Parsons has to go back to the VFL or lose any semblance of confidence he has left. JJ has to play. Narkle has to play. Fogarty and Parfitt as well.
I would even say that if any one of those four does not impact in the next three weeks we need to look at Miers as well.
If Miers does come in it will mean the small forward stocks are pretty low again and we will probably be struggling to make finals. We really them to impact now.
Nonetheless, I am confident that in time the sextet of small forwards we have - McCarthy, JJ, Fog, Narkle, Gregson, Miers we will have at least three quality smalls.
Same goes for Simpson, Cunico, Parsons, O'Connor. wing / midfield types of one sort or another. None are ready now, but they have more time on their side. We have midfielders who can play good footy now in the team. We just need them to replace those out of form for one reason or another. With a solid block of work in the VFL, again I would expect at least two to push through.
To win this year without smalls forwards who can impact we will have to go back to standard transmission. Two talls (Hawkins and Buzza or Taylor, a medium Menz or Crameri or Cockatoo, and Murdoch, Kelly, Menegola and one of the kids filling the gaps. Guthrie and or Selwood to release Murdoch, Kelly. Etc Etc.
A bit short on pizzazz but at least big strong bodies on the park and less passenger time.

Parsons needs to take ballet lessons. lack of intent is not his worst problem. Its his lack of foot coordination.

He had a bad stress fracture foot at the end of his TAC season. Wonder if that is relevant, but tbh, I just don't see that as his issue.

I should point out that at the time of writing, three of those were unavailable for selection, and Narkle had only played the one game and Jones had done nothing in his two or three
I happily agree that, hopefully by the end of the year, he has a copious amount of healthy competition. However, my response was in the context of someone asking why he was getting a game earlier in the year.

I agree with the first part, but I think that the judgement on his VFL performance is harsh. He's only played three games of VFL this year, and was in the best twice.

I don't think it's intent. I'd say that with someone who oozes talent like Motlop, but with Parsons... I think it's that he's too raw, and not yet heavy enough. He just gets pushed off it really easily.
I could agree with Parsons being too raw and lacking strength - but I’ve also seen situations he could have worked harder, given more effort but didn’t....

Probably for a different thread but McCarthy is heading dangerously close to Josh Cowan territory these days. Drafted in 2011 for a grand total of 29 senior games. He has only cracked double figures in a season once.
Right now he spends more time on the sidelines than on the ground.
That isn't to say he doesn't bring more intensity than Parsons but if he can't get on the ground consistently, well....
As for Cockatoo, into his 4th year and he hasn't played more than 11 senior games in a season yet. There are a few of his contemporaries that have appeared over 60 times at senior level.
I like Cockatoo and I agree that both he and McCarthy probably are better bets than Parsons right now but, man, it would be nice if they actually could stay fit for consecutive weeks.
Throw Gregson in with those 2 as well.
Even as a supporter of Parsons I'd much rather Menzel, Parfitt, Narkle and Jones in there right now but there are other guys who seem to escape scrutiny because we don't see them as often.
Purely from a stat perspective;
Corey Gregson (Pick 47, 2014) = 11.5 Disposals per game (39 games), 3.5 tackles per games, 0.5 goals per game
James Parsons (Rookie Selection, 2015) = 11.4 Disposals per game (30 games), 2.3 tackles per game, 0.8 goals per game
Lincoln McCarthy (Pick 66, 2011) = 10.9 Disposals per game (29 games), 2.5 tackles per game, 0.9 goals per game
Lachie Fogarty (Pick 22, 2017) = 14 Disposals per game (12 games), 3.5 tackles per game, 0.4 goals per game
Jamaine Jones (Rookie Selection, 2016) = 9.5 Disposals per game (4 games), 4.8 tackles per game, 0.8 goals per game
Brandon Parfitt (Pick 26, 2016) = 15.4 Disposals per game (26 games), 3.9 tackles per game, 0.6 goals per game
Quinton Narkle (Pick 60, 2016) = 13 Disposals per game (2 games), 3.5 tackles per game, 1.5 goals per game
Does any of this mean I honestly think Parsons should be in the senior side at the moment? F**k no. He is failing the eye test badly in season 2018.
Over his career is he travelling as badly as people suggest he is? From a statistical perspective, he seems to stack up alright against his competition.
The guy clearly needs to spend time in the VFL and find some sort of form. How he has played as many games this season as he has baffles me but if he is going to come under scrutiny then he has a couple of potentially better credentialed mates who probably could be questioned as well.
