I'd like to see us go full Dodoro on them and start at a straight swap for Ben Brown.

Cripps and George walk into the meeting room like this....

We’ll pretty much get what ever we want, all the big names that they’ve offered massive money to to get turned down, if Polly says yes there is no way they’ll lose him at the trade table.

I'd be using the Ben Jacobs freebie as leverage too.

I'm still pretty hopeful that he stays, sounds a bit crows supporterish to suggest losing a gun player could actually benefit us.

We lost Burgoyne, got two high-ish picks, but ended up worse off.

West Coast lost Judd (a Brownlow medalist) and ended up better off.

It is what it is. If he leaves because the money is too good, so be it - we can take the pick(s) to a good draft.

If he stays for an appropriate cost it’s good too.

Really the only two bad scenarios are paying him big overs and he doesn’t deliver, or getting bent over in a trade.

Why are you people arguing with someone who has 28,000 posts over 5 years, plus 100 other accounts and aliases?

You aren't going to 'win', or make any sort of progress.

The arguments over which picks should be swapped and what players are worth is one of the strangest things about bigfooty.

This is what i'm hoping for, i think the reported $500k per year for 3 years is ample but if we needed to meet somewhere halfway i wouldn't be opposed to going as far as $600k per year for 4 years. I think he is worth that much. North have probably gone too far but there are plenty of examples of players staying at their current clubs for much lesser money, generally that is how premiership teams are built. Money is certainly not the be all and end all for a lot of players.

West Coast was a different kettle of fish, they were on the decline and could afford to reset at the draft and really got lucky with Josh Kennedy. Those sorts of trades are rare, generally the club who is losing the player comes out slightly worse off.

600k/3 years - yep
600k/4 years - hmm, maybe
700k+/4+ years - no

It all just comes down to risk.

Current form, nil injury history and no prior history of lifting form during contract negotiations, then you may reach for 700k+/4+ years.

He just has not played at top form consistently or for long enough to warrant such ridiculous money/contract length.

If North want to risk it, knock your socks off if it was up to me, but they will have to pay overs to get him out of SA (in terms of contract and trade).

Yeah, in the current market 600x3 seems about right to me.

At least you know what picks are in play.

The most pointless thing you can do on BigFooty/life is argue over how much a player is being paid. 99% of people don't even know what the salary cap limit is but are experts on how it has been distributed to each player.

I really hope we manage to keep Polec; he's in great form, relatively young and plays a position we have bugger all depth in. Currently he'd be close to the top 5 most important players on our list, and I'd hate to lose him just based on length of contract.

I'd be more than happy to offer a contract greater than 3 years. Obviously here there's a lot unknown about Polec's injury, but in general the main risk with navicular fractures is malunion (ie the bone doesn't heal) due to the poor blood supply. Polec would be past that stage of worrying about malunion - its fully healed now.

The thing is, although at increased risk of another fracture, or arthritis, there's not too much evidence around as to how likely this is to occur, and this risk is modifiable. It's important with these fractures to identify why it had occurred. Sometimes this can be anatomical factors and hence not really modifiable, but it can also be footwear, training techniques/loads etc - now we'd be onto it and monitoring this closely.

if losing polac means a shot at Rankine then im all in, getting norths 1st and trading our first 2 picks for GC's No 3 would be a good deal and they will also have the lynch pick so they will also get top end talent

Ebo going from “I think he’ll sign” to “we won’t hold it against him” has me a little worried to be honest. Hoping to see him re-sign soon but the longer it takes the more likley he is going.

Our most damaging midfeilder and absolutely vital to our being a contender.

Third one is stuffing up who you end up with from the trade ie either with the draft pick(s) you draft duds or injury prone players who don't deliver, and/or the players received in the trade dont deliver.

To be fair Adelaide have really managed to stay on task despite the constant stream of departures.

I love Polly as a player, his strengths are well documented, but agree we shouldn't match these ridiculous terms. North offer these ridiculous deals every other week and the only reason Polly has bitten is that 2 years ago he was sitting on the sidelines for the better part of a year wondering if he'd ever play AFL again. If we bend to this then we set the precedent for every other player manager that they can use competing clubs' salaries to inflate their contracts.

This will be the first time I ever say this but we should take a leaf out of Adelaide's book. If he elects to take the cash and consign himself to spending his prime in footballing wilderness, then we take the top 10 pick and use the money to replace him, restructure and cover the gap. If Adelaide can do it with Dangerfield, Gunston, Tippett, Davis, Lever etc. then we can too.

We don't need to match it, we just need to up our offer a little bit, particularly around years not dollars. Polec loves Port and want to stay.

Apparently had a bust up with Greaves on the bench during the showdown. Came off when he wasn't supposed to and ignored the calls for him to stay on. He got mouthy with Greaves and Hammer told him to pull his head in.

He's such a strange dude, lol.

not a good sign about where he's at. but not necessarily something to worry about though, that sort of stuff happens. big games, emotions.

Greaves going so if there are issues between them wont be a problem.
