Hasn't scored in 7 and has only scored 4 this season.

I like Long, but he's hardly setting the world on fire this year.
To call him horribly out of form would be to suggest that he has ever had that sort of goal scoring record. He's not that sort of striker. He harasses with his pace and footwork and sets up or creates chances for other strikers. He's basically what we've been missing since Aluko has been injured. I'm not for one minute saying Long is in incredibly red-hot form, but to say that he's horribly out of form suggests someone doesn't know the sort of player he is.

Yes, he's a forward that you spent a lot of money to score goals. What is this backward thinking of yours that you spend a lot of money on a forward that you don't want to score much. He has had 15 appearances in the league for 3 goals this season. How is that not out of form? You already have Danny Graham for your much loved method of holding the ball up.

Jelavic or Long need to score goals. Both have not done well in that aspect at all this season.

He hit 23 goals in 45 games a couple of years ago in the Championship. He is clearly capable of scoring them.

I think you'll find I didn't call his horribly out of form.

I'd stand by the fact that he "isn't setting the house on fire" though.

It's sometimes difficult for a striker in a team that is struggling. However I've watched the past 3 games WBA have played and he has been quite poor. Since the plaudits he got following his fantastic performance against Aston Villa he hasn't been at his best.

I'm not sure I totally agree with you though. Personally if I'm spending 7M on a "striker", sure, his pace and footwork is nice, but means nothing if he isn't banging them in.

Hopefully he turns it around at Hull though.

How are you going to set up the team SM?

Are Jelavic and Long going to both start? Perhaps Long to start just off him?

Where did I say that he is going to come in to hold the ball up? I'll repeat the question, have you actually watched Long play this season? He created the equaliser for them against us for starters, and his pace and footwork will allow Jelavic to play off him brilliantly. He is terrible at holding the ball up, that's not what we've got him for, we have Sagbo for that. Graham will piss off back to Sunderland pretty soon.

I get that you like criticising Hull, I don't mind that when you at least have some grounding in fact, but please, give me a thorough analysis of why Long is horribly out of form and I'll shut up. :) Otherwise I'll assume you haven't seen much of him and are reading off a stats sheet.

Why do you think so many on here actually think he's a brilliant signing for us if he's so 'horribly out of form' as you say?

And as for Jelavic, he scored 2 and could have had a third in his last appearance for Everton. He hasn't had a look in because some bloke by the name of Lukaku has been doing ok, but the one game this season he did get to have a proper go at he set up Naismith for the goal against Chelsea. Prior to Martinez coming in he was stellar at Everton until Moyes' game plan started to affect him due to the long ball tactics and Mirallas's style of play, which led to less opportunities for Jelavic, which are what he thrives on.

I'm happy to have a completely calm and reasoned discussion with you about this, since you brought it up, I just wouldn't want people thinking I'm making this thread all about Hull players.

The horribly out of form comment was made by BBJ, which is what I was responding to, not you, don't worry. :)

I would agree with that statement.

I think that may have been because his head has been turned by us with all the talk of him coming here, but to be fair he could and should have had the equaliser against Soton, if Boruc hadn't pulled off what some pundits are calling one of the saves of the season.

It's not 7m, it's 5.5m, but all the same, my point is he's basically what Aluko was for us when fit, the pace and trickery to work the ball into a dangerous area to then lay off to a natural finisher, which we just so happen to have just bought.

Yep exactly that, Long won't start against Norwich, but after that should come in once he settles in the team and play off Jelavic. I'd think best case the team looks like:

McGregor
Davies - Chester- Bruce

Elmo -- - - - - - - - - Brady
- Huddlestone - Livermore - -
- - - - - - - Aluko - - - - - - - -
- - - Long - - Jelavic - - - - -

Strikers are signed to score goals. He hasn't been scoring them. Not sure why that's hard to understand. Yes I've seen him play, I think he's been ineffective most of the season. Hull isn't a big club hence he's a good signing

If anyone wants a striker who doesn't score goals we've got Alvaro Vasquez for you.

Jesus, I hope we sign a striker so we can send his useless ass back to Getafe.

It's hard to understand because it's blatantly not true. Strikers are signed to create goals. I couldn't care less whether it's Long banging them in or if it's Long pressing at an opposition defence and offloading to Jelavic for a tap in. A goal's a goal. From what I've seen and from what I know of our tactics Long is a brilliant signing because he'll create lots of opportunities for Jelavic to finish. That's how strike partnerships work.

Kevin Phillips has been scoring **** all for the last six months but you seem to think he's a great signing at the ripe old age of 40? Surely if he's not banging in goals he's a poor signing? It's the exact same thing. You think he adds an important element to the team, just like Long will for us.

This was all sorted last week I think, but don't think it is official yet.

One for the future (hopefully)

The Evening News has learned that Swansea are willing to sign King now but the player would prefer to stay at Tynecastle and move in the summer. King is out of contract in June and Hearts could be entitled to a development fee of more than £150,000 if he leaves on freedom of contract. The 18-year-old came through the Riccarton youth academy but has made only three senior appearances to date.

Liking because of Tynecastle!

So Xavi and Fabregas are both benched for him in Barcelona? Illa, Isco and Khedera all benched for him in Madrid?
He is better than all those Madrid players (even though Isco is an AM so not sure why you mentioned him)

Xavi isn't going to be around for ever, he would take over from Xavi.

For Jelavic to miss I think you mean. Clearly you haven't seen much of him this year.

You are aware that Long has 1 assist in the league this season? 11 appearances for 3 goals and 1 assist. For 7mil, that's just great value.

Have a read of this: http://www.whoscored.com/Players/13798

Notice the weakness of 'Passing'.

Kevin Phillips costs us absolutely nothing and therefore doesn't matter whether he performs or not. Long will be signed for millions and should be more than what you're expecting.

Looks like both Nani and Anderson will be gone shortly. That will give Moyes plenty of time to dither over not signing anyone.
Thank god, hopefully they both turn into permanent deals.

Nani showed potential but could never get it together, disappointing really.

Gundogan deciding his future soon, please select manchester united, PLEASE!!!!!
