Re: 26. Joe Anderson

Cheers J, here's 10 minutes with Joey to get it started.

10 Minutes with Joey Anderson

12:00:00 AM Wed 17 January, 2007 | Back
Mike & Dan Exclusive to AFL BigPond Network

Joe Anderson was taken with Pick 67 in the 2006 National Draft, and was down at MC Labour Park later that week for an introduction to the Boys. Now, after we’ve all settled down from Christmas and New Years, Anderson is getting his formal introduction to the VIPs of Carlton – the Members!

You were born on the day before Christmas. Bummer huh.

Ha ha, not really. I always get 2 sets of presents – I wake up on Christmas Eve and tease my little brothers and sisters (Anderson is the second child in a family of 8 children – 5 boys and 3 girls), and then I get more presents the next day.
Tell us about your style of game - we have read that you're a rebounding defender. What exactly does that mean?

Rebounding defender is about right – I’m a hard running half back flanker.
Tell us about your pre-season. Is it hard? Is it fun?

A bit of both really – it’s tiring, but it’s good though.

What, if anything, have you particularly tried to focus on this pre-season?

Everything! You’ve got to take everything into your mind, and concentrate. Balance – balancing it all out, that’s what I’m focusing on.

There seems to be an Assistant Coach for every player this year. Are you spending your time with one Coach in particular?

Gavin Crosisca – the defense Coach. I’ve been working with him mostly.

What are your expectations for your first year in the Navy Blue? Do you expect to spend the year playing with the Bullants, or can you crack it for a senior spot?

We haven’t really talked about that stuff yet. We have some practice matches coming up. Maybe then they’ll work it out?

You’ve come down from the Northern Territory. What are your first impressions of Melbourne? </I>

Big, too big really. It’s a completely different lifestyle. Darwin is more outgoing, and more spread out. Melbourne seems more compact, and people like doing things off on their own.

The game seems to be played a lot differently in the Northern Territory. Can you tell us about the style of game that is played there?

I haven’t seen much of the footy down here, but in Darwin it’s a running game.

Tell us about the youth tour of South Africa last year. What was that about?

We were there to promote the game, to try to increase the numbers playing it over there. It was organized through the AFL. We were there for about 2 and a half weeks – the Indigenous Under 18 team.

Our talent scouts tell us that you played a cracking grand final last year, tagging a former Blue in Heath Culpitt and took him right out of the game.

Yes, we won by about 6 goals. Culpitt is a good player and he won the Best Player in the League award, and I was on him and I was given the second best player out there.

What are your current living arrangements? Are you billeted out with a family or living with other teammates?

I’ve been placed in with a family in Kensington. It’s quiet, but close to the ground – only 10 minutes.

We’ve noticed the pictures of you with your hair. A past great of Carlton, Tommy Alvin, once was tackled by the hair, and what's worse - it was paid holding the ball. Ever had anything similar happen to you?

Ha, no, that’s never happened to me. It might be too high to grab on to.

You have inherited the number worn by David Rhys-Jones. Do you have an
aggressive streak in you?

No, I’m pretty fair. Rhys-Jones and Deluca – they are 2 players I know who have worn it.

And finally, what sort of nicknames have you received - Angry? Neo?

No, I’m just Joey or Ando.

Pacey, hard-running defender. Now doesn’t that sound good. Add the draft commendations on young Anderson, including words of support from Territorian Great Andy McLeod, and you see that the Blues have yet another top-notch youngster to add to the huge group we already have. Bring on 2007 and beyond, we say, bring it on. We’ve had enough of our stay at the bottom of the class.

Re: 26. Joe Anderson

Blue over moon for 1101 reasons
CARLTON draftee Joe Anderson will play his first AFL game tomorrow when the Blues take on West Coast at Subiaco.

The 18-year-old defender was selected at No. 67 in last year's national draft after a best-and-fairest year with Darwin.

Former Carlton half-forward Syd Jackson was on hand at yesterday's training session to present Anderson with the club's 1101st player pin.

The club is flying Anderson's mother, father and grandfather to Perth to witness his debut.
A great touch. :thumbsu:

You have to love Joey after hearing about his attitude and he has a million dollar smile.

Benjamin, Betts, Anderson and Walker playing in the one side would be very exciting for Carlton.

DO IT!

Thanks for the link ILF :thumbsu: I got goosebumps reading that :) and the above 4 names :)

Re: 26. Joe Anderson

Always great to see a player debut, good luck to Anderson. :)

Fantastic effort by him, to get a chance this early in the season given he was taken at 67 and debuting ahead of quite a few players from not only his draft, but the previous two as well.

Nice to see some more positive publicity - back page of the Herald Sun today, big pic of Joey Anderson. Was the first thing my dad said to me from coming home from shopping this morning. A very excited dad, especially to see that Joey has tree trunks for legs :)

Re: 26. Joe Anderson

Today against the Doggies was the first time ive seen him play, but i liked the look of him. He only had 6 possessions before leaving the field for good in the 3rd quarter due to a hamstring injury, but i liked the way he attacked the footy. Went in hard. His 6 possessions, all handballs, were pretty much contested, and i think he had 4 good tackles, most notably the one against Eagleton, which resulted in his hamstring injury, but also stopped Eagleton kicking a goal - instead kicking it out on the full. Like the way he goes about. Unlucky he got injured

Re: 26. Joe Anderson

He held Eagleton to 12 possies before his injury, and 4-5 of those were not quality with extreme pressure (eff % down to 60% I think). great job on a great player.
His best game for us by far, and great to see him bounce back after a disappointing match vs Crows where he was spanked.

Still looks very scared when he gets the footy, so run with roles might suit him until he gets some confidence.

Makes you appreciate Gibbs and Murph so much more when you see Ando panic with the footy.

good pick up though, and can't wait till he gets back from injury to continue his development.

Re: 26. Joe Anderson

I think Ando will be fit for round one and ready to make acquaintances with the great Mitch Morton.
Colin Wisbey said:
ANDERSON, Joseph (67 CAR) [15] Rapidly improving 188cm, virtually bottom-age,
hard-running utility. Still raw, not silky, but made for today's game. Great
endurance, "handy" pace, huge leap, reads the play well, knows how to find the
pill, routinely looks for best option, fairly often delivers accurately, is
courageous and crashes packs. Proven himself against men. Main queries (all
mentality-related) are: plays off the pack / too reactive / too Predator,
defensive smarts, accountability. I've ranked him mainly on upside. He still has
a heap of improvement in him. The sealers for me were (1) he will leave no stone
unturned (2) his rapid improvement since mid '05 including radical changes to
his on-field presence, impact, and physical attributes. Even if he can't fix the
flaws I've identified, he still has enough going for him to be a fairly handy
60-100 gamer. In the '05 U18 and subsequent '05 U16 Champs I observed he was
vanilla-size and build, introverted and played vanilla and introverted. I was
staggered to hear that, just 8 months later, he won Darwin Seniors B&F (as 17yo)
and was runner-up to Daryl White for B&F medal in the '06 NT Seniors GF. Come
the '06 TAC trials, I couldn't believe the dramatic transformation. He was now a
few centimetres taller, had filled out really well, had significantly lifted his
pace, and played with a flair, confidence and physicality that were virtually
non-existent a year earlier. Even his appearance and persona were markedly
different. I was very impressed with what he did at the '06 U18 Champs, and
quite impressed with much from his lead-up games. However I was still less than
impressed with what he did NOT do. Much of the time, he played virtually loose
man across half-back, presumably to coach's instructions, which makes assessing
him a bit more difficult. He was still too reactive a bit too often and still a
bit too often "played off the pack". In AFL he won't be able to wait to see how
the play in his immediate area unfolds before deciding to involve himself, or
letting an opponent have first crack, or not displaying appropriate defensive
effort or defensive smarts. He is not a "natural footy brain for all situations"
type like M Voss but he does sometimes displays a quickish brain. He strikes me
as the 2yo colt who has all the energy in the world and looks a real prospect
but needs more racing experience to knock some rough edges off and you're not
quite sure what distance will suit him best in the long term but you reckon he
moves better than most of the other colts in the paddock. His package has so
many potential goodies in it that are at least at the 80% stage that, even if he
doesn't later shine in a couple of the aspects I expect him to, he will still be
value for his other attributes. I would have drafted him myself, although he was
never going to need a pick as early as my ranking denoted. Suited to HBF where
he can give some run and linking. "Wing" should suit too. Unlikely onballer
(unless perhaps as run-with, in time). Will probably turn out to be a bargain.

Re: 26. Joe Anderson

Does anyone know if Joe is injured.
Hasn't been prominent in the training reports for a while, and not in the rehab group ASAIK.

Didn't notice him in the practice game and not selected vs Port.

Seems to have dropped off the radar for a guy who showed a bit of promise last year.

Re: 26. Joe Anderson

Watching the Bullants on the weekend. Joey looks like he has worked his body into a really good shape, looked big and fit.
Hope he can have a good pre seaon and really come out firing next year:thumbsu:

Re: 26. Joe Anderson

I can't believe how stupid some of the posters are in these forums. We have a delisting topic for 2009 and posters are writing: Joey Anderson will be delisted by the end of this year. I know for certain that he will not be delisted by the end of this year because he has signed a 2 year contract at the end of last year.
