Phil Jaques has delayed his return from back surgery by a week in a move that keeps the race to replace Matthew Hayden open. If Jaques is fit he is expected to be part of next month's Test tour of South Africa, but New South Wales' Phillip Hughes and Chris Rogers, from Victoria, are also strong contenders for the opening spot alongside Simon Katich.

Bugger it.

Hope he recovers but this back injury could be a real pain in the.....back.

This might push Hughes into the spotlight just that little bit more.

Hughes himself is struggling with a hip injury it seems. If hes not right it certainly would throw open the doors. Selectors probably would have to bite the bullet and put aside the off field dramas with Rogers and pick him.

Yeah we can see with Andrew Symonds about how reluctant they are to pick people with "off field dramas"

I wasn't aware there even was any.

Massive blow for Aus. I think some people really underestimate how good a player Jaques is.

Hopefully he can get back sooner rather than later.

Not sure what is "massive blow" talk is. From what i have read the injury and associated surgery he has had required a 3 month layoff. Surgery was performed in mid October i believe so he is on the cusp of a return date. The surgeon was consulted and recommended another weeks rest, its not like the injury has recurred.

The blow regards to him touring SA in defense of our number 1 world ranking.

This series coming up is massive for Australia. We need the best players out on the park.

You really you are such an argumentative #&^t.

He was pain free but has had a relapse because he is now again in pain... FFS. It is a blow if he was not fit to play for his club when he new he was pain free but it flared up again during training.

Difference is he gets along with his teammates. I read Rogers wasn't liked by the other Aussie players.

does anyone have ALOT more information on what has been going on here ? ive heard that said many times, does anyone have an example or at least a rumour with some names (cue bigfooty comedians)

It was from one of the news sites, can't remember exactly what it said but it was due to his off field relationship with his team mates.

Im not an arguing at all love.

Im going on cold hard facts.

Surgery on October 20th.

3 month recovery period.

Meaning a return date of Janurary 20th, 2009.

So his a week early and experienced discomfort in his back. Consulted his surgeon who recommened another weeks rest. Hardly surprising.

Some people here are acting like Jacques has totally relapsed. Not so.

Just keeping things in perspective.

Nothing personal love.

Far from it. As i said earlier, this tour is big for Australia - one of the biggest challenges Australia are to face imo. Australia would love to have Jaques out on the park and certainly do I. Any hiccup in such a short time frame to get back is a blow.

Well he has spent alot of time in the Australian squad....

I am aware of the lack of being liked in the WA setup when he was there.

But **** me dead. If professional cricketers getting paid millions can't get along with a bloke enough that we can't put the best Australian XI on the field instead of someone 2nd rate then they need to take a good hard look at themselves.

Here is the quote

Hayden's departure would leave selectors with a difficult decision ahead of the tours of South Africa and England. Their original choices, Phil Jaques and Shaun Marsh, are returning from surgery and battling a form slump respectively, while Chris Rogers's off-field demeanour remains a sticking point with some members of the Australian team. Phil Hughes has scored heavily for NSW this season and appears a star of the future, but at 21 there is a hesitancy among some to expose him to the high-pressure world of Test cricket too early.

I agree with what you are saying they should be professional and be able to get on with what they are being paid.

It's like a boys club. If you're not apart of it then you're miles away from the pack.

I wonder what on earth happened in his short stint with the Aus squad??

I don't think people realise how serious Jaques' back injury was, how long he carried it for, and the extent of the surgery he had.

A three month return would have been absolute best case, and it is not uncommon for this sort of surgery to require a far longer recuperation.

There was an outside chance of him being fit for South African tour, but I really think his career would be best suited sitting it out and making sure his back is 100% for the Ashes and beyond. The back is not a body part to be messed with.

he may not, but I do. and he is correct, if you screw up your back you definitely shouldn't rush back into any kind of sport. especially cricket. luckily he's not a fast bowler, if that was the case I would have waited another month at least.

Do you have medical knowledge on this issue?

Enough to know how bad a bulging disc needs to be to warrant surgery.

Bulging discs in your back requiring surgery are serious injuries and pretty major operations. This is always a final option and allowing the body enough recovery time, combined with physical therapy, is absolutely crucial.

It should be noted it is generally not a cure, but a method of relieving pain.

I had a mate who popped a disc swinging luggage into the back of his car. Basically left him with a bulging disc in his lower back in constant contact with a nerve. He was in pain 24x7 and eventually required surgery to provide relief.

Took him nearly 6 months to recover, and he still experiences intermittent pain... which he'll most likely have to deal with for the rest of his life. He also has to be very careful what he does and how he does it (ie lifting and twisting).

This is also a condition Jaques will have to manage the rest of his life, which is why it is so important to make sure his back is as good as it will get before coming back.

Found this on bulging disc surgery for anyone else interested...

Whilst visiting my mate in hospital I spoke with his room mate who had surgery too. Poor bastard's disc popped with such force that it pancaked a nerve against a vertebrae, causing crippling pain for months before his operation. The surgeon had to create a trench in the bloke's vertebrae as a recess for the damaged nerve, plus place titanium rods along his spine to stop further pressure on the bulging disc.

Coincidentally he also did it flinging a very heavy suitcase into a station wagon... there is a lesson in that for all of us.

There are a few options for the opening position floating around at the moment who are jsut as good as Rogers so I think it is totally justified that he doesn't get picked due to him being a w@nker - and some of the options are hardly 2nd rate i.e. Hughes & Marsh.

I would much prefer to give one of these guys a go than have a disruptive influence in the team who could threaten team balance.
