Patmore looks quick and Barry, Bonner... there are probably alternatives to change the way we play, might be a good thing in hindsight.

Lol you know that with Polec likely leaving that they'll replace him with Amon.

This isnt a case of picking Rockliff, Watts etc over Polec. The club just doesnt value Jared in comparison to what other clubs do. It's going to be a massive mistake given we already are one of the slowest and unskilled teams in the comp.

Shouldn't have any problems keeping Polec then
It’s almost like we don’t want to give a guy more than 3 years who’s career was almost finished by a foot injury that still hinders his training schedule.

Our lack of suitable outside run is bad list management but we can't torpedo any future contract negotiations by paying North Melbourne level money/ contact length for every player in the future so no point setting a precedent here. Looks like he'll likely go, be mature and get a good trade and move forward. WCE did it with Judd and I'm sure there are plenty of other examples I can't be bothered looking up.The true winner in any trade can only be judged after a few years anyway so no point getting worked up early on

Take it as a good kick up the bum to the list managers to recruit for a more balanced list and look at ruck/kpp/outside speed instead of picking up every HBF and inside mid that can hold but not necessarily kick a football.

I reckon he’ll stay.

I've actually been pulled up on this one. His foot is absolutely fine, very little to no hangover effects at all. We only deload him because we're overly cautious.

We aren't deciding to give him a 3 year deal because of this at all. We're more worried about his performance dropping off after he signs a long term deal, he's notorious internally for choosing to perform at his best in contract years. Polec himself openly admits that to everyone.

A guy who is our only elite ball using midfeilder, having a career best year when the next two closed guys to being able to come into the side to replace him and play his role aren’t AFL standard.

Polec must be very hard to coach. More of an instinct and natural talent player rather than a 'trust in the system' kind've guy. Bet he gives Bass an absolute heart attack. If he was in any way coachable we'd be giving him exactly what he wants. Or maybe he just isn't in the clique...

I reckon if we really wanted to keep him we’d pony up more cash and a longer contract. But I reckon the club has decided it’s prepared to let him go for a top 10 pick so we can get nuts deep into this draft.
I’m not really all that fussed either way. Yes, he had a career best year, but there’s no guarantees he won’t follow that up with a relatively poor one, like so many of our “career best year” players seem to do.
I’m a little excited to see what we can draft with that pick to be honest. I like Polec, and he’s had a great year. But he’s as prone to a stinker game as anyone, and his one-sidedness is getting worked out by the competition. Maybe this year was peak Polec. Time will tell.
Anyway, the decision is out of our hands. And those saying Amon will be played in his role next year, Amon more than likely won’t be on the list in 2019.

So can we not give him more money but less years?

Something stinks when we supposedly "deload" him (using your word) and hes the only player in our side who looks fresh and can run through the lines on game day.

Did you read the post immediately above you?

I know we will get enticed by the potential in draftees but if we could legitimately find a speedy midfielder that can kick on both feet, not need a contract in front of him in order to show good form and have a defensive side, then I'd be over the moon.

The timing here suits us just fine.

That’s why you draft/trade. I’m not loosing any sleep if he goes. I hope we give Bonner a go on his wing this week.

So can we not give him more money but less years?

KT spoke about this on the weekend. He said we can go either way, more years with less money or more money but shorter contract. We can't do both which is what North are offering.

KT sounded like he wouldn't blame Polec for taking the North offer but says we are still negotiating.

It sounds like 70-30 he will go but the ship hasn't sailed yet.

Well that is a bit of a red flag in and of itself.

Depends on his reasoning I guess. If it's because he thinks his body is going to break down in the next couple of seasons then it's definitely a red flag, but that's something the Port medical staff should know as well (or better) than him.

If we're trying to keep him motivated then surely there is some middle ground, triggers for additional years, etc. I'm still holding out some hope that he's staying, he's played this game before (the bidding way between us an the Crows) so hopefully he's just trying to wrangle something extra and doesn't intend to leave.

How many mids in the afl fit that description? 1? 2? If you’re being kind.

The odds of finding that in the draft are 1/13000
