I recall seeing an interview with Grover last year where he spoke about a change to his training programme to work on his pace again. With Taz down back and McPharlin covering the other gorilla he was no longer expected to be the 2nd tall in the backline. He had bulked up to fill that roleover a few years but no longer needed to and was shedding a few kilos and doing a lot of work on his speed.

The ability of Faulks to step straight into the FB role is crucial imo.

If he can cover Tarrants role efficiently it will leave Grover as the third tall and gives us the luxury of using Silvagni as our swingman.

If Faulks doesn't shape up we are resigned to having Grover versus gorilla number two and this has never worked out too well in the past. Plus we lose that vital flexibilty that todays game requires.

Thankfully, everyone of my mates in Victoria really rate Faulks very highly. As do a lot of people on here who have seen him in the flesh it seems. So evrything augers well at this stage.:thumbsu:

Of course the JA possibility gives us another string to our bow if it comes off.

How many weeks before the season starts??:(

4 talls in the backline. If Faulks actually does step up I wonder how many games Grover will play? I'd also like to see Sibbo get some game time this year if his form warrants it.

2011 Grand Final Team

Mzungu Faulks Silvagni
Duffield McPharlin Ibbotson
Morabito Mundy Broughton
DeBoer Pavlich Fyfe
Mayne Anthony Ballantyne

Sandilands Crowley Barlow

Hill, Palmer, Johnson, McPhee

Hard Luck
Roger Hayden
Antoni Grover
Micheal Walters

Is whats going to happen

hahaha, if you think hill will be on the bench at the start of the 2011 grandfinal you are on crack. in fact i'm willing to say that if, and it is a massive if, we make the gf it will be in a large way because hilly has dominated all year, and that being the case he will be the first player named in the starting 18

I reckon it will be more like the following:

Ibbotson Faulks Silvagni
Duffield McPharlin Broughton
Morabito Mundy Hill
Mayne Pavlich Fyfe
DeBoer Anthony Ballantyne

Sandilands Palmer Barlow

Crowley, Johnson, McPhee, Mzungu

Johnson and Silvagni backing up Sandi

Yep, that looks like the best possible 22 to me. Likey muchos!

Benefits of starting him on the bench:
Escapes the tag
Doesnt get manhandled by the Big Bad Bully on the opposition team pre-bounce
Messes up opposition pre-planned matchups

Obviously still gets the same amount of TOG he usually would. This way he gets to run around for a good 3-4 minutes every quarter without Picken/Joesph/Ling etc trying to make love to him from behind.

i see where you are going with that, but they are going to do that no matter when he comes on... first bounce of a grand final, you want your best team on the field

NEW AFL franchise Gold Coast could extend their recruiting splurge from an historic national draft into December with a late and surprise bid for disgruntled Collingwood utility John Anthony.

McKenna and his Suns recruiting staff could take Anthony in the pre-season draft in December with the first pick of that final senior list selection process.

It is understood McKenna is considering entering the race for Anthony, who will turn 23 in January and fits the new club’s recruiting model of young players for potential long term service with Gold Coast.

His aggressive playing style, all-round talents and sure goal-kicking could also add vital scoring power and a key forward to McKenna’s initial playing list.

If & it's a big "if" imo that Anthony isn't there by our pick...what other players could we turn to?

Is Carl Petersen's head right now?

Would Tim Houlihan be avail in PSD? That would be the ultimate bitch slap to West Coast :D ...just can't believe that kid got delisted...& I know he looks like being rookie listed, but you never know...

Perhaps one of the overlooked nominees for the draft. I seem to recall Brisbane taking Rockliff with a PSD pick in his draft year.

I hope that's their reasoning, Dolphin. But still, there's five clubs fighting for three uncontracted players, we're picking last and there's nothing to stop any of the other four from picking the bloke that we want (I don't buy the theory that we're offering a contract that's too awesomely awesome for anyone else to match). It doesn't sit right with me.

No-one is saying that the contract is awesome Kev.

It is more about taking a player, even though he has complicitly expressed his desire to play elsewhere.

Especially someone like Anthony.

I really don't think GC are worried about the amount JA has nominated for his contract. Either he plays for them and they get what they want, or they wasted a very late pick, and used up some salary cap space which is chicken feed to them anyway.

Better start hoping GC are interested in someone else :D

In lieu of the draft today and picking up players that pretty much can all play in the forward line and run & have better skills than JA - I'm happy to see this out and iff GC take him then we'll just take another slider from today's draft.

After todays drafting Anthony's chances of getting some serious game time next year might have taken a hit according to our running gameplan.

My view on Jack Anthony = Cest la vie.

Hagdorn must make up these articles on the fly to get people to read his website. Just a week ago Hagdorn was one of the only ones to claim that Anthony was a certainty to go to Carlton.

If I didn't know any better, you would think Hagdorn has just made it all up with the "could be" , "understood to be" just to RAILROAD us:mad: and FREO. He must still have very sour grapes:thumbsd:... I mean to mention all the rules and regulations to bring it to the spotlight.... come on..Kim...
