Jesse Hogan Contract Negotiations (Titus O'Reilly)

If Neale would entertain a move, I'd have him on the first plane out.

Hogan is THAT good

Then we have to find 2 decent first round picks to add to it. If we finish bottom 10 there's one. Then we'd need a top 5 pick to seal it - i'd imagine we'd need to give up a couple of very good players to get that. I'm not really sure gutting our playing list just to get him would be that good an idea. And not just from a pure playing strength perspective, also from a cultural one.

Very true words there.

Neale and two picks should do it if Jessie declares Freo is where he wants to be. It's not to dissimilar to the JUDD trade.
Will never happen though.
During high school I dreamed about kissing the 'hot girl' for about 5 years, so I've got form in the 'hanging onto a dream that will never happen' area.

Maybe.
West Coast are in the same position as us, and if Jesse wants to come home they'll have to come up with something too

No denying Jesse's talents but I'm not keen on the gut and cultural effects of getting him. But if theres a signal of their plan of attack it could be there drafting of Eastern States kids with our high picks.

Maybe Weller, Tucker, Balic etc are possible bait to use, hoping they come on and are seen as possible elite. Easier to trade those boys home than WA kids.

Of course, but that's not the point. Bicco compared it to the Judd trade, and it's a fair call. How did that work out for Carlton? They lost a pick 3, pick 20 (which the Eagles wasted to an extent but it's unlikely Carlton would have picked up chomper and Notte) and probably the best current full forward in the league for a player with half his career gone. Judd was as good for Carlton as you could have expected, yet they unquestionably lost the trade. And have generally lost at football as well.

And then you think back to the Fev trade - obviously a different boat to Judd or Hogan, but it shows what can happen when you shop otherwise loyal players around. You piss off those players and you also piss off players at the club that question the loyalty of the club. Brisbane were on the up at that time, yet have been in a death spiral ever since with half the list wanting to get out. We ask players to be loyal to clubs, yet surely we'd expect a level of loyalty from clubs to players. And Freo, in recent times at least, appears to have incorporated that into our list management strategy.

In the age of free agency, trading for big names is a mugs game.

I rather speed up uebergang development than getting hooker, after one year out of the game we are taking a big risk here. If really we go and get him lets put a clause regarding performance base in the contract.( slyvia anyone remember). Our trade history normally show either we don't get them or we get them they turn out spud.

Risk is debatable.

We'd be idiots not to find cap space for Hooker if he wanted to come to Freo imo - doubt it'd be as high as 800k+, thinking in the 600s but "irregardless" contracts can be creatively worked to fit. He'll still likely be one of the AFL's best KPDs when he gets back, and having him and Johnson in our defensive line up whilst our youngsters (eg A.Pearce and Collins) develop should have our KPD stocks completely sorted for the next few years. Midfield - tick, Defence - tick, Forward line - still a bit of work to be done.

Prepare our forward line will be the main focus. If hooker available and not causing too much difficulty extending fyfe contract and our pursuing Hogan by all mean go for it. Fyfe + Hogan = at least 1.5 to 2 million deal a year.

Plenty of rumours he is being offered close to 1 million.

Plenty of media saying that. Truth is possibly just below that. I couldn't see him getting less that 800k though. I think he is overrated.

There are about 50 AFL players over 600k at the moment. I'd probably have Hooker in the top 50 players but I wouldn't have him in the first half of that, hence why I think 800k or over is over-priced. AFL.com was reporting offers would likely be up to 700k and may be as high as 800k. But from what I recall the final deals are always a fair bit less than what the media speculates.

Wht Hogan deal will detour to hooker , he is way overpriced.
