Game Day JLT 2 Saints v Carlton

I've had people on here laugh at me when I suggest that Steele is just as good if not a better prospect than Acres.

Pretty confident in my call at the moment.

Laughing is a bit much but probably worth waiting on both. Steele had a great game today but has been so so after coming off an interrupted preseason. Blake finished the year on fire and started a new one like wet grass. I think Blake has a more flashy set of attributes but Steele looks driven and solid. Nice problem to have anyway.

My man Sinclairs game was handy for his first run of the year (excluding intra).

4 scoring shots, 1.3.
14 disposals and 8 marks. 3 tackles.

Will need to take all of his chances as his position has lots of competition with Long, Wright & Lonie all playing well as well.
Crazy amount of competition for a spot between Wright, Lonie, Sincs, Minch, Long and maybe Gresh. 6 of them fighting for as few as one spot!

Good lord our additions are solid. If Carlisle, Brown, Steele and Long and the knock on effect their inclusions have does not elevate us to become a top 8 team well I'll be damned

Continually surprised by Wright, never thought he was going to make it, but he keeps getting better and better. Would almost be my first choice small in the forward line now

He probably doesn't have the talent as the others, but I'd have Wright as my #1 small forward for Round 1. Just plays it perfectly. Need to see more of Long as it was only a half of football to reserve judgement. But promising from what we've seen so far. I'd have Minchington on par with Sinclair then Lonie behind them. Unfortunately Lonie just gets rag dolled too easily. At the moment it doesn't seem too much difference between them all, but just think Wright is playing his role the best. He sticks the tackles the most as well which is very important. I wouldn't put Gresham in the picture, as the coaching staff are grooming him more for a midfield role.

Guess it's going to be a matter of form and fitness. You wouldn't want to have two bad games in row as small forward being a saint.

Hopefully it drives them All to get better.

I'm not just going off this pre season only, but their careers so far. I'm also not saying Steele is going to be a much better player. I think both will still be good. But I think people overrate Acres a bit and probably haven't seen a lot of Steele and just judge him as a fringe player from the Giants. The guy wins the contest, has good skill and kicks goals. He's also very consistent, has rarely played a bad game.

Not sure if Acres did much wrong myself. Played forward a fair bit (looked like he replaced Membrey) when Bruce and McCartin were rampant, spent more time in the middle, ended up with 15 possessions 100% eff. Seems OK to me. Must be a terrible burden to carry if you look "laconic" - automatically translates into not trying hard enough.

My apologies to Nathan Wright - I'd written him off but he keeps improving - up till half time I was going to say automatic starting 22 (defensive forward/goal kicker) however that No 21 looks a very likely type. Fanatical attack on the man and the ball reminds me of a certain saints player who was about the same size but with the same ferocious desire for the ball.

If Long turns out 1/4 as good as Cuz I'd be rapt.

Steele looked the goods and Koby Stevens adds necessary back up grunt power to our midfield.

My apologies also to Nathan Brown - starting 22

As great as this was to watch I'm really pleased this game is not the one leading into Round 1. The stiffer competition Sydney will provide will be far more beneficial.

So both us and the Dreamons have smashed the Blues. We've won by a bigger margin but looks like Carlton fielded a stronger side last week.

Man, Round 1 is going to be huge. Hope we come away with the 4 points.

Ultimately, though, we beat a VFL team really. Carlton were bottom 4 and had 5-6 of their best 22 missing today. So, it's more about our game style that you can comment about. Good to see our ball movement was a little more measured today. Not just blazing away randomly but actually trying to find some targets. Loved our intent around the ball as well. Carlton went with a very young team and we wanted to hurt them. They were getting absolutely smashed in tackles!

By the way we also had at least 6-8 out of the best 22

Just quietly, I had a look at the highlights package on the AFL app on my way home and they have more highlights of Carlton scoring junk time goals than they do of us... I know its only a preseason game, but really?

They only scored 4 goals. None were in junk time. 1 goal in the last quarter

:drunk:
