First time Ive seen Carlisle and OMG he is a ****ing huge.

Bluey Steele Is amazing and will only get better. I want to say I rate Long higher than Lonie & sinclair(who I rate highly) but have to remind myself it was just a half.

A shout out to Koby Stevens working his ass off but running around all over the place. Hasn't Quite worked out the system yet but love his work rate.

Longer firming for round 1. I thought Minch was important.

Armo early signs are we are in for a better 2017 than last season.

Dunstan for a break out year ??

Oh and how good was Jack Steeke.

Geez there is going to be some intersting battles for best 22 status going in to round one. As I see it:
Acres vs Steele
Wright vs Gresham vs Loine vs Sinclair vs Long vs Minch
Sav vs Webster vs D Mac vs Gilbert
Dunstan vs Stevens
Hickey vs Longer
Of all of those battles, I think we can only really afford to play one from each line, maybe two from the small forwards line depending on structure. Really wanted Acres to stand up today but he just seems to float out of games a bit. He's got a beautiful kick when he clears out of the center though, probably provides the best centre clearences without being our best centre clearence player, if you get my drift

What a great performance. Great to see the saints maintain their defensive pressure throughout the entire game even though we were miles ahead. So many positives:
- Steele's all round game. Won a lot of the footy, pressure and tackling fantastic and able to hit the scoreboard as well.
- Bruce with a performance like 2015. Great to see him kick a bag and more importantly holding his marks.
- Billings winning the footy with ease. Hopefully this carries into the season proper and maintains consistency. His disposal is so damaging.
- Paddy marking it all over the ground. Good to see him covering more territory. Would loved for him to kick a bag himself but understand he played a more roaming role.
- Really impressed with Wright. Brings the defensive forward pressure and hit the scoreboard. While the knock has been on his disposal and the attacking aspect to his game, feel that even with his deficiencies, still has more of an impact on the scoreboard than Lonie. Definitely ahead of Lonie and Sincs.
- Great to have the midfield depth. Keeping everyone on their toes. From what I have seen in the pre season so far, healthy competition has helped elevate everyone's game. Good signs when the likes of Stevens will be the emergency or injury cover.

Rolling best 22:

B GEARY BROWN DEMPSTER
HB MONTAGNA CARLISLE ROBERTON
C RIEWOLDT DUNSTAN NEWNES
HF BILLINGS McCARTIN WELLER
F GRESHAM BRUCE MEMBREY
R HICKEY STEVEN STEELE
INT ROSS SAVAGE WRIGHT ARMITAGE

EMER GILBERT ACRES STEVENS

he's the complete opposite of steele. steele doesnt seem to mind the physical stuff where as acres doesnt look interested in it, he wants to be all silk when he's not a classy player

acres asset is his size and mobility. if he doesnt start to recognise that size and use it then he's going to find himself in some serious strife. we have blokes much smaller than him who play taller than he does
Yeah that loose ball he went past in the 3rd wasnt a great look at all.
I wonder what he looks like during the week. More involved? Energy during training? Does he put his head over the ball?
Slow burn for me.

Steele was awesome. Long and Wright did well. Billings hit the targets regularly. The second half of the match was like a training drill.

So, I don't think one can take much out of the second half other than fitness levels are top notch and I can easily forecast the team running out the opposition in red time and the 2nd half.

I think the team's playing together for the first few times as Carlisle, Brown, Steele, Long, etc are playing together. Should improve as the season goes on...

hes not the complete opposite in fact there probably closest to like for like in our team. There's a myth that acres doesn't like the hard stuff or that he looks disinterested but there both wrong. A lot of players who have the basketball background look like that. Acres likes to play in a way that avoids contact as most players do. It's actually smarter then going head first and trying to break tackles. However when the time is there he is more then willing to take the tackle he's just good at getting a disposal off with out getting contact . Also he lays more tackles then he gets credit for. I'm not sure how many he was listed as having but from watching the game closely it seemed like 5-6. We still need to give him patience the last 5 games and Melbourne game last year showed what he's capable of. He's only played about 25 games.
