It's fair enough to say Joel Selwood and Scott Pendlebury were pretty even during 2007, with Selwood marginally in front.

However, this year we have seen Selwood take his game to the next level and become of the best in game, where as Pendlebury has probably not dominated at all or lived up to his form of last year.

What do you put this down to?

Could be numerous things as we're not aware of all happening on the inside.

He had a patch during the year where he was running freely and playing very good footy, but has moved back a little bit.

It could be added attention, injury, numerous things.

Selwood is a super talent, lets remember the support he has around him, and how solid the unit is. The hardly ever have a passenger on the field and work for each other. This probably helps his development quite a lot.

Once again though, fantastic kid.

pendels doesnt play with ling bartel and ablett.

its a bit like how kerr isnt as good now that judd and cousins left him on his lonesome.
True, I would love too see how Selwood would go in our Midfield and Not Geelong's

I put it down to one or more of the following:-

* His KPIs are not decoupled from the Sub-prime mortgage crisis in the US
* He needs more bran
* Clearly not enough merchandise contracts
* Sitting on the fence re: mustache action (grow it or lose it)
* Needs a regular spot on the footy show

Of course there may be something about having other teammates sharing the load blah blah blah... expectation blah blah blah... pish posh.

Ablett, Bartel, Corey, and possibly Kelly would all get attention before Selwood. Only Swan may get a look in before opposition coaches tag Pendles.

If Pendles was playing for the Cats, he would be receiving the same accolades as Selwood imo, unfortunately for him he plays alongside our bunch of plodders that make up our midfield.

pendles is my favourite player by far, however selwood is a freak and would shine in any midfield. selwood will become one of the games elites within a year or 2. pendles will still be a fantastic player but not quite in the same league as selwood. i hope im very very very wrong though

They both are guns.

Selwood has had a better last month but the earlier parts of their years were very similar. People on BF and footy fans in general have memories like goldfish. Your last month is all that counts in this game apparently and it counts for everything.

It's kind of like how suddenly after one game where Ellis truly had an influence that suddenly "Ellis v Thomas" threads pop up.

Pendles is a good player, but Selwood has been an absolute champ from day 1.

The only other player I have seen make such a debut was Chris Judd who was in the votes in his first game against us in 2002 and never looked back.

Selwood is an absolutely amazing player.

Pendles is good but is not and has never been in Joel Selwood's class.

Crop around him makes a lot of a difference see Murphy 07 compared to murphy 08 for an example of that.

Pendles is getting tagged a lot more as he is our number 1 or 2 mid Selwood is still probably 3 in Geelong which is a huge effort.

Selwood's only major plus that he has in terms of playing ability is that he throws himself in and wins the ball with reckless abandon. Pendles sure win his own ball but not in the same manner. That is only a minor part of the game.

The other thing is Geelong dominate possesion of the game so much something 400 possesions as a team per game, so if your a good player in the midfield in that team you are sure to rack up the possies.

Exactly, and we play a relatively low possession game where a possession count of 25 is good numbers.

Pendles was in very good form in the middle of the season. He's struggled in recent weeks. I still think he's carrying an injury.

How annoying are posts like this?

If Geelong had taken someone else with #7, we would've had Selwood at #8 then Reid/Brown at #10.

Lol you ready for this next one?

We would've won the Premiership last year if Selwood was in OUR midfield, instead of theirs.

The whole "he's protected" argument has been blown out of the water, since ablett has been out out he's getting just as much attention as Bartel has been, and he's stepped up to cover for Ablett. not struggled with the new found attention

Like Bartel, it is very hard to stop players who get in and under. It's a great trait!

Yep, and the thing is that style of play is very natural to Joel, and hence he has just continued on his merry way, Pendles on the other hand is getting better in this regard, but was never a natural in and under player. He is improving visible through out the year and is almost an entirely different player in this regard to the one who first arrived.

They are also different players. Pendles also doesn't play around the likes of Bartel, Ablett and Ling. We need to trade for inside midfielders at the next draft. Midfielders with good disposal. And hope and pray for the development of youngsters such as Stanley, McCarthy and Barham to name a few. Why don't we make a serious play for Kerr while we are at it.

You make a valid point and I am happy to respond.

Selwood is a youngster that I would absolute love at Collingwood. And he is what every club needs but possibly more so than any other what Collingwood most desires.

He goes in and gets the ball the hard ball and than makes the right decision.

Pendles is a different sort of player. He has awesom avasive skills is incredibly composed under pressure and can bring other into the game around him.

Maybe Selwood would be good in any side and although Pendles is in the same category, he would be much better playing in a side like Geelong who has a great midfield. I think Pendles is more variouble to the midfield he plays with than Selwood.

i rate selwood but i dont rate him any higher than pendles. pendlebury showed tonight hes on the right road. threw himself into every contest and tooked some nice contested marks and never stopped trying. looked really physical tonight , not that i ever thought he wasnt .

at least it should shut up those pinheads from other clubs labelling him as soft.

what was with schwarz saying ellis is in his second or first year and pendleburys a third year player, and thats why ellis got hurt? pendlebury was taken same draft but at number 5 and ellis 2 wtf
