John Barilaro settles defamation suit against YouTube comedian

The former NSW deputy premier has settled his defamation case against YouTuber friendlyjordies — no damages will be paid but the internet star has agreed to edit the "offensive" videos.

Mr Shanks's barrister, Matt Collins QC, today read out a statement on behalf of his client after the court heard the matter has been settled.

"Freedom of expression for political communication is important, but Mr Shanks accepts that some of the videos posted were offensive to Mr Barilaro," he said.

"Mr Shanks understands that Mr Barilaro has been hurt and apologises to him for that hurt."

Mr Shanks' solicitor, Mark Davis, said no damages had been paid to Mr Barilaro and none of the material in question had been removed from the friendlyjordies YouTube channel.

"Our client will not be paying a single cent in damages to Mr Barilaro. Not one video will be taken down," Mr Davis said.

He said there although costs had been awarded against Mr Shanks in relation to a number of previous hearings, there had been no new order as to costs.

Seems like he got bent over after the parliamentary privilege block, once that scuttled his truth defense he couldn't defend the claim and had to settle for legal costs and an apology.

This just goes to show the deprivation of politics and political discourse in this country, a sad day for all concerned.

His lawyer said no money changed hands, they paid ~$100k to have their motion heard.

A bloke that was meant to be working in the interests of the people of rural NSW, and of course as the Deputy ******* Premier, willingly pursued a hurt feelings case. “Sorry your feelings got hurt” ended his political career a month before it was read out.

Jordies has upset Flint and the ABC 'left' gal pal crew.

TBH he probably went a bit hard on Flint (criticism was warranted but it got a bit heavy at the end) but for Sales, Crabb and co they can GAGF. Blind freddy can see that they are so far up on their ivory tower earning 500k + a year they have no regard for the common person. Don't understand how any journalist/ presenter warrants that kind of money at the public broadcaster, its just madness.
