Great player no doubt but was gifted the free and then the bonus 50M penalty. Umpires breaking fans hearts for as long as the game has been played.
Both there, and both better calls than 90% of the decisions both ways all day long. Umpires truly shocking, but did not affect the outcome one way or the other.

And Jimmy would have kicked it anywhere from 0-60 metres out. Come on people, you know it.

Free kick was there, clearly in the back.

As for he 50 though the ball was kicked about very quickly after the whistle, very harsh call

Except both the free & the 50 were there so not really a gift - more stupidity on the part of the North player who kicked it away in frustration.

Can't say that North didn't make more than one stupid error in that final quarter and even in the final 5 minutes but at the end of the day the ump paid a stupid free in what was a 50/50 situation at best esp., given the conditions. This means that the final result was based on umpires decision. Reckon he will be dropped next week.

Bit of a strange one is jimbob. Does nothing for the first 3 quarters but destroys teams in the clutch moments.
Hard to work out - looked to be cherry ripe in the pre-season but hasn't quite displayed that form so far in rounds 1 and 2. I thought he might have a vintage year now that he's over the injury he carried most of last year.

Suspect he just needs a bit more of a challenge to get him going now - seems to come good when truly required these days.

If the decision is correct why should he be dropped? Should have been dropped if he didn't call it.

Agree that he probably would have kicked it without the 50M but still wrong decision. Not a good way for the game to be decided because in the end the result was based on the umpires whistle. The sport is better than that.

Yep, we lost this today because we couldn't handle your pressure....but rest assured the gap between us and you is closing.
LOL!!!!!
Six years ago we beat you by over 100 points in a final. We have since won 3 flags, compared to not much From the Arden St boys (genuinely can't even remember how many finals series you've made since then...I do know you almost lost by 100 points in a final last year...).

It's about ****ing time you showed any semblance at all of the gap closing!!

I never understand the logic here - a bad free kick in the first minute decides the game just as much as a bad free kick in the last minute. Goals are worth the same 6 points whenever they happen.

I take your point though, no-one wants to see games decided by free kicks. In this case, the North player should have avoided what was certainly a pay-able push in the back inside 50. Umpires had shown a tendency to pay them all day long. And kicking the ball away was just silly.

Fair's fair, North cut the (slightly groggy) Cats apart in the first half. Have a look at the kick and mark stats - Cats got smashed. If North had been able to keep it up, and if Geelong hadn't woken up, then a bit North win was on the cards.

I saw a lot to like about North today. Smart ball use, good disposal, and very handy forward line and structure. Need to improve their ability to control the game and the ball when direct pressure is applied though - just like the Hawks last week, they wilted under the manic onslaught the Cats can thankfully still produce when prodded into action.

As a spoilt Cats fan, it's easy to overlook how many wins (like today) the Cats manage to get away with thanks to having some ridiculous raw talent and a bizarrely strong will to win. Sounds arrogant but I don't think it reflects poorly on the opposition to lose narrowly to such a team.

I agree to an extent... About 2 minutes to go a pretty soft (but still there) 50m penalty was given to Wells and he kicked a goal, effected the final score the other way. Those 50ms almost cancelled each other out, Brad Scott conceded as much also. But like him, I'm more of the persuasion to acknowledge what happens over 4 quarters than to focus on the final moments and umpiring calls, which also amazingly occur over 4 quarters. Game wasn't deciding by the umpires in the last seconds, but by the players that took the field and performed over 2 hours.

was talking to another footy fan today and the thing that separates a good side from a great side is that a great side will put an opposition side away, and not giving them a chance to come back, Richmond didnt do this to carlton last week, and both Hawthorn/Nth Melb failed to do it against a Geelong

Agree with your point that the game is played over 4 quarters and this is just my opinion but umpires need to stay out of it as much as possible when a game is on a knife's edge. They need to have a feel for the game and use a bit more common sense. Those types of frees are always a toss of the coin.

just like 20 other similar incidents all day, but the whistle got pulled for THAT one.

Probably the same umpire who gave the head high to the Cats player who was bumped by the Cats player on the wing last quarter.

Maybe it was the same ump who gave Scott Thompson his free for 'Best Dive On A Football Field Since Leroy Jetta'

All good though....but as sure as I know from the 1990's when we were on top, that all eras come to an end.

Be nice to the people when on top....because its a long way back down Marcia.
