I was all fired up to sink the boot into the OP before I read it...:D

Joel has been great this year and did a top job today too....just a champion player..:thumbsu::thumbsu:

I was reaching for the moron analogies...whew.... ( no offense to the OP)

Put them away again.....

Smithy has been an out and out star again this year..... just shows how much we missed him last year....

Most notably in our close games, he ALWAYS seems to find that extra gear, not necessarily pace wise, but in terms of possession and influencing the game.

go back and watch the 4th quarters of our close wins. You will always see him getting a clearance or something to our benefit.

Guy is like Scarlett.... total club champion hands down.....:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

I owe a huge apology to Joel.
I didn't think his body was going to come right at all.
Not only has it come right he is showing why he is so valuable. Consistent attempts to contest the footy followed by blocks let a team mate through.

Not only that he is spreading from the contest and providing another avenue.

I never doubted he would get back to his old self but one thing that has surprised me this season is his kicking. He's gone from be a relatively average kick to sensational. Two or three times a game this season he's executing a sublime pass that I previously didn't think he had in him.

I was meaning to start a thread about Joel.

To be perfectly honest, i thought his injuries had gotten the better of him and going into 2011 i'd sadly put a line through him, thinking he'd struggle to get on the park.

He's always been the consummate professional who took great pride in being in peak physical condition so i always knew he'd do all he possibly could to get back but genuinely thought his body was shot.

Full credit to Joel though because he's not only got back but he's turned back the clock and is playing some of the best football of his career and is again a vital, if under appreciated externally, cog in our midfield.

I think he is easily our best clearance player! He should be a starter at every centre bounce IMO.

Completely underrated. Having him playing great footy again this year has been one of the biggest factors in covering the loss of Ablett.

Joel's back to being happy playing football, and that stands out. He is so committed to his football and over the problems of last year. I dont think there is a player in our side that gets more down on himself when he has a bad game. He just doesnt settle for 2nd best.

Yep. Me too. If somebody organises a "Sorry" march for Corey and Ottens, I'll make a banner and walk up the front.

Corey's my favourite player outside of Hawthorn... He's an absolute gun, and has been for many years now and has been a key factor in Geelong's sustained success over these last few years. It's a shame he never received/receives the recognition he deserves from the wider footballing community, he's been so underrated for so many years now.

It's great to see him having a renaissance with his form.

Shouldn't you be studying?????

Me too. I was also wrong.

This really shows how quickly people jump on and off players. Calling players done in their first few years playing, one injury and career over, etc. If we made a list of players not worthy on this board in the last 4-5 years it would be pretty impressive me thinks:

Ling
Corey
Ottens
Hunt
Wojak
Mackie

etc etc.

one of the major reasons why Geelong failed to fire a shot in the 2 finals of 2010:thumbsu: Corey is one of the greatest midfield players. Orangutan arms:eek: the guy is ripped!

Whilst i agree with the general point, i don't think it's fair to suggest that anyone who thought Corey's injury was career threatening had 'jumped off'.

The poor bugger was crippled last year, looking like he was barely able to move at times before missing half the season.
Add in the dodgy knees and a decade of tough, hard, body jarring footy at the elite level and i don't think it was harsh if anyone believed injury might have cruelled the back end of Joel's career.

I doubt there's a poster here who didn't think Joel's career was near its end point last year due to what appeared to be a chronic knee injury.

I took this thread to be a celebration of his total time with us which has been nothing short of exceptional. Dual All-Australian. Dual Carji Greeves medallist. In the top few of the B & F most other years. Dual premiership player. International rules rep.

The way he's bounced back this year is a tribute to him and our fitness staff.

A gun!

With Selwood they are wonderful in the centre square. In big finals these two with Ottens and Bartel/Kelly make a pretty formidable centre square combination.

What a champ he is. I hope he is eventually able to kick multiple goals in a game

My god is he underrated. Great to see him playing strong, consistent footy, winning the clearances with sheer strength and ability. Absolute gun :thumbsu:
