australian I think you'd have no one arguing about us doing all we can to get him back.

I know Aish has talent, but my question remains, are we just after him for the talent or because he is a missing piece in the AFC Premiership jigsaw? I've been Norwood since 1980. Sitting up to watch Michael Aish win the Magarey medal is one of my earliest footy-related memories, but I don't give a damn where they come from when they play for the Crows.

If we're getting him just to take the position we'd expect Griggs and or Lyons to have, then you'd like to hope the upgrade is going to be worth it, because we'd need to give up more than just Griggs or Lyons, which brings me to the question of do we really need to upgrade Griggs and/or Lyons (or whoever it is that Aish would take over from)

No I don't. He'd come in, one of the players named would go out, and the selectors would re-shuffle the team accordingly.

Not saying he will equal them but you need to project 3-5 years and imagine what he will become not what he is now . He'll be a 25+ possessions per game at high efficiency rate and
will hit targets forward of centre . We might even have occassions where a tall forward leads into space and takes an easy mark out in front in his hands. Something that hasn't happened lch for the last few years

He will succeed and most likely wants to come home to us so it's a no brainer , you just get it done

Absolutely agree. Midfield depth is the easiest thing to find - but class and excellent decision makers are much harder.

Aish seems the footballer's footballer. He has exactly the right running patterns and seems to have a mature understanding of the game.

No - you're wrong. If it was Hendo, then VB goes back and Aish is in the midfield rotations.

If it is CC, then Betts spends less time in the mids and Aish is there in the mids.

Etc.

He would have been about the twelfth to fourteenth picked last week.

So we only draft SA youngsters now, is that the new strategy?
No but this is TRADING not drafting ..... one of the things recruiters are constantly looking at is SA talent that is looking to come home

It would be great to recruit Shiel, Hoskin Elliott , rance etc but to do that you have to either offer a buddy franklin type over the odds offer because there is no link or pull bringing them to Adelaide , and it's not a destination as a city compared to others

So when a top talent that is home grown that could have gone top 3 in the draft but slid slightly as others improved in their draft year wants to possibly come home and play for you then it is silly not to make it happen

You're right not to make it at any cost decision but that's the advantage of him being an SA boy, you don't need to offer a ridiculous contract just a competitive one. First round pick and a swap of later picks and the recruiters would be ecstatic ......they would have picked him 2 years earlier if they had a top 7 pick and now they get him with 2 years of development for possibly less

Having said that we dont draft as many SA kids as we used to nor what WA teams do with WA kids.
From memory I think Geelong has as many SA kids on their list as we do.

WA has a population of 2.5m, compared to our 1.6m, so that's not really surprising. The Geelong part is though.

All the Norwood diehards in here need to take off the Blue and red glasses. It's a romantic notion for you all, sure. This is not, the real Aish. I've watched and tried to see that bit extra than just an ordinary first yr/second yr player and the magic just didn't happen. Fine, if he comes to us cheaply, but he's nowhere near the real McCoy at the same early stage of their careers. I admired the real Aish the whole time he played and it's unfair I know to be comparing James to one of the greats of SA footy, but it's also unfair for you guys to be extolling his virtues based on the pedigree. His first season's form wasn't awful but it was far from eye-catching. I'm sure he'll be a decent player but early signs IMO don't warrant The Crows going all out to get him, and that probably reflects AFCs attitude at the moment.

Tell you what. You are a brutal judge of first year talent! If you can't see the quality of his first year then you clearly have a massive agenda or very very unrealistic standards of what a first year AFL player should achieve.

I don't need to talk about what Aish has shown at AFL level in his first year as it has been done to death in this thread.

You had a chuckle when i suggested I would happily trade Grigg, Lyons and Wright for Aish.

Lyons is entering his 5th year on our list. Has played 23 games.
Grigg is entering his 4th year on our list. Has played 15 games.

Wright has played 81 games and been an okay contributor for us. Had a very solid year in 2012 where he played to his maximum but limited ability. Is a handy depth player at best and looks to be getting moved out of our best 22 by Walsh.

Once again - would trade all 3 of these players for Aish in a heartbeat (not that Brisbane would accept mind you).

Adults are talking here Grotto. Feel free to add to the discussion if you wish.

Perhaps a post containing LOL plus an emoticon is better suited for texting other pre teens?

Well when you start making mature comments regarding drafting decisions then I will, until then I will post my comments in response to yours according to the quality of your posts.

I guess it doesnt surprise me that you are au fait with comments of pre teens.
