When’s the last time we had the best player in the comp?

Danger 2016? By 2017 he was on equal footing with Dusty.

Prior to that, GAJ 2007-2010?

Hawkins and Selwood have been top 5 league wide at various points but neither has been clear #1 IMO.

What a privilege it is to watch #5 every week.

I reckon Hawkins was in 2020.

What a champ Jezza is, so lucky to watch him every week run around in the hoops.

Every game he just looks like a bloke out there loving kicking the footy around with mates, yet he’s the best player in the comp at the same time.
As with Danger, it feels like Jezza was ALWAYS a Cat. He settled in seamlessly. My favourite player!!

Yeah, too right! The Adelaide Crows were simply one of Patrick Dangerfield's 'junior' clubs, just as Greater Western Sydney was Jeremy Cameron's. They helped develop the players as all junior clubs should, but Paddy and Jezza didn't arrive till they arrived at Geelong:thumbsu:

Didn't quite realise just how good Jezza was until he donned the hoops.
All it took was one game to see his speed, skill and long accurate kicks.
From believing Cats paid too much in the trade to: Best trade deal ever.
His boot has helped carry the Cats across the line regularly and reliably.
Congratulations on the 250 game milestone.
His teammates need to deliver Jezza a bag-full of goals and a win today.

Jeremy Cameron feels like the last of his kind. Barring injury, he should surpass 800 goals, and I’m not sure we’ll see another player achieve that again. The closest possibility would be if Sam Darcy turns out to be something truly special at the Bulldogs.

These kinds of "we'll never see [achievement X] happen again" claims are always made about exceptional sportspeople, and with the exception of Bradman in cricket, they're always wrong.

At one point people were saying Federer was so far and away the tennis GOAT that his dominance and Grand Slam title record would never be matched, and not only did that end up being proven wrong almost immediately, but his achievements were overtaken by multiple players whose careers were concurrent with his.

I guarantee we will see players kick 800 goals again.

Interesting read below Baudolino: of AFL/VFL leading goal kicker through the decades, it almost works in cycles both with amount of goals kicked within a season and the elite goal kickers of their time.... but also how the game was played within that generation.... and yeah also tend to agree with your comment of 800 goals will happen again, it'll just come down to when!

BTW Baudolino: 'good examples' with Federer, etc but also with Bradman being the exception which I'm sure will 'never be broken'.

Superstar!
People were saying Dangerfield will carry us to a flag but this is (and always has been), the one player who completely shifted our trajectory the moment he signed.

When he's running hot, there's not been a better forward in the game since 'primetime' Buddy Franklin.

Geelong's premiership hopes lay squarely at the feet on Jezza for the remainder of the 2025 season.

Get another 6 games into him and lock away the 100 for Geelong….

Was a good interview …. Not much Geelong in it really apart form the background…. The informing the club and friends that he was going o Geelong shows why it must be difficult for some to move.

I guess we are never going to catch the 171 games he played in orange.
