We lost Nick Stevens our best midfielder in 2003 and still won the flag. We also lost Primus and Francou. That would be the equivalent of losing Ryder, Wines and Polec

You can not possibly compare the 2004 with the current side, they would wipe the floor with the current side.
We lost Primus but we still had Lade and Brogan !
If Ryder goes down we have absolutely nothing !

He's a very frustrating player with serious limitations. He's useless in the air and a liability in physical contests. He is an unreliable shot for goal (set shot or on the run) despite his reputation. He doesn't have a right foot.

I'll admit that he has surprised me this year and is playing some very good football. But I would prefer to part ways now when he has strong currency, given that his recent consistency is an aberration in the overall context of his career and he has long-term injury concerns.
Lets not be like the other mob and suddenly start exaggerating or making up faults and pretend he's not a quality player, if he goes he'll be a huge loss. Lets hope we can work something out with him. It's not the first time we've had players who the media said were halfway out the door only to sign up a short time later, Pittard was rumoured to be heading to North last year, and Hartlett was out the door to Bombers. Hopefully we can pull something off again.

so your saying you would tell your son you think he should stay for 2 years less and a million and a half dollars less? or you wouldnt take it?
come on be real

Polec can do whatever he likes but that has nothing to do with everyone at Alberton being happy to see him come back for a coffee straight away. He can leave amicably but once he joins a new club, that's his home.

I'd be fairly philosophical about losing Polec. Good player. Has played pretty well this year. Probably top 5 in BnF.
Is he a superstar? No.
Is he replaceable? Yes.
Would I blame him for leaving for that sort of dough? No
Would I want Port to match it? No
Why? I don't think he's actually worth it and has previously had potential career ending injuries.
North taking a massive risk with his foot given how much they play at Etihad.
We'd get a top 10 draft pick for him. In this draft, that is handy.

He's certainty not replaceable now.

I’m not arguing that, just the loss will be very high and badly hurt the side. A lot of people seem to think we’ll be fine without him, which is incredibly wrong.

We will be fine without him, of course we will. He is a very good player, but so are others.

Unless someone can guarantee us a pick that lands us Rankine, I say pay the kid.

Drafting Rockliff and Watts on decent coin is starting to look like a massive fail.

Massive fail by Davies to not get the kid signed up early in the year prior to the big offers coming in.

Only makes me thing we (bizarrely) don't actually want to keep him.

I disagree with others that the 2004 team had more talent, nah they didn't have more talent but boy did they have more hunger and hated losing a whole lot more more.

I was only just watching open Mike last night and they had Anthony Stevens on there and they recalled the time they beat Port in Round 1 in 2002 at Football Park, which was the first game since the Carey saga, there was a shot as the siren sounded and i can't recall who exactly but one of the Port players booted the ball away in absolute disgust. Furious about losing.

History suggests that we went on to win 18 of our next 21 to win the minor premiership, didn't get there in finals but i'd take that over the 7th - 10th spot we are likely to finish this year.

Can anyone confirm the strong rumor going around that the coaches are considering using the off-season to groom the microwave to take over his position?

If so, then nothing to be concerned about ... We have his loss well covered!

You are kidding yourself for a start the 2004 side was highly skilled by foot it was pretty influential on Clarko's drafting philosophy.

Dosent bother me if Polec goes he is very replaceable.
What does bother me is the intelligence behind being able to replace him.
Our recruiting of Watts, Rockliff, Trengove leaves me wondering.
mediocrity at is best!
