Someone on the Foxsports Blog said that Jesse Smith had a medical with the Pies.

Like his toughness not sure what deal might be afoot

would be a deadset gun by now if he was in any way fit but he has managed just 30 odd games in 6 years. His body keeps letting him down. Would be worth at punt with anything from about pick 40-50 onwards. Anything else is too much of a risk. You could say its a little like the rusling scenario although smith is a mid/running half back

ankles and hamstrings issues for 6 years now

Still very skinny, would have to be extremely cheap (anthony corrie style) and would need to have passed the medical

Had a medical and failed apparentally ala Steve Johnson. Not sure where i read it but i did definitely read it

Yeah, look how that turned out. Johnson 'failed' his medical too.

Failed it like a fox. Doctors are given too much credence in this industry. If Johnson is ANYTHING to go by, they obviously don't have much of a clue.

I also heard yesterday on SEN that Neil Balme was seen leaving Arden St with X-rays in hand. This was followed up by a caller saying pending medical results Geelong were a monty to pick him up.

Ah trade time, I love it!

Just some more about him, for those who aren't aware of who he is:

(Stats from 2009 AFL Prospectus and AFL Tables)

His profile in the 2009 AFL Prospectus says:
"Ankle and hamstring injuries in 2008 restricted Smith to two AFL games and just five games for North Ballarat in the VFL. He was unable to consolidate on his solid form shown in 2007 when he averaged 17 disposals and three rebound 50s per match. His ball use is excellent and he proved he could perform on the big stage when he finished with 27 disposals, six marks, three inside 50s and four rebound 50s in the 2007 semi-final win against Hawthorn."
"Fantasy Freako says: Durability is a massive concern. His price is far to low to ignore though."

Pretty much sounds like a backline version of Sean Rusling (who himself has played just 14 of a possible 119 games since being drafted), especially considering as they both came from the 2004 Draft. Great potential (I really like those disposal efficiency numbers coming off half back), but will he ever stay fit long enough to realise it? He's rated highly by North people, and would certainly be a required player if fit I'd imagine. He'd be at his lowest value right now though, so we should be able to get him pretty cheap (4th round pick?) if he's able to play.

If he came cheap I'd be wrapped. So talented. Take the risk to get him right.

If it's the bloke I am thinking of he is a quality footballer with a good long kick. If we thought we could get him fit he'd be a real asset. You can't afford to pay much for a bloke with his injury concerns though.

i guess if we move Goldsack on.... Jesse Smith would be a good replacement

Lots of talk about him going to Geelong in exchange for a pick swap and Wocjinski (sp?).

And yeah, apparently the medical that Collingwood did wasn't very positive in it's assessment.

I would think moving Goldsack on would have a lot to do with having Shaw, O’Brien, Maxwell and Toovey as potential back pocket/flakers before you get down to who’s next in line. Makes sense to trade a player who plays a role you have other decent options for. Smith might replace Toovey. Ability wise he would be capable but ability os only part of the equation. Worth a punt but only a cheap one.

I'd take him as well, but we aren't going to have the picks to do it at this stage. Plus the news from his medical didn't sound too positive.

He looked terrific in 2007

WHat about Joel Macdonald??? 25 year old who is a very good player but has been forced to play more defensive with Drummond in the team.

Apparently Brisbane are only asking for a 3/4th rounder, what a steal!

Don't want him.

The way he left North has left a sour taste in my mouth about the guy. Basically blaming them for all his misfortune with injury, was immature and he's not the type of person i'd want around our club.

Adding to this our backlineis already solid and I feel he'd be surplus to requirements.

Can you do me a favour mate. Watch the 2007 semi final Hawthorn Vs Kangaroos. Then after u do, tell me whether we should get Jesse Smith.

He is now over his injuries, and ready for a huge pre season.... Sourse: He is my Gf's sisters Best Friend!!!

Cool tell him from us, that unless he learns how to run with tearing a muscle or wrecking a joint he should keep quiet

i dont care how good the player is im with this guy

any player that runs a team down in the media we dont want at this club we cant expect respect from our list if we bring in bone heads like this guy and besides why should we even give this guy a chance to shut his mouth his no star player that can determine a premiership or not his probley not good enough for our best 22

You should probably read his comments before shooting off your mouths, he in no way denigrated the club at all.

Smith said his career, which is precariously placed because of chronic ankle and hamstring problems, might be over if he stayed at Arden St.

"I love the club. I grew up with it with dad playing there and I will always love it and want the best for it, but it is time for me to go because I am at a critical stage.

"The situation I am in is pretty dire. I know I have one last shot at it. If it doesn't work I know I will have exhausted all options.

"I have gone and looked at other clubs, and they are pouring money into their medical, and strength and conditioning departments."

Smith said there was no chance he would play again with the Roos, leaving his career match tally for the club at 27 in five seasons, and that his wage with a new club would be significantly less than what he had been offered by the Roos.

He said new North coach Brad Scott had been sympathetic to his plight.

"In the first meeting I had with Brad I spoke about my desire to go elsewhere and he said he understands," Smith said.

"He knows the frustration I have had in the past two years. The thing that Brad did concede to me was that although the facilities (at Arden St) are going to be fantastic, there hasn't been enough money put into the medical and strength and conditioning teams.

"There has been too much work given to not enough people in those areas, and I can't stress how good (North doctor) Con (Mitropoulos) and the physios Roger (Moore) and Gordon (McDonald) have been to me.

"Brad said he would be looking at getting full-time staff, but that it wouldn't happen straight away. It will take the club 12-18 months to get the whole structure together and for me, because I've had so many injuries, staying at a club that doesn't have a medical staff, and without knowing how that new set-up is going to work, I'd be foolish not to look elsewhere."
